Age Nurse here

I work in aged care as a nurse in Australia, and 90% of the people in all the facilities I work in are Greek people around the age of 85 - 105 , its been this way for the last 10~ years or so, to the point where I see other Australian nurses, as well as Indian, Asian and African nurses who immigrated here, all have learned a lot of Greek.

The question is, why are Greeks such a high % of people in aged care homes in Australia? What are lifestyle/exercise/diet of these Greeks?

Considering that everybody in the home is on basically the same diet, this eliminates it as a factor.
It's also pretty likely that they all have the same level of physical activity as everybody else in the home, eliminating that as a factor.
    So that leaves genetics.

It seems as though other ethnic groups die before making it to the age where they need full time care around the clock. Its predominately Greek people here who seem to make it to 85-100+ without dying from cancers or anything, but their bodies just seem to slowly shut down as they to older and older, which ends up with them needing 24/7 medical care

You dont actually believe that 70 years of diet and lifestyle is insignificant in a calculation of someones lifespan and healthspan right?

My gran keeps falling in her nursing home, probably once a week. In your experience, is there a way we could increase her care there? Are we getting ripped off?
Oh and in terms of Greeks?
    >They are often little. Little people live long from what I have observed
    >Eat a lot of fish

Not her but how is she falling over? Does she have dementia or something?
If yes, then you can't put in place practices that would restrict her from getting out of the bed as it's depriving people of their freedom and that sort of thing. Sorry bro.
If she doesn't then it depends where she's falling over and could be as easy as new shoes if her current ones have no grip, a walking frame, exercises to improve balance......kind of running my mouth here making it sound simple when it isn't but these are broad categories to look into.

        >once a week
What time is being listed as when she falls?
Does she have dementia, balance issues or any diseases that reduce motor function.
Has her medication been changed, decreased or increased?
A lot of questions not answered here anon.

Fuarrkkkkk thank you for the effort posts anons.
We are kept in the dark, the geriatric ward communicated directly with the hospital / wrote them a letter of what her needs are.
I'll need to ask some questions and take her to GP.

Greeks and Italians, have probably the best diets in the world. They also keep really active in their retirement years.
Every old wog I've came across spend pretty much every day tending to their own garden, growing their own fruit and veg with several chooks running around.

Another thing to note is they keep close knit communities. The amount of times I've seen old Giuseppe's and Stavros' sitting in front of a hole in the wall Cafe, speaking in their own language, probably about the most mundane shit ever playing backgammon. I reckon this would do wonders for their mental health.

Sure beats old shazza and bazza's weekly intake of Jim Beam and winnie blues. Doing fuck all but watching telly or having a punt on the ponies.

Siesta might play a part, too. Greeks nap in the middle of the day after a full meal with company instead of going straight back to work from their sandwich/fast food lunch alone like Protestant cultures usually do, probably leading to less stress and less desire to snack on unhealthy slop.

Genetics OR not fucking their bodies up in the decades prior to elderly care, or both.
Those who keep answering 'just diet' are not reaching that age because you're showing signs of early dementia: sure they might have eaten in a particular way for most of their lives (a single factor in not fucking their bodies up) but it's been mentioned diet is the same for all care patients. >All these retard posts about med diet
    Fucking idiots
It's typical lazy greeks throwing their parents in to day care. Also have you considered that there's more greeks in melbourne than all of cyprus? Not to mention you're in a greek suburb or work at a nursing home owned by greeks.
But no, I'm sure it's some magical med diet of eating lamb with deep fryed shit and desserts boiled in sugar.

    1. As has been said they are small and small people tend to live longer.
    2. They are not independent spirited. Where as many Northern Europeans value their independence so if they end up in a home, they give up and die.
    3. There are proportionally more as many other groups will take care of their elderly at home. Here in the UK care homes are mainly populated by those with degenerative brain disease who need to be controlled 24/7 so they don’t set the house on fire. If the elderly still have their marbles, they are much more likely to be at home rather than in one.

You live in melbourne yeah? you know melbourne has the 2nd highest number of greeks of any city, only behind Athens. That's right, you heard that right, melbourne literally has more greeks than most greek cities. Some suburbs in melbourne are up to 70% greek people

Pic related examines five groups of very long lived peoples (note: these are subgroups, clusters of towns in a region of a country) who are not in nursing homes. One of the groups are from a Greek island.

Diet is part of it but so is community and daily activity.

    greek here
    i guess it's genetics
from my dad's side, both of his parents where smoking like chimneys
my grandma especially, she would have pneumonia at age 80 and continued to smoke, finally dying from another pneumonia at age 86
my grandpa died at 87, and recently my other grandma died at 87 as well, unfortunatelly due to altzheimer's
my other grandpa is alive and well at age 92
overall, with one exception, none of my relatives have cancers, even when they had shit lifestyles, constantly smoking, eating whatever, etc. None of them have died before 80 years old
my greatgrandma who ate fairly clean and only smoked once in a while (weed included) died at 104
i guess it's good aging genetics, as well as not giving a fuck and living care free
