I few milfs flirted with me when I was 16 working there, but I was too scared of girls to do anything about it.

99% of your encounters will be people angry an item is not stocked, got moved to a different location, or had its price changed.

My gf used to work as a stalker. The store managers were usually wound up and had no patience and one creepy incel tried to be there at the same time she was and when she rejected his advances he started going off on how dating is impossible and bs and self improvement does nothing. Probably posts on IST

My year working as a cashier at home depot is easily the darkest period of my life. If I were you OP I would find a job where you are active and learning useful skills.

Menial jobs are sometimes the best for building soft skills and just in general a better work ethic. Especially at a young age. I still look back at my 5 years spent working as a cashier/bagger in a grocery store throughout high school as the best thing I ever did for my social skills. I work in tech sales now and learned to hold conversation with all types of different personalities from my cashier job and it undoubtedly shaped my career path

Any advice how to max out social skills at a grocery store?

Just work. Conversations will come organically… especially with old people. The old church crowd that comes in Sunday after service loves to talk your face off. A lot of old people don’t have anyone in their life and you quickly realize that them engaging in brief conversation with the grocery store cashier (you) unironically makes their day. You learn a lot about human behavior standing in one spot people watching all day. It’s overall a really tedious job and sucks a lot of the time but the people here saying it’s a worthless job just don’t understand how to make the most of the little things.

Talk to everyone. That's it. Try making people feel good, brighten their day, make them laugh. Old people, young people, cool people, weird people, when you can talk to them all you goo

It's only part-time. I am actually in university for engineering.
I have no idea what to expect though. It's a really small grocery store with maybe 5 employees working there at the same time max.

not the anon you're replying to, part time will save you a headache, best luck balancing school and work.
customers are dependent on area and type of grocery store, there are no shortage of young yuppie girls at whole foods but i stock the shelves overnight so i'm not around them.
although i've been enjoying the podcasts and music, and zero supervision, i've been doing myself a huge disservice not-honing my social skills and fricking up my sleep cycles. i have not been around women this whole year and i can't read the girl on the closing shift. you'll grow thick skin working the front end.
with that said, your coworkers are only attractive because they're your immediate selection, in any other case they wouldn't be. that's not an issue since you have university to pick from.

          >your coworkers are only attractive because they're your immediate selection
At the grocery store I will be working are only middle aged people and it's a really small one too.
However, there are a lot of young female costumers since the store is around a University. Not that that would benefit me in any way sadly (well, at least I get to see cute girls all day).

it's mind numbing work. it's more likely for female coworkers to flirt with you than customers

There are a lot of non-skilled jobs that aren’t at grocery stores that you could work instead of working at a grocery store.

Any customer service type job is a nightmare because the normal people will just mind their business and you will barely notice them but what you will notice is how many entitled, bratty, angry fricking losers there are in society who are mad at everything. As someone else said, maybe the price on an item goes up, they will ask you why, and you won't have the answer because you're just a wagie scanning the barcodes, they will think you're useless and unhelpful for not providing an answer, assuming of course they don't chew you out and belittle you in front of everyone for being unhelpful. Maybe they're mad only 2 tills are open, "YOU HAVE 10 TILLS, WHY ARE ONLY 2 OPEN!? WHY DID I HAVE TO WAIT IN THIS LINE!?!?!" they will vent their frustrations out on you, they will blame you, because you are the face of the company, even though you're just a pawn. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN I HAVE TO PAY FOR BAGS?!?!! THEY USED TO BE FREE" "WELL I DONT WANT THIS ITEM ANYMORE IF ITS $.50 MORE THAN BEFORE" "WHEN WILL YOUR SHELVES BE STOCKED THE LAST 2 TIMES IVE BEEN HERE THEYVE BEEN OUT OF CEREAL"
You better have thick skin OP or will wear down on you over time.

Why are these people like the way they are? Have they been spoiled their entire life and never had to work in customer service before?

        Yes

It's not even spoiled people. It's just lack of character. Lack of socialization, lack of understanding what a work e vironment is like, lack kindness, lack positive role models in their lives

The worst is old women that never had to work outside their household. They're probably a rare kind of customer these days for you zoomers, but holy shit those women were entitled back when I was a kid. Hell my own grandmother, bless her, is so out of touch with the reality of living in the real world that it's almost comical.

      This
Worked at 2 Walmart’s, a local grocery, and 2 cellphone stores. Every day you will have several people who took way too much Xanax rambling on about how you can’t treat them like this as they make impossible demands and seem to think you personally own the store and set the prices/policy.
I didn’t used to think so many people were mentally ill but now my default assumption is that everyone I meet is horribly deranged and stupid given the right scenario to act out.
Wait what did this have to do with fitness?

I honestly think this is why I'm so autistic and shy, I should have gotten a job at mcdonald's or something that required me to coordinate and talk with people around my age

Recently started working at one myself OP, as a side gig while I build up my business. Enjoying it so far, the management seem good and the staff I work with are friendly.

If you go in with the right attitude you might enjoy it, at least for a while. It is interesting to see how things work in any business, and it will build up your social skills. Consider yourself lucky you are starting after Christmas, things will be much quieter in January so there will be less pressure on you to learn so fast.

    To answer your questions:

1: Yes it did affect my health, I caught a cold after the first few days there and had to take two weeks off lifting, just started again today.

2: No flirting that I know of, but I'm kind of oblivious to that kind of stuff tbh, me being an autistic tard. I think like one anon said, your co-workers are more likely to flirt.

GL OP, don't overthink it, it's just a job. Do your best and if you frick up, who cares? Everyone makes mistakes when they start out.

You will be exposed to every flu virus that goes around as there are lots of people in and out of the store every day so there is that
