Anyone ever did dance classes?

What kind? Is it actually a good hobby to meet girls? I am considering to join classes for ballroom because it looks fun.

I'm a Latin dance instructor, and yes it's an amazing way to meet women. Learning how to be light on your feet gives a unique sense of confidence and women go nuts for a man who knows how to dance.

Obviously. Wouldn't the answer to this question be best-served from someone with the experience? Would you take fitness and diet advice from an obese 300-lb man?

What's the height cutoff for dancing? I am only 5'10" and scared that girls there will not want to dance with me because I am too short.
Also, how do you not embarrass yourself when starting out because you might be terrible/awkward/stepping on others feet/bad leading?

Average height for men in the U.S. is 5'9"--stop calling 5'10" "short". It's not. Further, there is no height cutoff on a dance floor.

As for not embarrassing yourself, EVERYONE is going to embarrass themselves at first. It's part & parcel of learning something new. My first time on a dance floor, I showed up WAY overdressed, was 30 minutes late (missed the lesson), and the first 2 girls I danced with were VERY uncomfortable because of how suave I was pretending to be. But I still got hooked and kept coming back for more each week, and I've been doing this for 6 or 7 years now. I became an instructor last summer. And guess what? I still sometimes screw up.

Ok thanks. One last question. Where do you look when dancing with a girl? Are you supposed to always look at her face, do you look into the distance behind her? Any tips?

That's a good one. There are no hard-and-fast rules on where you SHOULD look, but I'll advise you do not insist on holding direct, intense eye contact with the woman you're dancing with. Periodic eye contact with a smile can be helpful because she's looking to you lead the dance, just don't have a staring contest. Your lead is exerted through periodic eye contact, the assertiveness of your body language, your hand signaling, and so on. It's a combination of things. Where your eyes go in between leading her should be as carefree as possible so whatever you do look at is natural.

Occasionally, you might dance with a woman who enjoys the sustained eye contact because she likes to flirt and/or y'all might have chemistry. But it's important for me to warn you that a dance floor--while it can facilitate flirting, dating, or a relationship--should not be treated as a meat market. Women can smell that coming off of you.

what do i do if i'm a sweaty boy. like i mean a real fricking greasy sweaty MFer. my whole face will literally be glistening in sweat within 5 minutes. is this common? are are they repulsed?

one more too, if i go for dance lessons will i be seen as a a guy looking for fresh pussy? i want to dance but i'm worried people are gonna think i'm just using it as an excuse for contact with women. do women usually think this?

and another, how do i pick a dance partner? do they assign you or do you just go up and ask anyone?

Sweatiness is genetic. My best friend is a 48kg woman, I am 64kg lean. We soth sweat like pigs while I've seen obese people barely sweat doing charleston. People will understand, though you should bring changes of shirts for long dances and shower before.

You won't be judged unless you're a creep who hits on everyone. Dancers do date each other, but most people social dance without any connotations because they enjoy the dance.

In most places you rotate partners. Also, generally there's more women than men so you being a single guy wanting to dance won't be a problem.

5’10 is short if you are under 25. New cutoff for tall is 6’2

Not OP but I did a ballroom dance class when I was 18. The girls always told me that I was leading "not hard enough". What did they mean by this?
Also, I struggled the most with deciding what move to make next so I got stuck in the basic steps a lot with awkward timing if I went for something more. What do you do here?

I do swing. Lots of qt3.14s in classes and socials, though age distribution varies by city. Only do dances whose music you enjoy tho: I went to swing because of Fallout music (kek) and then grew to like the rest. Don't give a shit about latin music tho, so salsa doesn't do it for me.

You need to hold a certain frame and maintain a connection that is not rigid, but allows you to transmit your weight changes and intentions in movement clearly to your partner. Maybe instructor-kun can give specific tips, but for me it's something you learn by dancing with better dancers, developing a physical intuition, and then incorporating feedback.

What are some dance types? Swing, Latin, what else?

Waltz and Discofox come to mind for Western ballroom dances that don't fall under swing or latin.

whats the best for getting loose/decent on casual night out at the dance club?

how should i analyze a potential dance studio to attend? anything i should scope out? any signals the crowd may be on the younger side

Isn't waltz pretty simple for a dance? Definitely something I want to learn though. Swing seems fun so maybe in the future.

For club dancing you probably want to learn a solo dance, like rap or shuffle or solo charleston.

As for age range, you can always take a taster course (sometimes offered before socials) and see for yourself. Or if you're in uni, chances are there's a student society for it.

Yeah don't like waltz for that reason. Oh, and I guess there's rock'n'roll too, though it's arguably a swing dance.

Can I bring kettlebells for swing dances, if I don't want to dance with a woman?

Not him but are age gaps bad? What if some young 23 years old joins a class with 40 years olds?

If you just wanna dance age gap's not really a problem, though for me meeting some people my age would always be welcome. It is one of the points of socialisation I have, after all.

Leading "not hard enough" means your body language was not assertive or borderline-rigid enough. YOU are the leader on the dance floor, so if your body language is floppy and indecisive, that's going to play through in your hand motions, your ability to maintain a point of contact with your follow (the woman), and overall confidence the woman NEEDS so she knows where you want her to go/what you want her to do without you telling or without her having to ask. I always tell the leads when I teach "Assertive, but graceful. Be a strong lead, just don't churn butter with your follow"

what do i do if i'm a sweaty boy. like i mean a real fricking greasy sweaty MFer. my whole face will literally be glistening in sweat within 5 minutes. is this common? are are they repulsed?

If you're dripping with sweat within minutes, try wearing something more breathable, for starters. Don't overdress on a dance floor like I did that first time. If sweat continues being a problem after that, try using a conservative amount of gold bond powder on your hands, maybe a dab on your forehead. I have no idea if yours is a medical abnormality or what, so mitigate the smaller possible causes first.

As for how you are perceived, stop worrying so damn much about that. If you're genuinely there to learn how to dance and NOT to get some ass, that will automatically come through in your outward constitution, body language, etc. The men who are there for ass are usually the first ones weeded out anyway. Like I said, women can smell that a mile away.

Oh, and you're not assigned a dance partner. You have to ask women to dance. But that works out in your favor because women outnumber men more often than not, so a woman declining your request to dance is water off your back. You just smile, say okay, and ask the next one.

Great way to meet qt and learn about confidence and how to deal with rejections

My man. I've found dance courses to be the best way to meet women. Get into salsa or bachata, or both, then go to latin clubs in the weekends. Even if you don't score anything, you get to socialmax, confidencemax (because at these dances, the man leads; even if you don't know how, you will learn by practicing), and it's a genuinely interesting hobby to share (unlike lifting which you do only for yourself). Got me out of depression too, when lifting failed
