>gyms cost anywhere between 7000-9000 yen/month for just a basic ass gym with no additional amenities
>the vast majority are located in malls or mixed use buildings
>cramped as frick
>full of old equipment or lacking essentials like deadlift platforms
>insufficient AC
>it's rare for a gym to provide cleaning material for the equipment, usually you gotta bring your own towel
>full of casuals that dick around and waste my fricking time
>hardly any chicks

it's fricking dire, lads. at least on the bright side most of them don't allow tattoogays in, and the few serious lifters I've met have been solid dudes

What's fitness culture like in Japan, Daichi? How do people react to you working out? Is work culture really that bad?

I lived in Japan for a few years. Gym culture was just fine tbh. Everybody minds their own business and the whole country has a culture of "don't inconvenience anybody else in public" so the gym was always clean and well kept. Nobody was blasting music on their phone.

That being said, nobody was lifting big. There was a pro amateur boxer in my gym and he was the only guy who went hard. Pretty sure he was owned by the yakuza, he worked security at a nearby casino. Super nice dude though.

yakuza are pretty chill. if you don't frick with them and interact "outside of business hours" they can be incredibly accomodating and you won't even notice they're apart of it.

I think you will notice they are Yakuza if you aren't socially autistic.

it's not that simple. my cousin once told me a story about how she didn't find any place to sleep while visiting japan, so she just went to some shady motel-ish place. it was very "abandoned" and not really a "professional", full hotel, just the average motel with visitors <50. An old woman served and cooked the food, and at some point she met her nephews, which had tattoos clearly showing them being yakuza. she only noticed this later, and until then she was just talking to them as if they were "regular" people. YES, you do notice easily in public, they want to indicate it without being too overt, but as i said, "outside business hours" they're just regular people.

If he'd fight against an amateur pro boxer which one would win?

      >What's fitness culture like in Japan, Daichi
there is none, skinny guys are more or less the only trend. if you see a fit-looking guy there is a good chance he's either not Japanese or he plays some kind of sport professionally or at a high amateur level. as for girls, forget it, the only girls you'll see in Japanese gyms are foreigners - mainly flips and rarely chinese girls

      >How do people react to you working out?
i have never spoken to a Japanese person for any length of time without them commenting on my body during our initial meeting

      >Is work culture really that bad?
it depends on where you work. personally, i love my job.

any tips for a lifter moving there for school?

No time to lift when your culture is about taking a 2 hour train ride to work, working for 9 hours, going out to the bar with your idiot boss so you can inflate his ego for 2 hours, then 2 hours home, then sleep, then commit suicide if you miss one day of work.

    >cleaning lady wanted to feel my arms
    feels good bros

also OP you can just go to a community gym for your city/prefecture for 300yen a day.

      >300 yen a day
      >multiply that by 30 for every day in a month
      >comes out to 9000 yen a month

      That's what he said moron

I am assuming he means the 300yen is a onetime fee and if you don't go everyday it will be significantly less than 9000

I would've given the cleaning lady more than my arm to feel & clean up as is her duty if you catch my drift.

Japan in general is really cheap vs western world if you don't plan to buy your own house or go to gym. Food is cheap, so if you can bulk and build on calisthenics or home weights you can do that quite easily, japanese culture is more focused on providing for the family and such not muh gym and muh individualism. 9-5? More like 9-7 b***h ass, you better not be the first one to go either!

When I lived there I would sneak into the University gyms for free. Would recommend that since the quality of the gyms was better than the community centers and with less old ppl. Not much worse than the 5000-10000¥/月 gyms. Plus you can spit game on the uni b***hes
