Been following what the IST sticky said; weightlifting. Never lifting before. Hit a month of gym membership. Followed the Stronglifts' 5x5.
Now I realize that I only need to do Squat, Bench Press, Barbell Row, Overhead Press, and Deadlift. I think I will ditch the gym membership someday and purchase pic related on my home.
Its a bit expensive tho. For $1,000, is it worth to ditch my membership, or IST has cheaper alternative?

    Of course it's worth, it's just the matter of time. If you are planning to lift for years to come 1000-2000$ for a home gym will surely pay off.
    I bought everything in that picture plus cable/pulley attachment and it's the best investment of my life.
    Even if you change your mind, you can sell everything for 90% of what you paid.

      this. as long as you don't get shit tier equipment and take ok care of it, weight never really loses resale value. The benefit of walking 20ft to lift vs driving to a gym is also immense.

    You get the home gym for convenience, not to save money. No travel time, complete privacy, don't need to share yadda yadda yadda. If you got the money and don't plan on immediately quitting, I think it's worth it for anyone who has the space for it.

          8 years, 4 months. I plan to still be lifting in 8 years, and I'll bet my equipment will still be fully functional by then. You're also not considering:
          >$10/mo is the bare-ass minimum any gym will charge, most are closer to $20/$30
          >Also doesn't include the yearly fee a lot of gyms charge on top of monthly
          >You're only counting one membership fee; I'm planning to let my family use my shit. Probably a few close neighbors too.
          Homegym is worth it even before you consider all that, but when you do take it into account, it makes me wonder why anyone bothers with commercial gyms.

              even IF you want to follow strictly powerlifting, doing some accessories is optimal for strength gains and musclebuilding, for example you want to isolate your hamstrings as they dont get enough work from strictly squats and deadlifts

        I am not saying PPL is magic, but it is much better than SS or SL.
        It has been proved by many studies that working a muscle group 2 times a week is ideal for muscle development, also squatting 3 times a week will frick your knees and give you undesired body proportions. Men should focus on upper body development.

          big legs are definitely more impressive than a big upper body, and getting a big upper body is much easier. People expect gymgoers to focus on big arms, and if you need to focus on upper body to get big you're a GDE who should probably just give up. PPL is for dyels who will never put up impressive numbers

                Where do you find the nice gyms? I usually end up lifting at commercial gyms because of their ease of access, but they rarely have equipment as nice as the one in your pic

                It was a commercial gym, I was just lucky enough to have a very new gym close to my house

          lmao no it wont. i do weighted calisthenics, powerlifting, and cardio 6 days out of the week. i still look dyel but can put up decent numbers in all my lifts and exercises. as for knee injuries, you will only get injured if you are squatting like an absolute moron for months. the only time i have ever gotten injured was when some jackass bumped into my barbell during my squat, my right knee got sprained for a month

      OP never stated their goal was to be a bodybuilder. PPL is good for homosexuals like you who want to chase perfect body proportions. But for general health and fitness, or strength/athletic training, PPL is not ideal.

    Lift for a year at the gym before buying anything for the home. If you can maintain consistency, then the home equipment will actually go to use. If you quit the gym after several months, any home equipment will become nothing but expensive clothing racks.

    Most of the stuff will maintain its value for a very long time if it's taken care of. If you have time to look around for good deals you can probably make use of a home gym for several years without losing any money to it.

    -Spend $500 on pre-owned stuff.
    -Look after it for 5 years.
    -sell it on for $500
    -total cost: 0

    -$20/mo gym membership
    -5 years of use = $1,200

    Switched to the home gym thing a while ago, probably still under $1k or so: rack, weights, 2 barbells, mats, some dumbbells, cable attachment. Cost aside, working out at home is just so much better.
    Started with PPL, got good gains with it, but don't like that style of workout. Got to ~700lb total with PPL from ~550lb starting, and now do full body 3-4x a week, and about 1050lb total.

        It just doesn't seem optimal to spend time walking around a rack, moving the bb from the floor to the rack, into the rack, changing the pin pipe level etc.
        I think it's probably because I switched to full body and really started to hate it. it's in pieces in my attic now 🙂

      Just get something which isn't Rogue and don't get chink shit from Amazon (chink shit from Amazon is actually okay).

      In the UK Mirafit is a good budget / quality brand. I think ForceUSA is an equivalent for the US.

    I plan on buying a house in the next year, and one of my considerations is garage size. I have no intention on parking a car in there, but I’m turning it into my home gym. A real nice one. Lay down quality mats. Buy one of these w/ a deadlift platform, a cable machine, pull up/dip bar and in the future a nice dumbell rack and maybe a treadmill.

    That is my dream. To be able to workout in privacy, never wait on equipment, and no distractions sounds like heaven. Bonus if the house has a nice view of the sunset at the evening so I can workout with the garage door open to look at a nice scenery
