I'm 5'4" and fight at the 5'8"-5'10" height class. My advice is to stay in your weight class and have a thick neck. You can't do the whole hit them more than they got you thing so hit them really hard.

Depends entirely on the skillset you have. If you know kickboxing/muay thai, then sliding teeps and leg kicks are great initiators. A tall person's biggest weapon is range so moving towards inboxing or clinch will be ideal both for nak muays or boxers.

While you do get rid of their main advantage that way, don't go into it thinking that you'll have the upper hand at ultra close range either. You've only levelled the playing field rather than reversed it.

you should avoid it if possible, reach matters more than height, so if your built like an chimp, it works fine, but if you have normal arms and legs it will be rough, tyson could compete against larger opponents because he was freakishly strong.whenever a smaller opponent wins against a larger one , its usually do to some particular feature physical or skill wise that is diproportionaly developed. if the opponents are equal in skill , the larger one will win almost every time.

so my adviceto you would be that if you dont have anyobvious advantage that makes you standout, take roids and train your skill set as much as possible, there is nothing more that you can do .

      >tyson could compete against larger opponents because he was freakishly strong

Tyson could compete against larger opponents because he had perfected the peakaboo style, and also because he kept crouching lower and lower while closing distance. Punching at a downward angle ends up having less power because you can no longer completely leverage off your back foot, which is why so many of his tall opponents struggled with his style.

Not to say he wasn't freakishly strong, his KO record speaks for itself, but it's not his strength that got him into KO range

        Anonymous

he won by knockqqout 44 of 50 wins by knockout, if he was weaker he would have lost a lot more , probably would have been mediocre, its the power and the skill that makes tyson what he is, with out either he isnt anything special. though i still believe that if he didnt have the skill , he probably still would have managed to brute his way to the upper rankings.

Tyson was litterally trained from the age of 13 by a trainer that trained Floyd Patterson who was a heavyweight champion.
Tyson w/o skill is an impossible equation. He was built to be the greatest. His raw strength was bested by Buster Gouglas.

Buster Douglas only won because his mom died two days before the fight after he promised his mom he would knock Tyson out. Without motivation like that, Douglas would've lost 100%.

That and Tyson never took him seriously and just piped hot Japanese women his whole time there without training much. He also fired his cornermen and brought in some homeboys who didn't even have ice for him. They did a Top 5 Reasons show about it on ESPN years ago. It was pretty insightful, check it out.

His opponents struggled with him because they were terrified of him, and they were mostly tomato cans that didn't train.

Punching straight forward allows you to completely leverage your back foot for power and stability. The bracing force is aligned with the punching force but in an inverted direction.

Punching downward doesn't allow you to leverage the back foot in the same way, because the back foot braces you horizontally, but a downward punch is directing energy vertically. Basically, you can't use your back heel to brace for a punch that is pushing you upwards rather than backwards.

              Anonymous

Both are good punches, but they are alternatives to the right straight, which isn’t the biggest problem here. Punching downwards dramatically neuters your jab, which is already a lower power punch to begin with.

Right hand power shots rely greatly on the jab to act as a setup. You can’t just throw overhands alone and expect to be successful.

Uppercut is the shortest range punch you can throw. The whole point of throwing jabs is to utilise your reach advantage and keep people(namely, Mike Tyson) at outboxing distance where he was the weakest. If you're in uppercut throwing range, then that means he has already penetrated to inboxing range and now you're fricked.

People here are saying stuff like "oh it doesn't matter if that mike forces opponents to weaken their jabs by encouraging a downward angle in order to strike him, they can just use overhands or uppercuts" and it really highlights how little the average person knows about boxing theory. You don't throw overhands or uppercuts to keep people at range.

                Anonymous

That is exactly why even the most basic of fighting/boxing training (with an actual sparring partner who knows their shit) can put you far ahead of the "average" person.

Okay thanks. To be fair, for me at least, if I am being hassled by anyone at a bar, regardless of their size, and I feel cornered and in danger, I will swing first every time, even if it's a sucker punch, before I let the aggressor do the same thing and possibly/likely not stop if I go down and out. Seen too many people not quit after they starch a person, and why would I trust someone who is intending me harm for no reason in the first place? Always swing first when in danger, even if it's a cheap shot. Explaining yourself to the police is better than being in a coma or suffering brain fama8 at the hands of a moron.

Not if I made an effort to walk away they followed me showing signs of aggression. I'll take that chance over letting a low IQ idiot decide when and where to strike after they make it clear they want trouble. Plus chances are they have a record of some sort involving assault, disorderly conduct, drugs, etc... Usually only losers go out in public to pick fights and cause trouble. You should always be able to move one step up the escalation ladder in a case of self defense.

there's no chance they're gonna die from getting punched in the kidney and liver. Kidney shots are gonna make them piss blood for a couple days and a good liver shot is just gonna shut their body down and put them in the fetal position. Punching someone in the head on the other hand can result in them dying if they get KO'd and hit their head on the hard floor.

What for? Sport? If you're asking about fighting somebody in a street brawl, truthfully nothing matters more than fighting experience. A trained fighter will stay on their feet 9 times out of 10 when fighting someone who has no clue. I've seen plenty of trained manlets duck and weave while lanklets throw fists that have no chance of connecting. If you've got experience dodging punches than you're already at an advantage.

If it's for sport it's a bit different, assuming you're in the same weight class and not obese (if so lose weight, you fatty). For boxing I think getting closer and minimising the lanklets reach works best, so training to be an infighter helps. Last thing you want to do is be outside of your punching range while in theirs. If it's for a different sport like wrestling/judo or something tbh I have no clue.
