It's just a rough guide. You aren't shifting gears or anything.

They work very well for me. I've always had "gears" when walking which I consciously "shift" when doing overtakes etc. The gears "engange" on the heel strike so it's quite continent when taking corners because you can stagger the inner leg downshift and get a very smooth pivot action when done right. If you time your weight transfer as you exit the turn you can get quite a nice "boost".

This sounds like autism where you pretend you have anime powers. But if it works for you, that's cool.

Unfair comparison since it really doesn't confer any superpower or anything. I'm also not really pretending since I am a much better ambulator than 99% of the general population but it's still just walking. Any racewalker or long distance athlete would walk right over me (pun intended). I'm an "enthusiastic amateur".

You aren't doing it right. Heel striking is like driving a rusted out automatic with a failing transmission. You shift like a sloppy blowjob from a back alley heroin junkie.

Yeah I would like to see you take the turn down from the walkway stairs I take daily at rush hour. You have people coming both from the crossing and up from the subway underpass heading for the train station. You go from concrete to paving stones to asphalt with 5-6 strides with a ledge towards the street. In the winter you have meltoff from the subway vents which refreeze on the stairs causing congestion and wildly unpredictable walking speeds. You would last 3 strides in that cauldron.

Doesn't the definition of walking use language to the effect of "step must land on heel" or some such? You can get disqualified in competitive walking if you don't heel strike.

Are the cardio zones a meme?

It was proven most professional athletes spend anywhere from 60-90% of their year in zone 2 cardio. Because it's sustainable and the benefits rise to zones higher than it.
      example
      >run in zone 2
      >cardiovascular system gets stronger
      >benefits of stronger cardiovascular system apply to higher zones
You only need to do higher zones the closer you get to the actual performance activity and that's simply for temporary conditioning.

This logic is taken by most olympian athletes and stated openly by Tadej Pogačar.
If you train every day in zone 3 or higher, the likelihood of you damaging yourself grows exponentially and the benefits to the cardiovascular system barely improve.

Are you going to listen to IST or are you going to take the knowledge of the literal top tier athletes of the world.

beginners don't have the base built yet to run in zone 2; running is supposed to feel hard at the start and get easier as you get better

          Anonymous

If you are that much of a beginner even a light jog will put you into zone three for ten minutes of continuous activity.
Simply keep jogging like that every day and you'll eventually drop it down to zone 2 cardio.

            Won't I get a heart attack?

              Anonymous

This is how you slowly prevent a heart attack.
Your body has to be conditioned for endurance exercise.

We start with standing, we begin walking.
Eventually I will have you walk about five miles a day for a few months, so your body can withstand the variables needed for your heart to function normally.
Eventually I'd get you to even do some light jogging or footwork.

Honestly I don't give a shit how fast you run, Distance is a greater indicator of physical health than any other factor.
If you cannot walk 50 miles in one day without stopping, your cardio game is utter shit and you're going to die early in life from heart failure.

That's all you need dude, once a year just go for a full day walk on a cool fall day and just keep walking, walk until you're so utterly exhausted you can't walk anymore and count the miles you put in.
If you can do at-least fifty miles you have the heart condition and metabolic rate to maintain good health into old age.
If not you're going to die early and that's a promise.

There's no way you're in zone 2 standing. Those numbers are just general numbers and varied from person to person. Like on all my apps it has ~170 at zone 4 yest I can keep that consistently for an hour and a half so there's no way that's zone 4 probably zone 3

          Results don't lie dude.
It isn't even him, look at any sprinter or HIIT homosexual.
They spend the majority of their time in zone 2 when you measure their heart rate from start to finish during any exercise.
Sure if you're doing 60/120 sprints you're going to spike up to zone 4-5, but it drops to less than zone 2 during the rest phase and for twice as long.
So over an hour of doing 60/120s you're going to be on average in zone 2 or zone 3 at most.

You show me your world record holding training program and i'll listen.

Who wouldn't I lose weight when doing zone 3 cardio or above?

It's a guide. People who are mainly concerned with weight loss are generally not capable of more intense cardio and risk injury.

The thinking is the higher zones burn through stored sugar and the lower zones through stored fat. Aerobic vs anaerobic.

        Anonymous

Is that true though? Because I've seen others suggesting that HIIT is optimal for fat loss

You lose weight by eating less. Cardio is for overall health.
I always lol when i see some fatty trying to run to lose weight, and you just know he will go back home afterwards and drink 1L of coke and eat a bag of chips.

          Anonymous

Kind of. Lots of slow cardio will improve your health and you can actually get through more volume than with HIIT. It also has a lower chance of injury and easier recovery.

There's no magic switch point that changes fuel sources, but you do have a physical limit built in with your lactate threshold and mitochondrial density/efficiency.

What the other anon said is correct, diet is a big factor. You won't out run a bad diet. I've used HIIT to lose weight quickly in the past, but it will wear you down and my diet was very good.

It doesn't switch from 100% carb to 100% fat at an arbitrary number. At a certain point one takes over as the primary source, but you can't seriously believe your body is a black/white system, can you?

zone 2 training is a gay fitness fad right now, it's not useful for beginner runners who are much better off just following a c25k plan and actually trying to push themselves within reason so they don't get injured. Zone 2 trooning is more for actual advanced athletes who need to get a lot of weekly miles in and it's just safer to condition themselves at a low pace simply for the reduced injury risk. If you're confident you can run with good form and won't get injured, you're much better off and will see gains faster if you just do shorter threshold runs

staying in zone 2 is way too slow for a beginner rooner though
hell running at a slow pace for most untrained people is already pushing them straight into zone 3 at least, and you're better off just running 20 minutes at a decent pace instead of being some slow fat homosexual moving barely faster than walking speed for a half hour to go 2 miles
