super duper comfy. most comfortable shoes I've ever owned are a pair of barefoot boots.
avoid minimalist/super thin ones if you work on your feet, you WILL notice a difference from regular shoes that have a lot more squish underfoot. But as long as it's zero drop + wide toebox, I highly recommend.

Man, It'd be nice if footwear having just zero drop + wide toe box was more common, especially when it comes to work shoes and boots. I've got a pair of minimalist shoes as my daily/workout wears and they're great but sometimes I just need something with a sturdier sole and a bit more protection.

You don't need a raised heel because you aren't putting your feet in stirrups all day
You don't need arch support because it's not good for your just like sitting in a padded chair all day is not good for you

        >You don't need arch support because it's not good for your just like sitting in a padded chair all day is not good for you
nah this is moronic, My mother had collapsed arches and it was fricking up her gait so bad that it was giving her chronic back pain and forcing her to be almost completely sedentary. She got orthopedic arch inserts and a year later she ran a 5k.

          Anonymous

She should LP the inserts and gradually decrease the support so that her foot can support itself.

Her arch collapsed from years of wearing bad shoes. You put the foot and achillies in an unnatural position since birth, you sandwich it with all this support and the normal motor function and musculature you have switch off. Then one day your arch collapses. It's like a person who just sits in a computer chair all day will struggle to get in a squatting position. Modern shoes are a misstep of science that arose from dumb fashion trends in earlier times. Very good revenue source though.

Will improve your balance by a lot, which gives you real stability improvements for knee dominant movements.

    Most definitely NOT a meme.
I recommend Altra, but their QC is kind of shit, though. If your shoe lasts the first 2 weeks, it'll last for a good long while.
If your foot is particularly fricked up (big toe smashed in/collapsed arch) you will want to do some rehab. Check out Squat University on YT, he has some good exercises for it.

Perfection, I use them for everything. I own vibrams, meme sandals, and basic Amazon barefoot shoes. Honestly the cheap amazon shoes are just as good and look the most normal. Raised heel squat shoes are still better for squats as long as they aren't a mobility cope. Hard sole flat shoes like converses are maybe a tiny bit better for deadlifts, but I don't notice it much and don't wear them anymore.

The biggest downsides to barefoot shoes is most of them are designed to look as ugly as possible, and if you see can somehow manage to find a decent looking pair they still look like clown shoes. That said, I almost exclusively wear barefoot or zero drop shoes with wide toe boxes. Vivobarefoot and Xero are usually my go to.

I really like mine from Xero. Comfortable as frick and I hate heels, so a flat sole is real good too.

Is there some model or manufacturer that makes wide shoes that don't look like shit, I'm sorry but the ones in the picture look like some kind of moronic 2$ chink shoe

It's fricking crazy that the industry has standardized narrow shoes. It's ~~*them*~~, isn't it? To keep you buying new shoes since your old ones hurt.

I don't know shit about barefoot shoes, but I made my wife quit her job about a year ago. She is almost exclusively barefoot or wearing flip flops now unless there is bad weather. Her toes have started to spread out more and her ankle and knees feel better than they used to.

Xero are the best gym shoes I've had so far (feel when doing deadlifts, squat)
Never tried wearing them outside the gym. I walk with a slight pronation that I've never investigated how to fix

They're awesome. The feeling of having strong feet and being able to stretch your toes out throughout the day is hard to describe. It's like taking a deep breath after years of shallow breathing. Part of your body has basically atrophied, and you rejuvenate it by letting it move through its natural plane of motion. Modern shoes are torture in comparison.

I wear nothing but zero drop shoes or sandals with as little padding as possible because I like the way I walk and run barefoot. I've been running for almost 5 years in this type of footwear or barefoot. People warned me about how not having arch support was going to mess my feet up, but I have never had foot pain. They might suck if you have an abnormally high or low arch though.

Anyone got any recommendations for shoes that are somewhere in-between 'barefoot' and regular? Bonus points for UK availability and not too expensive.

I recommend using inserts on barefoot shoes for something inbetween.

I don't know your threshold on "expensive", but i like a German brand "Wildlings". I imported a pair to Norway a while back with no issue (they have shit local selection). Still using them some three years later, only small issue was small stitching thing i fixed with super glue. 100% cloth, no plastic like most other running shoes (even other barefoot ones (minus the rubber sole of course))
Buy the wool insert if you decide on these btw.

Its not a meme but at the same time it won't fix your issue. You have to start doing foot exercises to get toe control and then the toe spread.
My feet were always cold and cramped up like crazy. I can finally start feeling my toes now and my feet feels warm now; less cramping but I still get some.
Don't underestimate how important your feet are anons. I broke my foot once and it made everything in life more difficult
