Anyone else come to the conclusion that back squats are completely overrated for hypertrophy? People on the internet act as if it's impossible to make any lower body gains without them, but unless you have tiny femurs that allow you to go up and down with an upright torso position I don't think they're that good.

I squat 170kg, but I'm starting to think I could just drop them and focus on leg press and hack squats and still make the same gains.

You'll make the same quad gains, sure, but your legs have a ton of smaller overlapping muscles you wont hit doing a stable exercise, which is why squats are better.

I have never seen a person with big/proportional legs who both (1) Talks about how squats are overrated and he doesn't do them and (2) Is natty.
In principle/theory, it makes sense to me that a person should technically be able to just do all the other leg exercises out there and have good legs. But in practice I've never seen it happen without chemical assistance.

If I didn't have to squat in competition I would never squat again in my life. They blow wiener in terms of hypertrophy. Sitting on quad extension and hamstring curl machines will give you easy size gains at 1/10 the effort compared to squatting.

For the life of me I can't squat heavy without giving myself hip pain / hip bursitis. I think my legs just aren't proportionally built for it. Can I still make good gains doing front squat and leg press?

I don't get that, but when I do back squats it's like 50% low back. So now I do front squats.
Try a different foot stance if it's bad.
I've tried plates under my heels but it feels unstable. Have thought about buying squat shoes but I don't wanna pay for them and realize they're not the fix. Have also mixed up stance and tried both high and low bar. My most recent hypothesis is that I'm slightly allowing my knees to cave which is causing it
I actually have been trying to strengthen my glute medius to make sure I can keep my knees from caving in. I'm hoping that will help
Squatting and deadlifting in a wide stance caused me hip pain until I started using the hip adductor and abductor machines on leg day.

I agree. I only do low bar squats and 3x3 dl for legs (each twice a week) and I end up having so much sex it kills my gains due to excessive cardio.

Yeah, but I still do them for general lower body strength/athleticism. Don't feel obligated to do any lift you don't like. That being said if you're dyel and just give up on squats because they're hard then you should at least hit 3pl8 before you make any decisions on programming.

They're not unequivocally 'bad', but they're not ideal for most people. When you do them, you need to observe how much quad ROM they allow for - calves all the way to your hamstrings being ideal, & dump them if you're not able to do that & not able to become able to do that.
The best exercises for basically any muscle are the ones where it's most difficult roughly halfway through the ROM, & slightly easier at the bottom & top. But with a typical squat around parallel, where the femur is perpendicular to gravity, it's hardest at the bottom & gets easier through the ROM. Sorta like how using bands isn't ideal for hypertrophy because all the tension is at one end of the ROM, (though bands are probably worse). However if you're going ATG, past parallel, your femur is no longer perpendicular to gravity & it's actually less force on the quads - then you go up a few inches & it's peak force. That's where you wanna be. Many won't be able to do that on a squat. I personally can't. I do hack squats ATG, pic of my quads attached.
Might actually try this out, anything the hack squat misses? I have extra free time I'd give up for an extra exercise or two if need be
Yeah hack squats don't train your lower back so you need a different lift for that. It's nothing that some RDLs or good mornings won't sort out.

Agreed, frick em. I've been lifting for around a decade now and I went through a pretty big "fake powerlifter phase." Where I just wanted to squat, benchpress and deadlift a lot. I find if I go really crazy on squats I'm literally crippled for the entire week and the doms are in weird places like in my groin and where my glutes attach to my hamstrings. As I got older though I'm like "who gives a frick how much you squat." they feel awkward and I don't like them. So right now I literally just do sumo deadlifts and sled pushes for my legs and that's it. I don't like doing full leg days where you're fricking limping around for an entire week afterwards.
