I ended up browsing here more. Nowadays I find video games more enjoyable than I did before quitting. They beat doomscrolling by a wide margin.

Anyone here managed to quit videogames completely?
How did you do it and how did your life change?

Yeah same for me but the big difference in my case is that I am much more motivated to do shit that I'm better of doing. Like cleaning, meal prepping, fixing shit in my house, end up going out more and talking more to my friends also reading more.
I'm just a better person when I'm not tempted to using most of my free time gaming. I recently relapsed for a weekend and I fully realized and accepted that I love my life more when I can't play video games.
I'm not fully off. But I've disarmed my pc, installed lubuntu in my laptop and that works for me for a good while until I get bored some weekend and put together my pc again. I fricking hate it.

I never understood that sentiment, maybe because I'm not a complete zoomer, but I exclusevely play games for fun, even the competitive ones, have reached high ranks in every game I played but always having fun while doing so, mind you, silecing text and voice chat was obligatory becuase how much people seethe while playing videogames.

this. same for me, anon. its strange, I turned 18 and suddenly video games became less and less part of my life. I never thought that would happen neither since video games were such a huge part of who I was. its all I ever wanted to do when I wasn't in school, and even in school its all we talked about amongst my friend group.

im 23 now, and the last game I played and beat was the last of us 2 back in 2020. fun game, but story was kinda poop. and now they're making a show and my gf loves it. I can't stand it, for obvious reasons. but anyways, im not sure what it is, but games nowadays just feel like a chore to play and I dont have the patience for it anymore. even games I used to enjoy, aren't as fun as I remember them being. it sucks too cause I wish I could have that same enjoyment like I used too, but I guess that's just a part of getting older. sorry for the blog, but just felt like writing a little about the subject.

Same bros. After becoming a father, realizing I’d have to provide for my child and make sure they’re well off in the future, I had to cut it out. It was that or lifting to fit in my schedule. I chose the latter.

Don’t get me wrong there are days where I wanna be a piece of shit, forget about my responsibilities, get high and vidya; but atm I can’t afford such luxury. Shits only gonna get worse in the future, gotta prepare my child as best as I can.

I wouldn't say "completely." They're still there and when I'm sick, I'll play something. But overall, my gaming time is down significantly. What did it for me was moving somewhere that had enjoyable outdoors. I was in NY, now in CO. Beyond the outdoor activities, I started dancing too. I simply don't have time for games now. I'm too busy enjoying nature or dancing with some really beautiful women. I could give up some of that or some gym time for games but why would I want to do that?

      Anonymous

Based dance bro what styles do you dance and how do you recommend someone get started with this?

        Anonymous

It started with country for me. Met some people at a concert, they invited me to a dance bar, saw people dancing and jumped into the deep end (after about a month of being a wallflower). Started just going down the line, asking every girl "Hey, I'm new at dancing, can I borrow you for a song or two?" A lot of rejection but that's okay, enough say yes. It's also kinda funny to see the look on a thot's face when you ask her friend to dance while the first one is still in the middle of rejecting you. Anyway, after a week or two of struggling to Two-step, someone suggested lessons. I went to check them out, turns out they were for country swing, not two-step. I don't know the difference at this point but that also doesn't matter. Keep going to the swing lessons, once a week becomes 2, becomes 3, 4, 5 nights a week. I've also recently gotten into West Coast Swing, and plan on getting into latin dancing soon too. In short, just go out to a dance hall/bar, ask girls to dance, ask for advice, check out lessons, but above all, just have fun with it.

I did. I realized no one cares and it doesn’t do anything to improve myself. I now spend that time reading books, hunting, fishing, going to the gym, cooking, and socializing. Video games are for children if people tell me they play them I assume they’re a normie or are an incel. I try to surround myself with people that are like minded and won’t bring me down and most people I know that okay video games are nerds, dweeebs, kids.

100)/year video games. You kill 2 deer and 5 rabbits hunting. That’s about 60lbs of meat, catch your own fish, depending on how much you go there’s another 100lbs of meat. Start a garden. Now you have cut your grocery bill down 1-2000$ a year. Change your own oil. 300$ a year saved. Take time to clip coupons. Another 200$ a year saved if not more. Turn all the lights off in your house all the time. Buy clothes from Salvation Army. Until you are 100% living off the land and ripped as frick and retired those small things add up. This is what I do, and why I’m 33 and the only debt to my name is my 1 mortgage which I bought for 240,000 and now owe 160,000 and I own 2 homes we have a cottage on a hunting property. You will never convince me not to save money

When I was a vidya addict, I worked part time and lived with my parents so I could easily play 6-8 hours of vidya a day.
When I got the full time job, I made enough money to move out with a roommate and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
My parents are very enabling, they would want me to live with them forever if I wanted to so they made my situation very comfortable.
I knew I would continue my mediocrity if I kept living with them so I moved out and pretty much quit vidya cold turkey.

Being friendless/familyless after 30... well the novelty is wearing off. Uninstalled most of the shit on my PC last week trying to quit. Trying to force myself to think of a solution.

i found some table top groups, and mtg, but thats about it. I like drawing, but the meetup group is just boomers, or people that use hateful language that scares girls away.

      >Anyone here managed to quit videogames completely?
not completely, but i completely eliminated competitive online games out of my life, 15-20yo dota absolutely ruled my life. i have more fun things to do but i like to play kenshi or CDDA before sleep to relax

I still like League from time to time. getting inted in most games really made me realize how not worth it is.

i play a lot less. games are just huge time sinks and its a fake reality. they usually have boring mechanics that get repetitive and are some kind of loop of doing the same thing over and over. now I just play strategy MP games for an hour or two a day and sometimes video games on the weekend with acquaintances to socialize.

The amount of gaming I do really ebbs and flows. When I'm busy, I'll barely play anything (except maybe some DRG like once a week with my brother). Then sometimes there'll be a weekend where I'm really tired and don't have anything going on, and I'll game most of the day (taking breaks for lifting and meal prep). But those weekends seem to be less and less common.

yeah I quit a couple year back and it made my life better because I replaced it with more productive things. Also I had gotten to the point where I was just gaming for the sake of gaming. Probably addicted. I wasn't actually enjoying it in the slightest. I probably also just grew up and matured a bit and had other priorities. If you genuinely enjoy it and can limit how long you spend playing and balance it with other productive hobbies then there's nothing particularly wrong with it.

My fiancee asked me to. We both wanted to work on ourselves so we gave each other things to give up/quit that we thought were negatively affecting each others' lives. She gave up TikTok/video apps and I gave up gaming.

    >how did your life change
Way more time to do other things. I used to tell myself that if I wasn't gaming, I'd just be wasting time in a different way, but the truth is, I'm actually doing more of the things that I want to be doing. Reading books, studying new languages, spending more time with people, etc. Days feel longer and my time feels like it's better spent. In hindsight, most gaming is sort of like the junk food equivalent of entertainment. It's cheap and filling, but it's bad for you in the long run. It's better to find your entertainment other ways irl, which honestly feel way more fulfilling and memorable.

you just have to quit online game. It make you compete on a trivial set of rule (a game) with nothing gained. I stopped playing video-game because I had more important hobby/work to do. Video games are useless accomplishments. They’re basically like getting a high points for upvotes on Reddit. They have no monetary value. In fact you’re actually losing money with subscriptions and buying games. Additionally they give you satisfaction you should and could be getting elsewhere like reading books, watching documentaries, listening to podcasts, DIY a house, work a 2nd job, hit the gym, go outside, burn calories in some way, or of course social life. I gave up video games and haven’t looked back. I’m happy I’m learning new skills and knowledge stand saving money. I don’t know anyone who is jacked or has a 8/10 or > GF/wife who plays video games. They’re just kind of for kids and Black folk. I think the last game I played was MW3. Then everyone got all into nerd and video game culture and now literal Black folk have gaming rigs. I’ll be damned if I do the same time wasting activity redditors and nigs do. Personally I got really into hunting and fishing. Free food and I learned to process my own meat and bought a smoker

Anon, in the cosmically grand scheme of things, everything is useless. At some point, all energy is going to be vibrating at the same speed and be equidistant from eachother, effectively making the heat-death of the universe happen.

The only thing that matters is how you engage your mind in this present moment. If playing a game maxes out your mind, then do that. If you put make up on and have wlaks on the beach, do that. In a hundred years it won't have mattered anyway because you'll be dead.

There are a lot of fallacies in your argument. First of all, video games, just like any other hobby, can be cheap or expensive and it all depends on you. I know plenty of people, myself included, who spend little to no money on video games and it is still fun for them. Second of all, what a person "should" be doing has little to do with that laundry list you sniped from some homosexual's dating profile and everything to do with activities that are not only relevant to the individual, their circumstances and interests, but more importantly it is the manner in which an individual carries out said activities and the impact that has on their life and the lives of those around them. If something is able to inspire and motivate an individual to do right, to do good and to improve and especially if that something generates positive consequences in their life and others, then you're a huge homosexual for looking down on it. The lives we live are so fluid, they are constantly changing. That old saying from Heraclitus rings so true even today. "No man steps into the same river twice." Some of us are in a position where vidya yields good fruits and some of us are not, but the butthole that throws negativity on an activity or topic he doesn't understand is a fool. Know this, anon, what goes around comes around. If you mindlessly criticize another man's treasure, the joke is on you; it will be your treasures that are condemned and you will not be able to see what is truly important even if it were staring you in the face.

Sometimes I really want to play, but then when I get down to it I feel really really stupid for some reason. Like it feels absolutely pointless and I just get bored pretty fast. I don't know how to feel about it. Sometimes I feel like I should do something to "switch myself off" completely to relax or something, and games used to be perfect for this.

If you get to the point where vidya make your life worse, the issues are rooted deeper.
In that case cutting them off is probably a good idea, but do so understanding that you shouldn't just replace one vice with another. Do something constructive with your life and fix your issues, then you can go back to videogames without using them as a crutch/coping mechanism.

If you have really nothing better to do I don't see what the big deal is.
I feel a deep regret though because I wasted so much time playing games when I could have been focusing on art.

I simply don't have the time anymore, between university, a girlfriend and social life, and running various societies I'm too busy.
I find my downtime occupied by watching YouTube or (preferably) reading.
Picking up a more manual hobby once I've got the space and money would be great, but not quite yet.

I'd like to download Attila Total War for a couple of days next month, but otherwise I don't miss them at all and if I do ever end up playing them I often find it unenjoyable so just stop again anyway.

I liked video games in the 80s and 90s. I'm old. I like you turn it on, you're in the action immediately. The last game I bought - I think it took an hour of play just to get to use the fricking weapon. If I want a story I'll watch a movie. So basically I read or watch hockey or exercise more if I have the time. I do have some retro games I'll play on very rare occasions.

I wrote a blog post but then thought that was frickin' gay so I shortened it to this - I used to play a shitload, then I got a life and my family is way more important. I was never addicted though so it was easy for me. For others, you need to replace your habit with some other habit. Fill your schedule up so much with more important real world shit that you literally don't have time to play. Most of you probably can't do this in moderation, you're like alcoholics, so abstaining completely is probably your only hope. Sorry you lost a fun hobby but there is much more to life than sitting in a chair clicking on a screen.

I play VR combat games for a mix of fun and cardio. I also watch clips of games, mainly 4k clips of combat and fighting to get me in the mood to get up and move around.

One of my more autistic hobbies is that I make short clips of good 'exchanges' in fights in video games. Made a few short clips of combat from the Batman Arkham games, for example. sounds moronic, but short bursts of action like that get me in the mood to work out.

that being said, the passive shit of 'I'm bored, I guess I'll scroll through/play some shit' wasn't great for me. Makes the whole day slow and sluggish.

There are a few that I rotate through, and sometimes (mostly Saturdays) on my 'off' day I won't do my normal workouts and just do VR shit

Tales of Glory (Swordplay, weapons-based combat with multiple opponents - it's designed to be more of a warfare simulator, but you can just avoid having friendly NPCs and just take on enemy NPCs all day for a good workout)

Creed: Rise to Glory (Boxing - Decent game and AI, but regular game has a bullshit stamina mechanic where your fighter can run out of stamina before you do in real life. stupid as hell, so if you want to play this, get a mod at nexusmods to jack up your in-game stamina to where it's not much of an issue. then you can get a full workout. also has drill training with hitting pads, sway bag, heavy bag, etc. that are pretty decent.)

Dragon Fist: VR Kung Fu (Hand-to-hand fighting - all hand-to-hand, with some gimmick 'special moves'. there are settings and in-game cheats to reduce knockback, turn off special moves, give infinite health to yourself, etc. to make it as cardio-intensive as possible and more realistic. also a fun mechanic to take on 2 or 3 enemies at a time, which can get pretty intense. all hand-to-hand with a kick button unless you get full-body tracking, which I have not)

The Thrill of the Fight (boxing - pretty realistic boxing game. i recommend you give yourself infinite health so that you don't get knocked out and have to end a cardio session. you can use in-game multipliers to change the 'power' of your punches to change how easy it is to knockout an opponent. also has 'training' modes like punching bag, speed bag, etc., but they're not very good. probably most realistic boxing AI in VR, though)

Blade & Sorcery (weapons combat - heavily advise lots of mods (nexusmods) to make it fun. more weapons, NPC wave settings, maps, spells, etc. by far the most fun I've been able to make cardio. takes a bit to figure out which mods are best for you, but unparalleled once you get a good setup)

Any video game is not that much more than a slot machine. pull the lever, push a button get some stimulus ding ding ding flashy light. Its just that, thats your hobby.
A grown adult that works, has a social life and healthy habits can only get a limited amount of free time, to spend it in something like that is moronic and wasteful. At least I can check this page while I do something else and its still a better stimulus than gaming or looking at fake projections of someone's life on social media. I can write, draw, study, work out and still jump in here for a few minutes at a time. As time wasters go, participating in discussions about self improvement is far better than playing video games. So the argument about wasting time here is not that good because its not an equivalent to gaming.

I haven't played a video game in over three years after logging around 7000 hours on various FPS games in the years leading up to that point. The biggest change I noticed is that I see right through video games now - they're created to simulate the progression you should be achieving in real life. Whenever you're "grinding" for something in game, you should reflect on how your time and energy is being managed by a reward system where the currency is pixelated.

it is telling that the biggest video game franchise ever is call of duty. it's literally just simulated tribal warfare.

men come home from work, take their shoes off, relax on the couch, and simulate combat to the death.

very telling. i think most people don't really think about what it means, but the free market has proved this is a very consistent desire of men.

I do PC game with some friends from back home but they've already noticed I'm on discord less and less frequently. I still haven't finished Elden Ring and the last time I played was 4 weeks ago.

I stopped playing things like WoW and overwatch as much as I did and started playing old favorites that tend to just be single player RPGs or whatever. I'm a lot happier about it as I think the social aspect of competitive multiplayer games is a large factor as to why you feel miserable because theyre all the same degen fricks who speak the exact same way. I don't think you have to quit entirely if you enjoy them either. Nothing wrong with relaxing or blowing off some steam but if you start feeling like you're absolutely wasting your time and they start to take prio over other more important things in your life then it's probably time to scale back and re-evaluate.

Sold my pc about a year ago? Maybe a year and a half. I was addicted when I sold it, it wasn’t gradual it was a dramatic action, one of the best decisions ever. There are zero benefits to gaming, inb4 social hour, get real. Only videogames I play now is Nintendo smash bros with other ppl on a console that’s not mine. I highly recommend stopping, massive dopamine waisted too.

      >There are zero benefits to gaming
      Wrong.
      https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/video-games-could-improve-your-decision-making-skills
      >It’s not just decision making. Video games build a number of soft skills that are useful in business, researchers have found over the years.

      >For instance, a study published in the American Journal of Play in 2014 found that the fast-pace of many video games requires people to keep track of many items at once and make split-second decisions, positively affecting perception, attention, memory and decision-making, which many psychologists consider the core building blocks of intelligence.

      >And four years earlier, The University of Rochester found that playing action-oriented games gives players better vision, better attention and better cognition. Those improvements help with activities like multitasking, navigating around town and reading small print.

      >Different game types build other sorts of skills. Puzzle games teach problem-solving. Real-time action games improve fine motor skills, memory, response time and the aforementioned hand-eye coordination. Strategy games encourage players to make plans, manage resources and balance competing objectives.

I still game a couple of hours a day on average. I don't play action/FPS-based games anymore, though. I play games like Civ 6, Cities:Skylines and sim-racing these days. More relaxing and doing things like city building feels more fun and rewarding these days than playing 3-4 games of CSGO. I use my VR headset for racing and it's pretty fricking fun. I consider it gaming still albeit more of a simulator than a game.

Most modern games are dogshit, anyhow. I look at games like Apex and Fortnite and wonder how in the frick they're this popular. Everything is filled to the brim with micro-transactions, as well.

I used to be addicted to MMOs. Runescape got a grasp on me early back in 04' when I was 9. I quit that shit last year and have been better off for it.
