Question for other aging millennials: when did you your fitness goal go from
"yeah bro I'm gonna hit two more PRs this week"
to
"Frick I hurt my low back again while recovering from my knee pain. Guess I'll just do accessories for the third week in a row"
Is it really over? Is it all downhill from here?

31 years old. This is me right now. I got a shoulder injury at the beginning of the month from I don't even know what (bench probably). I also have knee soreness from too much hiking this summer (I was training to climb Mont Blanc, which I did in August). I also have a weird pain in my left hand which I think I injured lifting some concrete slabs, and the pain hasn't gone away after almost 2 months. My recovery has been shit recently, which in part is because I've been watching porn and drinking too much.

Same age, had to stop my usual routine after having odd lower ab pains when doing squats, leg raises, and weighted chins and also randomly through the day. I worry it's a hernia developing so I'm reconsidering my workout schedule this weekend. Frick I don't wanna go back to calisthenics.

Frick bro, since I fricked up my back last august, my goals are now completely actually health related. I do shit loads of yoga and stretching, along with back traction, out of necessity. Probably never deadlift again either.

I would be more sad, but tbh it kinda ushered me into growing up. I stopped caring about being juicy and realized I wanna make a lot of money and have some prestige cause I’m getting old and want to raise kids with my wife

Idk either, zoomers, understand that aging is not a meme. You peak at like 25-26 and then begin a slow decline that takes a dramatic slope downward around 30

        >Check thyroid and testosterone.
Well, yea. I know this. It's directly linked to too much fapping and also to excessive alcohol consumption. I'm not moronic. In fact, I can literally see my facial hair growth change depending on whether I fap or not.
I know it's to do with low T. The fascinating thing is to see how much of a difference it makes: as in, if my T levels are high my body can seemingly recover from a minor injury/tear in a matter of days, but when T levels are chronically low the same injury might nag me for MONTHS. And this is a problem that has become more noticeable over the past few years.

I also know there are many anons who stubbornly refuse to believe that fapping can influence T levels, but there you have it.

      >Is it normal to feel knee pain a few hours after leg extensions?
No. That is not something I have ever experienced, and I'm nearing 42. I have come to the conclusion that, surprise, people vary a lot. For instance leg press often puts a lot of strain on my knees that even normal squats don't, regardless of how I change my foot position. You have absolutely no obligation to continue doing a movement that guarantees you pain. You can get gains without it, especially if it's something like leg extensions.

Thank you very much for answering. I'm positive you have saved me from unnecessarily grinding my knees into dust. As I said, despite consistently improving my lifts, I've been feeling DOMS less and less each workout, and I took this joint pain as the new "mandatory post exercise soreness" that signaled that my tendons and cartilage were thickening and becoming more resilient, particularly because the powerlifters around always complain (and sometimes brag) about their knee pain. I felt that something was off, and I'm grateful that you shared your experience. I'll see if I can find a good quad exercise replacement. May you be blessed with further gains.

What would your routine look like?

        Anonymous

I've never used a set program, I generally loosely do a combination of calisthenics and PPL but with a lot of variation depending on my mood.

For example today I want to do some upper body push work. I'll start with calisthenics, 3 super sets of pushups and pullups (probably around 60pushups + 35 pullups total) then I'll do 2 sets of DB bench press around 15 reps close to failure, 2 sets of DB shoulder press similar reps, and finish off with some kind of lat raise. Whole thing might take 20 mins or so.

I always start with calisthenics but on a back day I'll do romanian deadlifts and shrugs after wards, and on a leg day I like doing bodyweight VMO squats as a pre-exhaust before light high bar squats, supersetting them back to back a couple of times. I don't like doing heavy squats I only feel it in my back not my legs so I always hit the quads first with something like an extension or sissy squat, and then light knee forward barbell squats really feeling a burn in my quads.

I do train with good intensity and high RPE, just never low in the rep range, never explosively, just calm and controlled.

      Anonymous

I was born in 1990 and was overweight my whol teens and twenties, only started losing weight and getting into training 3 years ago.
Before I had an aching back regularly, cramps, my knees started making noises.
Now I feel pretty good and love the way I look, but do it mostly like . I dont chase high numbers or force anything. I try to keep progressing, but in small steps, dont want to get fat again and therefore take it easy when my strength desnt increase much during times when I keep the weight off. I walk/bike a lot and do yoga every morning, and apart from DOMS or a stiff neck here and there never have any issues, especially ones that woild keep me from doing my routine.
Could I be more muscular and stronger faster? Sure, but I lift for my health, because it's fun and because I like the way it makes me look.
Maybe it's just because I started so late so there is no wear and tear, but I feel like I don't need to rush things to finally reach 1/2/3/4, what other anons may have accomplished in half the time. I run a marathon, not a sprint.

        >I dont chase high numbers or force anything. I try to keep progressing, but in small steps,

This. Just doing some form of exercise is better than going full max and fricking your shit up in a week. The best exercise is the one you enjoy doing frequently.

People need to remember that lifting and exercise is just one component of being healthy and fit.

So close to enlightenment and yet so far. You do have to lift X and lift Y. Once you let go of the frequency and volume ego you can easily do so. Just warmup to a working set that's harder than last time and then rest until you can do it again.

Don't ask for source but I remember seeing a study not too long ago comparing intuitive training to structured training, so basically people who just train how they feel.

The results are surprisingly similar, but those who train intuitively have to have some idea of what they're doing in the first place so it's probably for people who have done structured shit in the past and know their bodies.
It was personally vindicating as I hate logging everything and just train 4/5 times a week.
      Good job bro

        Anonymous

i've only ever trained intuitively and i mog nearly everyone
i mean i have a very general structure that i follow (start with heavy compounds, then isolation machines for a pump, then maybe cables for a stretch depending on the muscle group)
but overall i'm just like "hmm well i need to hit this muscle at this angle and intensity and this particular barbell/dumbbell/machine/whatever is available so okay let's go" and it obviously works great for me
it's funny how the people who autistically track everything and follow some super strict plan end up being some of the most dyel little homosexuals lmao
lifting and bodybuilding is all about mind-muscle connection, and that includes being in tune with how your body is feeling, recovery-wise, strength-wise, etc.

          I'm

          https://i.imgur.com/pq8ji7C.jpg

          33 here.

I've been training often since high school and actually enjoy the gym and feel shit if I don't go so I'm lucky in that regard.
Where I'm fricked is having bad insomnia and it's basically unfixable so I have to take something called Seroquel to sleep. Best sleep of my life but it makes you insanely hungry and that's why I'm about 10kgs overweight.

In terms of "is it all downhill", it doesn't feel that way. I felt that way at 29 and now I realize I feel basically the same as I did at 28 and now I think a lot of guys just give up at 30 and that manifests into them looking like shit because they think it's normal to melt into goo. Look at some of the guys here that are late 30s and 40s in current body threads, they obviously said frick off to that bullshit and kept going and now most people would see those bodies and think they belong to people in their 20s.

Though I think it's 45 onwards where we will start hitting serious hurdles and at that point I'm taking pharmaceuticals.

and totally agree, also follow the same plan, big compounds then finish off with isolated. Plus I like to listen to bullshit on my phone while I train and stopping after every set to track is just a fricking chore, I train till I'm pumped up and feel worn out then go home.
I keep track of some basic shit and every now and then I'll write down my big lifts to track progress but we aren't training for the olympics here so who gives a frick. Athletes have to train like training is a job (because it is for them).

You fit in much cardio? That’s really all that I struggle to balance now, I know it’s got to be good and I feel better doing it but it’s just more time consuming and not as fun. Usually do it as a hike most weeks, plus some kind of sprints to get in more leg volume.

I’ve been through a lot of iterations of training methods, eventually settled on a similar set up. More rings based calisthenics now than I used to, and not really any “conventional” barbell lifts. The most important thing is just exercising and if it feels better and is fun without injury risk at the expense of a few % drop in efficiency that’s a good deal. I don’t regret my heavy compounds/powerlifting phase because I did it at age 23, while bone density increases seem to stop after 25 and then just get maintained.

I do train with good intensity and high RPE, just never low in the rep range, never explosively, just calm and controlled.

      >the most down to earth and good looking ISTizen is a 41 year old natty who never lifts heavy, doesn't care about numbers and has no routine

Sounds like you struggle with form if you're hurting yourself. I'm 30 and never injure myself lifting, I've been doing it for 10 years so I rarely do things incorrectly. I think the whole "your body breaks down in your 30's" myth is perpetuated by untrained unfit people who spent the past 20 or so years ruining their bodies with poor lifestyle choices. I kept active and kept the muscle working.

Honestly, i probably spend less time being injured now because my form is much better when lifting than in my 20's. Biggest struggle now is (and always has been for me in particular) eating right and keeping the body fat down. Right now most people would probably consider me to be "built-fat". Eating well was actually pretty simple in my bachelor days because I just wouldn't keep shit food in the house. Now days, my wife does most things regarding the food whether it be grocery shopping or cooking. She likes high carb shit and knows nothing about nutrition so she keeps alot of shit food in the house. Ironically, she's actually quite skinny (vidrel is pretty closer to her body to include the ass) despite eating like shit and not working out ever...anyways, with all of this in mind, i've actually had to focus on being more disciplined with food when it comes to not eating shit and also getting enough protein.

If we're being honest, health itself is a matter of birth and genes.

Diet and exercise mostly exist to preserve it into old age. Not to create it when the raw material for health is already not there in the person to begin with.

You're not going to lift and eat your way into fixing your DOWNs, or letting a blind guy see, or letting a guy born with no liver suddenly have a new liver.

I had an Arab friend I knew, very fit. He has a disease where his veins don't flow 100% directionally, so if he's not active for too long, he'll legit get woozy.

His exercise has preserved him very well, but it's not going to fix that fundamental flaw.

I probably have the genes for depression and suicide, considering my father and grandfather both had depression and one attempted it. I think exercise is okay at keeping it at bay, but it's fundamentally just a part of the soft-machine I was dealt at birth. Gotta live with it.

Also if I kill myself, I can't go to Catholic heaven. And I miss my grandma too much to pass up that 1% chance that the Trad Caths are right, and then not get to see her for eternity.

              Anonymous

People who kill themselves cannot enter heaven when they die, under Catholicism.

That'd probably be worse to me than burning in Hell forever, is just not being able to see my loved ones again. So suicide isn't an option.

                Anonymous

did you even read what i said
i didn't ask you to explain heaven or hell
i asked you to explain how you think "seeing someone for eternity" works
and for the record, i don't want you to have a nice day
i want you to live in the real world and make more White children
heaven and hell isn't what you think
it exists right here on earth, which i'll explain after i get you to think straight
so... logistically... how exactly do you think you'll "see someone for eternity"?
have you actually thought this through?
or is it something you just blindly parrot because it appeals to your feel-good emotions

you must be young and inexperienced lol
it's very obvious that you're White
Black folk/shitskins/jews don't talk like you or hold the values that you do
it's simply in your nature (our nature, White European nature)
you'll recognize these patterns the older you get

And I imagine it'd just be the idea of me and the idea of my grandmother, just vibing out for eternity as monads. Except it's outside time, so it wouldn't even really be "eternity" it'd just "be".

i hate to break it to you buddy, but that just isn't how things work
maybe there will be some place in between your life and the next one where you essentially have good dreams remembering loved ones
but, again, i don't think you've really considered what eternity means and how that would even work
                eternity = forever
as in... never... ever... ever... ever... ending
as in... not just billions of years or zillions of years... but well beyond that
so let's consider things more logically
suppose you have billions of catholics or whatever who also go on to have similar infinite dreams
there is no system in which an infinite dream loop with a loved one is possible
the unfortunate truth of what's going to happen is this
when you've left your current body, you will be born into another
maybe a dog, a Black person, Hitler, who knows
it will probably be at some arbitrary time
i believe who/what you become next is dependent on your previous life which imo is why being a good person is important
but maybe i'm wrong about that, could just be completely random, idk
there are many people/animals with lives lived who are barely sentient
it's like they go through their entire lives in a mindless dreamlike state
and then there are people like me who are super aware

30 year old reporting in. I'm breaking my PRs every year for the last five years (marathon and ultra running). Only setback was a three month hiatus due to broken foot toe and clumsy recovery, but am back at it again.

I just turned 40. To stay lean and optimize recovery I've definitely had to adjust my lifestyle. Stopped having a couple drinks after work. Diet is strict M-F. HIGH protein. Lift M W F; 3 day split is optimal as you get older. I was feeling fatigued and starting to look like shit, but now I feel and look great.

Other people seem to get injuries way more often than me - what's the one trait that these people have in common that I don't have? I'll tell you - they're all fat pieces of shit. I'm slim and light on my feet

For now, I recover just as quickly as I did when I was 20. I train sensibly, if anything doesn't feel right I stop and find something else. If I have any recurring or sustained issues, I speak to a physiotherapist.

All that said, my goal is just to stay lean and healthy. I'm happy with a decent physique and good cardio, I'm not trying to build. If I'm past my physical peak that's fine (although I don't feel like I am), ultimately my physical health is the most important thing to focus on.

    Early 30s, 1992 here.
I was benching like a moron for years and now it finally caught up with me and gave me a minor shoulder injury.
One thing I did notice is that my squat mobility has become limited and I can't go as low as I used to. This might be because I haven't squatted in a while but it sucks. I'm thinking of ditching squats and deadlifts and just do machines instead, feels like the risk of potential injury for these two at my age is greater than the benefits they have.

28 and it's already getting really hard. But the issue for me is that as well as lifting I also work in construction in a physically demanding trade and I also love skateboarding, which I do 3-4 times a week. So with all that going on it's hard to find the motivation or energy to lift and when I do I don't feel like I recover.

Fricking pussies. I'm about to turn 34, as a lifetime natty. My personal bests are 345 lb bench, 480 squat, 515 deadlift. The ONLY times I've ever hurt myself from lifting is when I got too egotistical and either overtrained, or didn't prioritize recovery. I'm also in the military so a lot of my time outside the gym is spent not sitting in my ass. I just cannot relate to people in my generation that are constantly sore or injured. Y'all need to eat a balanced diet, train smart, prioritize recovery ie sleep, stop spending so much time sitting down. You do this and I guarantee you your broken sore little b***h of a body will feel better in 3 months

As a former college athlete, I can tell my healing speed is much slower than early-mid 20s
Also my mid-late 20s was the strongest time. (Here including tendons). I’m 29 and I can say that even the quality of muscles improves by the time, the tendons do not.
Thus I’m not squatting 4 plates anymore so that I can take a walk with my grandkids in the future

Unless you got to an elite level when young and did a huge amount of work for it lifting is pretty kind to the aging anon compared to other things in life. I think many strongmen only get really good in their 30s. I saw on bodybuilding forums a guy in his 60s saying he never took lifting seriously when younger and now he's beating PRs - they probably weren't heavy but not baby weights either. It's also a myth that you have to stop lifting heavy as you get older.

  52. 1 year ago

32 yo boomer here. I used to be real hard into setting prs. I hit a 350 wilks score at 15% bf. Now i just lift to maintain my lifts and not care about prs, add in some mobility and flexibility work, while maintaining at 12% bf. Alot less injuries, still outlift anyone in a commercial gym, and staying lean.

    I can't relate mate.

I'm in the best condition of my life, I look muscular just by the fact that I've been trianing on and off for so many years so I look better than the vast majority of people my age.

It also has to do with my genetics because I look 5 to 7 years younger as well.

The only thing I'd say is that I probably reached my limit because I don't seem to be adding any more lean muscle mass.

I'm from Montreal, so I'll just use this comparison.

    Ages 16-18:
    >be me in CEGEP (Dawson college)
    >run 20 minutes every day / every other day
    >take weightlifting classes, 3x per week
    >use school gym
    >take dance and cardio, 3x per week
    >go hiking on Mt Royal for 9hours every weekend, sometimes writing my essays and homeworks mid-hike while holding the notebook and pencil in hand
    >never injured
    >never tired

    Ages 24-26:
    >McGill + bookstore job
    >lifting boxes fricks me up
    >my manager forces me to stand at work, fricks me up
    >going on a hike fricks me up
    >going to the gym fricks me up

Literally ... I think I might have a joint problem in my hip / knee ... and I'm only in my mid-late 20s.

The agepill is real - get your athleticism maxxed and your work and skills maxxed while you're still young.

Once puberty ends, and adulthood sets in, and the magic hormones are gone - recovery time goes up, and you're less able to cope with existence.

Thank god I'm not fat or diabetic like 90% of people, otherwise it wouldn't just be mild joint pain.

I now understand why the elites use the blood transfusions from young people to reverse their aging processes ... getting old sucks.

Buddy, if you're feeling this way at 26, something is off.

Get a male hormone test (I don't want to shill a specific company but just get a reputable one, it's not too expensive).

Are you getting a full 8 hours of sleep every night? Or are you staying up til 1AM scrolling?

Are you eating right? Lots of vegetables and fish? Vitamin D?

Still going to the gym and doing compound lifts & cardio regularly?

        It's genetic.

My grandmother and aunt both have a hip joint problem of leg-length asymmetry.

I probably inherited it and I don't know what to do to correct for the imbalance.

It's not a visible deformity, but inside my mind, I know it's there, and I know it's going to frick me over in my 30s-40s.

AND NO, don't just say take Krill oil - I watch Joe Rogan too, I know krill oil is good for the joints, I already take it.

I started doing BJJ almost exactly one year ago at age 34. That's when I found out I was fragile. My knees and my ribs are just shitty. Prior to that I experienced pretty much zero age related effects.

Thanks be to God, I've been able to keep training and I haven't gotten hurt in a while. I've gotten a lot better at protecting myself (keep pressure in your lungs when you're on bottom, don't let your knees get compressed to wrenched, etc). I really need to get back to lifting consistently, I'm sure it'll help.

      Anonymous

I feel that bro. I did some boxing and then a lot of judo when I was younger 14-19. Getting thrown hard and often, never got injured except a sprained ankle once.
Then at 33 I started in MMA, made sure to take it easy, was going ok until just two months into it, had striking sparring and took a hard kick to the ribs, didn’t seem bad at the time but it took 1 moth to feel ok and another 2 months to feel close too 100% so I think it might have got a cracked rib and torn intercostals. Sparring partner was experienced so I’m not sure how much was accident or what I did wrong, I definitely wasn’t guarding well though.

Any tips if you were starting BJJ over again to avoid injuries? Learn good bracing and some hip mobility? I’m going to switch to just BJJ plus lifting for a while to manage the impact/recovery more easily.

        Anonymous

        >intercostals
That's exactly what happened to me, first day rolling I in bottom position and exhaled at the wrong moment, boom strained intercostal.

Tips? I mean the biggest thing is I wish I started years earlier, I love marital arts and I hate that I spent so much time away from training (I did karate and kickboxing as a kid through highschool and college). I also regret the shit out of every single lifting session I missed in my 20's, stupid immature inconsistent bullshit. Right now that's my only goal: consistency.

Since you've got prior grappling experience you'll probably do a lot better than I did. In striking (as you probably know) you wanna be loose and relaxed and then exhale hard at the moment you throw a strike, but that's what led to my rib/intercostal injury. I've learned to keep pressure in my thorax on bottom.

For my knees, personally the heels-to-butt movement is what wrecks me. My knee first got hurt when I was in turtle position and my partner sat on me, it compressed the shit out of my knee and that's what got me. I struggle to sit in seiza posture, for example. I can squat really well, but that last few inches where your heel bone digs into your buttcheek, that's what gets me. Kneesovertoesguy has been helpful. I'm not saying he's the infallible guru, but he's definitely got some good ideas.

Sorry for the long ass rant. You definitely should do BJJ, with your prior experience you'll a mat monster.

Lost for different reasons, we had the best era of the internet tbh.

      We lost out because:

We got fricked royally economically. Gen-X got to enjoy lots of disposable income from an early age, nightclubs, partying, their own apartments etc. Then they had to ride out a small recession dip but had the best bullrun in history to fund their pensions forever.

The couple of times I bring up on this board I don't do squats and deadlifts anymore because I want to keep training for years without injuries I get ridiculed. I did squat and DL the first 3 years but I got an uneasy feeling in my lower back too often. It's not worth the long term risk, there's plenty of exercises you can do to destroy your legs without loading 140kg on your shoulders.
Hate the meme "can't hurt your back if your form is good!" Yeah sure if your anatomy allows you to squat down in a perfect 90 degree angle.

Anon, I've recently felt a twinge in my lower back during DL and would feel blessed if your posted your leg workout. I wonder how many intervertebral discs could have been spared on this board had not our egos got the better of us.

Hey mate, sorry for the late reply
        >3x10 dumbbell split squats
-> main exercise which you should try to become better at and progressive overload
        >3 sets of DB walking lunges
I pick a fairly long distance in my gym which I try to do back and forth. At this point your quads will be destroyed.
        >3 x Failure back extensions
This one hits the posterior chain and is important if you're not doing squats and DL's.
        >3x20 leg extension
        >3x20 hamstring curls
I prefer lower weight and more reps with machines, especially with leg extension to spare the knees.
        >3xFailure weighted calve raises
        >3xFailure leg raises
->Some more core work to substitute the big lifts.
Pic related, made a quick pic. Haven't done a squat in two years.
        Any critique is welcome

not that anon, but is there really a significant difference between split squats and weighted lunges? they seem like they'd do pretty much the same thing.

They do feel a bit different but it's mainly the same thing. Got any suggestions which would be a good replacement?

              >Got any suggestions which would be a good replacement?
no, i was just curious. i do split squats but avoid lunges just because i have limited space and don't wanna have to turn around every couple of reps, was wondering if maybe there was anything more to them that might make it worth sucking up.

I started to do the whole "5/3/1 heavy compound get strong look strong" thing in my mid-20's but went back to running and lifting enough to keep muscle on my frame and not look like a Kenyan. The only time I ever "tweaked my back" was warming up for low-bar squats, and I got over it just stretching and working back up from like ~150 on the bar.
I have different bodyweight goals now (strict L-sit muscle up x 5, one arm chinup) so progress is slower and I watch what I do in my gym to not get injured since I can't just eat everything in sight and hit PR's every month like I did for a while. I mainly just do U/L and work up to a "top set" in each big lift with enough reps to prevent doing too much, and rotate out lifts about every month.
Since you included some chick in your image, I will say that 100% of the poon I got in my 20's was from just being "in shape" (not fat, visible abs, twink-ish body) and running through the same crowd of scene chicks.
Oh and for the other anon my first computer had 128mb of memory and some geforce video card I bought for like $50 at best buy to play Battlefield 2 on.

No. It's not all downhill. I enlisted at 18, and spent 10 years fricking my body diving out of airplanes, getting in fights, running through the woods with shit that weighed almost as much as I did... Broke bones, tore tendons, got wrecked, had some catastrophic injuries. Got out of that and spent the next ten years doing the same kind of activities that didn't keep me healthy in the first place. I had knee problems, back problems, shoulder problems, neck problems... Finally, I figured frick it, I would just do the stuff I like instead of the stuff the Army beat into me for years and between that and YouTube videos about whatever issue I had at the time, I've been able to rehab. I've never been stronger or felt better. Turns out smarter not harder is a thing.

30 years old boomer here. Never. I'm in the best shape of my life, lifting since highschool. I don't have any pains, any aches and I am extremely physically resilient. I am perhaps the only person I know irl that doesn't have any lower back pain.
The thing is, I've ALWAYS taken precautions and always did a whole lotta warm-ups. I never go raw into the workout like I see many guys do, and after workout there's always a period of cooldown where I do stretches and active recovery.

I'm 31 and this hasn't happened yet (and probably won't). I listen to my body whenever I'm in the rack because I'm not an idiotic frick and I value my health and mobility, which is also why stretching is so important.

Haven’t gotten one injury so far and have been lifting for 5 years. I always practice warm up sets, progressive overload through 8-12 reps (I think 1 rep lifts are a key to quick injuries) and do plenty of cardio. There are plenty of bodybuilders that age into their 70s while retaining impressive physiques. Serge Nubret comes to mind, along with a few others. There seems to be a correlation between ego lifting and injuries. I could be wrong though.

I'm 36, I retired from kickboxing and I only do yoga in a infrared sauna these days. Yoga is the superior rehabilitative workout. If I get lower back pain or muscles stiffness, yoga fixes it. Nothing else works.

I'm in my early 30s and have to just laugh along and pretend I get it when my same age friends talk about how "tee hee everything hurts now."
I'm literally fine. Hell, I'm coming off the best shape of my life, this time last year I was doing about 8 hours of exercise per week (it was lockdown, there wasn't much else to do) and I was fine. At the moment it's more like 2-4 depending on the week, but that's due to motivation and the temptation to put my time and energy into other shit now that life's back to normal.

    Alan Thrall is 100% correct

"""staying off of it""" is the worst possible way to recover from an injury, you need to deload, practice reps and form, then slowly work your way back up
the difference between the lower back injury I had at 22 and the lower back injury I had at 29 is that at 29 I knew that I immediately had to work it off and build it back up, and as a result it only took a couple weeks to be back to where I was, instead of three months

    [...]

I have only ever gotten knee pain doing 3pl8+ squats, you definitely should not be getting it from a leg extension machine. Drop weight significantly until you are pain free, make sure you aren’t doing any weird hyper extension, and don’t go back up in weight for a few weeks then begin progressing again slowly imo, might just be like a tendon not completely recovering, if it hurts again see a doc. Definitely don’t keep doing shit that causes pain either way.

I'm 30 and I'm stronger than I've ever been. I just max out much less frequently. I train 5/3/1 and do a lot of submaximal work and rep work.

The only thing I can't do as I get older is max out or do heavy triples all the time, and I need to be smarter about warm-ups. But, tbh, I recover faster at 30 than I did at 22.

Just add mobility to your routine, bro. Most people get injured due to bad form/ego lifting or muscular imbalances. A proper mobility routine will help you with the imbalances. But choosing to ego lift is on you. Also, just don't hit 1 rep max PRs. You'll be hitting the same strength nervous system adaptations with rep ranges of 3-5 reps. It's not necessary to hit 1 rep maxes to make gains. You can find a decent mobility routine on the bodyweight fitness subreddit. A lot of people skimp out on mobility, and it can hurt them in the long run.
