Anyone else feel like rows are very awkward?

Anyone else feel like rows are very awkward? I'm only able to row 50kg for sets of 10 and I feel like its my arms failing first before my back. Is 50kg a lot of weight?

They are awkward, anyone who says otherwise is lying. Well, unless you already have a super strong lower back from a powerlifting background or something, if not you're better off just doing t-bar rows

This, I row 120kg but I also squat and DL over 200kg. T bar is better overall for comfort.

If you row over 100kg without deadlifting at least 300 you're doing cheat rows (which you should stop)

Barbell rows, barbell shrugs, and deadlifts are the only lifts I use straps for. Makes a big difference.

for me, it just doesn't ever feel like I'm actually activating anything. Seated cable rows seem to work much better for me

I don’t really feel my back during the movement (except lower back since I do them pretty much parallel to the floor) but the next day my upper back especially is fried, so they must be doing something. I only let myself cheat the form a little on the last 2 reps.

i have this same issue. If I use straps I can feel the activation

I love them, if you're feeling too much in your lower back you're either
    1) Not activating your lats and bracing properly
    2) Letting the weight get too far out in front of you
    3) Have a disproportionately weak lower back
Ofcourse at a certain weight your grip might struggle to keep up with your back muscles but at 50kg your far away from that being an issue.
If you want to do them you should probably pick a weight you can do 10 reps while pausing and squeezing at the top and do that for a week or two before progressing up in weight. Get the form down and get some mind muscle connection so you have a solid foundation to build upon.
I see a lot of guys just bending over and using momentum almost as if they're jerking it up causing each rep to look different.

How do I activate my lats and brace properly for bb rows? I've watched a lot of videos and I'm still struggling, likely because my lats are under developed.

    > Is 50kg a lot of weight?

You probably use too much biceps, try to actively not flex your elbows, they should be as static as possible.

Oh and I forgot, 50 kg is not a lot

50kg isn't a lot but its not light either. focus on using your back rather than biceps. do full ROM with slow eccentric, mike israetel style. you haven't earned the right to do cheat reps yet. learn how to isolate back before you try using bad form.

what do you guys think about smith machine rows?

i feel like they are good to start with before transitioning to barbell rows

Black person what makes you think you need to transition to them? Just start doing them at a light weight.

i don't understand why you nigs just don't use machines, it's way more pratical. why people love free weight this much

I bet you're small as frick.

Because free weights translate to athleticism. Seating down and moving a lever doesn't.

you're still sitting down/standing still to do them

Barbell rows and shrugs look badass and make me want to train back

Pick that shit up and get in your starting position. Then instead of thinking about pulling the bar, imagine you’re trying to elbow the ceiling.

Basically think about moving your elbows backwards and retracting your scapula rather than concentrating on your grip and pulling with your forearms/biceps.

Barbell rows are dogshit. Seriously. Stick to a cable row of some kind or do a t-bar row.

I've stopped doing barbell rows, frick that exercise. I'm only doing chest supported db rows now.

I recently swapped to chest supported rows, only difference is that it doesnt target the lower back, but rows arent a lower back exercise anyways.

Anyone who says these are awkward doesn’t do legs. It’s that simple.

Pendlay rows feel pretty good for my lats, I like them way more than doing pullups or lat pulldowns or seated rows. At 100kg for reps right now.

I tried doing em for a month or two and they weren't for me. My lower back felt fine doing them but my forearms would always give before I managed to get a good burn in my rear delts and lats. I do rear delt flies and t-bar row now and am much happier with the results.

I'm afraid 50 kg for 10 is low, but at least it isn't dyel tier
