Any alcoholics here on fit? Or ex-alcoholics? How did you manage to quit?
I know it makes you put on weight but I can't stop myself.
I drink everyday, usually when my gf has gone to sleep, I go and have a few glasses of rum, that won't get me drunk though, I have a very high tolerence, I don't have a hangover the next day, but I am a bit tired from staying up till 1-2am drinking, cause I like to do it late without being judged.
At weekends I go out to parties or bars and get really drunk.
Gf has asked me about it and I've told her I know I have a problem, but can't stop cause I have trouble sleeping otherwise. I never drink in the day.
Is it genetic? I think most of my family are alcoholics: mother, father and brother, in the same way I am, and when I'm with them it encourages me to drink more.
Any tips on how to quit? I want to quit now before it becomes a big problem, so far it hasn't really made me put on any weight but though probably because I'm young (24).
OP here.
Forgot to say, a few weeks ago I tried to quit so I stopped buying it buy, there was still some left in the house. Disgusting stuff like tequila, mescal, cheap whiskey, and stuff for mixing wienertails like curaçao, limoncello, vermouth, etc. since I stopped buying any, I just drank that, after about 2-3 weeks I'd finished it all, and was back to buying it.
Straight up it's about with will power. You have to decide which you want more, good health, happy relationship, functional life, or a buzz and hangover for the rest of your life. Drinking alone AND in secret is beginning stages of alcoholism bro, nip it in the bud now before it's too late. /rant. I'm rooting for you anon you CAN cut the shit I promise.
This is coming from a former Marine , daily drinker (2x 750ml a wk no problem) secret drinker, banned from local NFL stadium for life waking up in detox etc etc. Finally woke up one morning and said I can't do this anymore.
Thank you for your reply. Though this thread was gonna get pruned.
Do you drink at all now?
Complete teetotaler now man. I can't do one or two drinks to loosen up. Once I start it's on until the bottle is done or I'm unconscious.
This is me as well. 5 years sober now and don't regret it at all. I was a bartender for over a decade. Loved tequila. Either I don't drink at all or I drink until I pass out or go broke, no inbetween.
OP You have to decide to quit and stick with it. The first few days are the hardest. Might have to take a week off work then lock yourself in a room and tough it out. Drink lots of water and I mean lots, you'll be pissing every 20 minutes but it will help. Then have things to do to keep you occupied constantly. Whenever you start craving booze do pushups, pullups, squats etc., as many as you can. When not working out have things to stay busy and focus - instruments, tv shows, video games, books, paper for writing and drawing. You have to keep yourself so busy you don't have time to drink. Normally I would never recommend video games or TV but when kicking a habit they help in providing another source of distraction. Even if you can't do a full lockdown retreat you can stay so busy that you don't have time to drink.
Avoid bars and social gatherings for a long time. You are not capable of being around it and not drinking yet, no matter what you tell yourself. If your friends pressure you cut them off. If people drink around you just leave. You have to do this for yourself by yourself and the whole world will be fighting you on it.
Thanks for the replies, I don't think I go quite as hard as you guys did, I don't think I ever get blackout drunk, and I've never passed out for booze, but best to catch it early.
I like the idea of distracting myself with writing, drawing, video games, exercise, I think it would work quite well for me.
As for friends pressuring me, I am lucky to have friends who would never do that, in fact I have mny friends who don't drink at all, just cause they don't like it; but it make the contrast between them and myself even more stark.
I think when I get home, I'll pour it down the sink and see how it goes
good luck, stay strong. You're doing it for yourself, remember that.
If you do manage to slip up don't view that as an excuse to binge out. Start afresh.
Thank you, do you think it's a good idea to have a cheat day ? or just drink a small amount on week-ends with friends? Or should I stop it all?
Stop entirely. if you are having cheat days or 'just the weekends' you are still drinking and judging by what you have said so far you will be back to your current status in no time.
Just stop entirely. Don't think of it as quitting forever, just stopping. Don't drink. It isn't a matter of how long, just don't drink.
>This is coming from a former Marine
no such thing as a "former Marine" you fricking pog LARP
>banned from local NFL stadium
kek based.
Seriously though, you just need a wake up call. Crashing my in-law's Cayman did it for me.
Seconding 'you have to want it'. Nearly killed myself falling out of an uber, had spent the night racially harassing strangers in public after having 'just one more'. It will ruin your life in the end. Either get a grip on it and have 2 drinks 2 times a week, or stop drinking. It's not worth it on your body. It's just not.
sounds like old you was based
Well yeah but he was sleeping like shit, stopped working out because of hangovers and apathy, didn't eat well because appetite was screwed up etc. It was a worse me only because I didn't have good control over my faculties, not because I was racist. I'm still extremely racist. Just not careless enough to show it off in public.
Hi OP, I'm the same as you. I drink to "fall asleep".
Genuinely do have trouble sleeping if I'm sober so that's my excuse but I've been doing this for 5 years now. I only drink at night after 6-7pm.
Fiancee has basically given up trying to get me to sober up, we have had many fights due to it, lately I've been good at not drinking too much that I can't control myself
The only way to stop is to want to stop, and personally I don't really want to stop
>hmm I have an extreme addiction that will kill me, better ask IST for help
Seek professional help moron holy frick
I've never had alcohol
If you're hiding it you have a problem, which you have acknowledged. Do not use the reasoning that not drinking during the day makes it less of an issue. That is a rationalization and not a satisfactory one. This is a fitness board and I've seen alcoholics live at the fricking gym. 24/7 gyms where they can anytime they want a drink and workout.
Have one or two drinks go and to sleep earlier, with your girlfriend. Ask her to hold onto you as she falls asleep, either across your chest or with her hanging on as the big spoon. If you love her this will feel really cute and you won’t think as much about drinking, plus you can’t get up without disturbing her.
How to quit? Either get scared because you see it kill your friends and/or family (not a totally reliable method, because you'll possibly think that you're just "stronger than they were") or hit rock bottom (can be dangerous, sometimes rock bottom is death). You do you, I'm not going to preach, if you want to be a drunk have a great time doing it. I know there's nothing I can say that will actually make you quit if you don't want to, but you asked how to quit and those are the options.
I was a cocaine addict for 2 years and could never do blow without booze, I never missed a day when it came to the powder so I drank everyday. You can drink a lot on that shit kek got caught up selling dope and started training in the pen never looked back after I was released.
Yeah I was an alcoholic as well as other drugs. Once you've decided you want to stop you just stop. If you try but can't you don't really want to stop. It was still kind of tough but you get over it in like 1-2 months
I've been sober for alittler over 2 years now, was a heavy alcoholic. Got tired of family always getting pissed at me for always being drunk, and it always bothered me. I hated myself for always being drunk too, so I'm glad they at least cared. I unfortunately substituted alcohol for binging sweets. It's not the IST thing to do but it kept me from drinking. About 40 lbs later of all the sweets amd no more cravings, I finally stopped eating them. Was at 323 lbs, got back on track with life, did my diet and minimal excercise, I'm down to 169-175. Usually fluctuate.
I almost fell off the wagon after a couple of months into sobriety, was at the gas station I normally normally buy my vodka at, they didn't have it, so I convinced to leave without anything.
If you can substitute your cravings with something healthy, unlike me, that would be your best bet.
How much were you drinking daily anon? I’m in a very bad way: either killing a liter of vodka every 3 days or drinking like 7-8 beers a night. Weekends are sometimes worse. I haven’t had a night off since Jan 2020. You think I’d have withdrawals if I stopped on a dime ?
I was at the point that I was just about doing a 1/5th every night, sometimes less. I live with my brother and literally got to the point where I would stash my bottles away just In case he wanted to get rid of them. Every time I would visit my family or they visit me, I always had it in the back of my mind, that they were always wondering "is he drinking or drunk now?" It made me distance myself from them which also bothered me.
I had done this for a good couple of years. I ended up stopping on a dime. I've heard stories about it being bad to stop cold turkey, but I powered through thanks to those 10lb bags of reeses and kits. I don't think I ever really became jittery or the such. I literally just replaced all drinking after I got home from work with eating candy like a fatass but it ended up working for me
Thanks for sharing your story anon. Considering I'm not far off from where you were when you stopped, I feel hopeful. It's the only thing holding me back: booze. Hilarious how the social lubricant has isolated me from almost everyone.
So strange how some addictions just grab a hold of you, I'm probably an alcoholic too but I can smoke cigarettes socially and never have cravings, never found coffee that great, weed was a bit harder, if I had any I would usually smoke it constantly till I had none left but then I would have cravings for a week and be irritable .
Yeah that's how I am about weed, l will smoke blunts back to back and not even think about cigarettes, dope(which I don't do anymore at all) or booze. Wish i could have grown up somewhere it was legal because it probably would have helped me stay away from some of the dumber shit I have done.
ikr, I feel like the fact that alcohol and cigarettes are easy to get makes me less stressed about getting them and more likely to save it for the future
i just stopped one day bro. havent had a sip in 4 years.
I never drank every day but for years I've binge drank about 3 times per week, having at least 8 and up to 18 drinks Friday, Saturday, and usually Wednesday.
U haven't drank in a month now, my record in years. It's actually pretty easy to not drink; I just don't like how my life is right now and I realized that every time I drink, I'm putting off facing my actual issues. I became unable to drink in good consciousness because I know the second I open the bottle I will become unproductive and I will be running from my problems again. I plan on drinking again responsibly once I fix my life but until then it's pretty easy not to because I know the pain that running, drinking, and procrastinating has caused.
Think like this: if you stop for a month your tolerance goes down and you can get drunk for cheap again. Repeat till you stop craving
Also to be clear I'm mostly focused on the health aspect of it all, I'd like to live for a long time.
Socially I don't really have a problem, my friends and family don't mind, my gf worries about my health but thats it.
My personality barely changes when I drink, probably because I have to drink quite alot to actually feel anything, not sure why, I'm 70kg and 190cm, so quite thin.
>How did you manage to quit?
I just stopped drinking
Fricking hell, I do not understand people that feel the need to drink to excess every time they imbibe nor using alcohol as a crutch. Is it that hard to not behave like a degenerate and find a middle ground with alcohol consumption? I drink on the weekend but I allot myself a maximum of 8 beers over the 2 nights I drink, no more. Additionally, how does alcohol not disgust you after 4 or 5 drinks? I start to hate the flavor of beer after about my 4 or 5 one and want to stop drinking. How can you find alcohol palatable after 4 drinks and consuming it every day? Also, the hangover? Stop using alcohol as a coping mechanism and a means of masking your inability to confront your problems. Here's the thing, confronting your problems doesn't mean you are going to die. It will be uncomfortable and unpleasant, however, you will still be here at the end of the day. Imagine how lucky you are when you contemplate on the fact there are people in this world who have it far worse than you. Would you rather be some orphan in the Ural mountains growing up seeing horrific violence, never receiving any sort of education, and playing soccer with a decapitated head while scrounging for survival? Or, would you rather be some NORK woman who is beaten and used as a brood mare for the state? Or, how about being some child prostitute in Cambodia? I understand that some of you may have difficult mental or emotional issues to face, but you alone have to face them and overcome them. Otherwise, alcohol will destroy your life. Is that what you want? Allowing some immaterial object to hold that much sway over you and your essence as a complex, spiritual being? You are greater than this.
Getting wasted is fun? For the most part alcohol isn't actually that nice, you drink it to get fricked up and have fun.
I drink beer to try different types and unwind with a nice cold one.
I lift at home. After each set i drink a shot of scotch. After the whole session I'm tired as hell, sweaty and blackout drunk. I go to a shower, sober up a little, and then go to bed (i lift after work). Sleep like a baby, no hangover. All of this at least 3 times a week.
Disgusting. I'm sorry for whatever brought you to this state anon, I'll pray for you.
Bruh that's whack
23 here. Getting into lifting is part of what motivated me to slow down, knowing that slamming 6 beers each day was making my gains lower and ruining chances of ottermode. I also have a pretty low tolerance. I quit cold turkey for a couple weeks and got some withdrawal symptoms but it only lasted a couple days, mainly irritability. After i proved i coild do that to myself, I switched to vodka tonics for a while which is the most IST drink you can have. Then I started smoking weed instead and slowly converted to it basically, it's just the better substance and munchies helped me bulk. I still drink but I can control it very easily, same with smoking.
I just but chug it so the alcohol doesn't bypass the liver and so there's not really any downside other than ruined sleep and scratches on on myu car from bad parking
Go into rehab. Everything else is just addict cope.
Imagine being an addict but not getting help because you think you know better. LMFAO
Drank every day from age 14-26, got really out of hand around 22. Eventually the seizures, damn near brown piss, dehydration, blackouts etc. Finally just tore me apart. I ended up sober for about 6 months after a brush with death, now ive relegated drinking to specifically a 6pack of mickeys on fridays, not every Friday but thats just the only one it even crosses my mind on. Its a pretty hard road since cold turkey is a legitimate death sentence and its impossible not to see alcohol unlike hard drugs where you can just stop associating with other addicts and eventually you wont be around them anymore.
You can't sleep because you are addicted, you need to stop and after few days it gets better and you have the best nights sleep ever.
Either go to a doctor and get help or taper on your own before quitting, don't do it cold turkey since it can be dangerous to the point of death.
Haven't completely quit yet but have tapered down and get by with a few beers a night, down from a minimum of 12 a night and worse. Gotten a week of full clear and it felt good, too bad its summer, fricking hot and music, festivals and shit here 24/7 so its too much temptation atm.
Walking helps, just do anything if you need the feel to drink, you can even think of it like losing weight, don't do it all in one go, just on pound at a time and you'lle get better.
youll stop when youre finally ready to stop and sick of drinking.
2 months here, wgmi
Just do it bro.
Mental gains is important.
