why is muay thai class so much fun?

If its Trad Myau Thai, work with trad myau thai because most people are going to use that in myau thai comp and don't be an asshole about it, treat it as practice when you absolutely HAVE to up close and personal in a closed space like a hallway.

Yes if you are faced with people that know how to fight/are potential pro level fighters. Otherwise a typical DYEL MMA fighter could fuck you up due to sheer violence given to your slow ass.

Hint: Learn to do some explosive work at the least like clean & jerk or KB russian swings.

As long as you are not breaking any rule (lmaoheadbutting in the clinch) you are actually doing them a favor expanding their knowledge.

I went from tkd to mma (I also did boxing or I would have been raped), the striking sparring was heavily thay based as usual and faking a low kick to have them check it only to retract the kicking leg and sidekick them was good fun. Obw I could have done real damage as I was one of the biggest (for you) guys there but the point is fine as long as you are not hurting badly your sparring partner, you are actually teaching them new tricks and most importantly how to deal with them in a safe environment.

First off I will say I have trained Judo in my youth and Sambo in my late teens/adult years, I'm not that great compared to true champions.

So, I dropped in at a bjj school to get some mat time in while I am working, I have never done bjj but watched the gracie and machado videos and it looks a lot like Judo Newaza with more ground techniques. I told the sensei i've done some sambo and judo and had my own gi and white belt but never done bjj, he said it was fine and I paid my drop in fee - sweet!

Although I prefer standup, newaza is a lot of fun and I've won a lot of matches with newaza in judo and pins in wrestling. The warmups from bjj seemed really similar to judo except they didn't do any standing drills or ukemi, but lots of rolling movements and inversions! The sensei taught some open guard passes against a specific open guard (They had a name for it, but I honestly couldn't understand it. It sounded Portuguese??) + some sweeps. Through this part of class I had a lot of fun and really learned a lot, everyone was very encouraging and nice! It was similar to judo but more detailed with a lot of 'little tricks', it was actually really neat.

      2/?

Okay, so now the sensei says its time to roll and groups me up with a purple belt (I honestly don't know if this is a high or low belt at this point, its a child's rank in Judo). I start standing and he starts on his butt (???) and we slap hands. I don't know what to do with him on his butt so I snap him down into a cradle and pin him for a while before switching to kuzure kami shiho. From kuzure kami shiho he tried to go upsidedown to get out, but I dropped my shoulder in his chest and pulled up on his head into his chest (chest compression) and after a while, he taps. After he tapped he said "You don't have to go so hard", I apologize and ask if he has any injuries, he says no and we slap hands again. This time he starts on his butt again but goes upside down and does hiza juji gatame (illegal in judo), I tap right away because I have never really trained techniques like that and it hurt my knee a little. I ask if those are legal (in Judo and Wrestling they are not) and he says "kind of" with a big smile on his face. I didn't know if he was kidding or what but it frickin hurt. So we slap hands and restart and he shoot a single leg on me from his butt. I counter into Uchi Mata and land on him and he yells in pain. I get off right away and apologize but he is trying to catch his breath and walks to the side of the mat. I ask again if he's ok but he doesn't say anything and just stares passed me (??). I didn't understand this at all because he was bigger than me and I didn't even throw it hard. (although he DID NOT use any ukemi???)

By this time the buzzer went off and the sensei grouped me up with himself. Sensei doesn't seem happy at all and says "Now you roll with me.", I oblige and bow out of respect (sensei is a 2nd dan and again I am just a white belt in bjj). The buzzer goes off and the round starts, we are both standing and slap hands. Sensei grabs a cross grip and I counter by going into russian and riding him to the ground (wrestling style). When we hit the ground I try for waki gatame but switch to front headlock and setup shime-waza with the collar. Sensei doesn't tap but doesn't move (???). I eventually let go and switch to flip him over, I am now in Yoko Kami Shiho and apply heavy pressure, he tries to cross face and I get ude garami, sensei taps. I stand back up and sensei stands up, we go again slapping hands. Sensei ducks under my initial grip and goes from tani o toshi but slams his hips into my knee (ouch), I counter by switching to harai makikomi with georgian grip and land on top (this throw was harder because sensei was driving his hips into my knee, so i had to move faster) and switch to kuzure kami shiho gatame and apply more shime waza, sensei taps. Buzzer goes off shortly after and sensei slaps me on the back saying "Nice job, sand bagger". I stand up and tell the sensei "I am not sand bagging, sensei?? I told you before class I have wrestled and done some Judo." At this point sensei is standing, staring at me and no one is training now. Sensei points to the door and says "There it is until you wanna be honest". I didn't know what to do so I bowed myself out and left the dojo.

Is this common in bjj? Did I do something wrong? I was really, really, really confused! I was most sincere in my apologies to the purple belt guy, I honestly didn't know if purple belt was a high or low rank? (I know now it's low based on skill level, but still)

If someone could clear this up, I would be very grateful?? I want to train BJJ in the future because it looks fun but what happened was NOT fun at all and i'll stay with wrestling and judo if people are going to be so hostile??

      thanks

What does sand bagging mean? Never trained any martial arts but this was an interesting read. To me it seems like he was butthurt that you are a white belt in their sport and fucking them all up kek

The sensei was accusing him of lying about his experience level so he could dunk on beginners. Anon told him he did other grappling martial arts before so the sensei was just sour that he got mogged. I would have walked out too. How much could you learn from a "master" with a bad attitude who you beat twice in one round?

op was probably a retard who tried to beat up a kid to help his ego and was asked to leave. 100% chance theyre lying. 20 years of bjj and ive heard similar stories and theyre always bullshit.

sounds like you just went to a gym below your skill level - like it or not a bunch of these places belt up on the basis that the white and blue can easily be achieved a total combat newbie after taking a handful of their classes.

sounds like sensei got bitched out and expected you to be barely literate in combat and got pissy when that wasn't the case

find somewhere that takes it more seriously, don't shy away from BJJ as a whole - you clearly have some talent, just find somewhere that will nurture it

What does sand bagging mean? Never trained any martial arts but this was an interesting read. To me it seems like he was butthurt that you are a white belt in their sport and fucking them all up kek

kinda means the combat equivalent of a card shark - pretending to be less experienced than you are so you can compete against people you'll find easy to beat
