What do you think is the percentage of the male population that can bench press 100 kg ?

Yeah, I'd say 0.05 - 0.1 maybe, so 1 in 1000 tops. Lots of old males and ones that don't even go to the gym.

No. I find when I make progress with dumbells the strength doesn't really transfer back to barbell. But it is way more functional and produces better anesthetics.

        >aesthetics

Debatable, the pec has about 3 different areas that want direct work to really make it developed; only ignoramuses try to do this with only one exercise

I'd estimate 80-90% of the male population above 20 years old could bench 2pl8. The reason you don't see it is because of 2 factors. The first, most don't frequent the gym so they don't really get the opportunity. The second, their unsure of the technique and likely stick with 1pl8 due to fear.

100kg is a novice lift. Once you're hitting 140/160kg it starts to get advanced.

80-90 is lot. You either need to work a manual labor job, do strength-reliant sports or actually go to the gym.
Being a fat frick helps, but you still need to train a little bit to get to 2pl8, and most fatties don't do that.
Virtually no man above 55 will be able to hit 2pl8, and boomers are still a massive demographic.
On the younger end, I see so many zoomers flouncing around with noodle arms these days - not many of them are making it either.

Best guess, 10-25%. There's a ton of construction workers that I don't see day-to-day who could probably hit it with no training.

        >There's a ton of construction workers that I don't see day-to-day who could probably hit it with no training.
Chest/pushing strength isn't something you easily develop by doing manual labor, not to mention there is technique involved.

Yeah, manual labor would be crap like pulling or perhaps strong grip/farmer carry type stuff

Looking at the population of my current gym, there are only 2 guys obviously above 55 and one of them can bench well over 2pl8. the other is just fricking around.

So assuming this is a representative sample of the general population, 50% of men over the age of 55 can bench 2pl8

This actually seems about right. I'm a twig and I can bench 80kg at the moment because of my extremely underdeveloped chest muscles. Most guys have way more muscle than me. It's just that they don't go to the gym regularly and haven't really tried to bench anywhere close to their limit.

Many homosexuals here think they "got to" 2pl8 bench in 3-6 months - when in reality all it means they probably had the muscle to do so all along, it was all technique, CNS adaptation and simply the time it took to linearly work up from whatever weight they started at.

People have different leverages which make the lift drastically harder or easier. If you are barrel-chested with stubby arms (Nick Walker type) then you can probably bench 70kg+ completely untrained and 100kg in a short time. If you have long arms and a slim torso it will be a lot harder. Every inch of length of your upper arms adds a singificant amount of torque your muscles must develop to move the same weight, and every inch of torso volume reduces the rom.

      Anonymous

I am 5'10" with 6'1" arm span. Not great leverages for benching. I hit 100kg after 3 months of benching, at 78kg BW.
      Although;
2 months before that I joined a gym and only did OHP, weighted pullups and dips and arms. Probably some carryover.
Before that I did some casual calisthenics for a few months, just pullups and dips with BW every other day.
A decade ago I lifted weights in my late teens. Didn't barbell bench at all if I remember correctly, only used dumbbells. Then sat on my ass throughout my 20's until starting again last spring with recreational bicycling and visiting a calisthenics park.
So maybe not really comparable to someone who has sat on their ass their entire life, but leverages really don't matter. 100kg bench isn't a big lift. Everyone can hit it if they aren't crippled and apply themselves.

205lbs for 4 and you have a good shot at 225lbs.
        That's the heaviest I did a week and a half before I hit 225lbs. Ran a % based program.

When I was at zero training and first started lifting, I couldn't even UNRACK 1pl8.
I got injured and had to deload, and went back to being unable to unrack 1pl8 without working back up to it within a couple of months.
I'd say more people would injure themselves ( maybe even more deaths, even) than doing a single rep of 100kg.

In my three years of training 6x/week at public gyms I have seen maybe a handful of men bench anywhere near or over 100kg, same for squat and deadlift anything over 140kg. And the dudes that do put up big numbers are usually at least 90kg+ bodyweight.

You must be going to planet fitness or something. At my gym I'd say 30% of the regulars over the age of 30 (who work out at the same times I do, which is mornings) bench 2pl8 for reps.

      Maybe it's because I'm in north-eastern Europe?

        Anonymous

I think the OP is asking what proportion of the general population can lift >100kg. My shitty Google search suggests that anywhere of 7.5-9% of the the European population holds a gym membership. I'm not a STEM gay, but you could probably cut that in half and get 4-5% men. I'm sure there's a better way to mathematically say this, but it's still impressive if you're in the top 30% of lifters out of a population of roughly 5% men.

Well the German equivalent of planet fitness... so McFit and XTRAFIT. I think maybe you and a lot of people here are just maybe overestimating percentages here. If there are 40 odd people in the gym (free weights area) at any one time, you're telling me at least 12 of them are benching at least 100kg or more for reps? Sorry my dude but big doubt. I've seen maybe 12 dudes total in my three years do that.

1% maybe or less (of American/British men under 50). I'm talking about a real, competition legal rep of 100kg. Here are the gyms I've visited (multiple times as a member, not just one-off visits). This over like 15 years:
    >24-Hour Fitness (many locations Washington, Colorado, and California. Basically all the locations in the Seattle/LA areas)
    >X-Sport Fitness (at least two in the Chicago area)
    >Anytime Fitness (one in Texas and one in the UK)
    >The Gym Group (one location in the UK)
    >Crunch Gym (NYC)
    >NY Sports Club (multiple locations in NYC/Westchester)
    >Equinox (Eastchester, NY)
    >Planet Fitness (one location in the LA area)
    >At least 5 different university gyms
    >Two apartment gyms that were nice enough that I'd call them a real gym, one of which had a bench
    >A country club gym
    >One public gym in the UK
    >A pretty nice boutique gym in Seattle that I belonged to for a while
    >My HS gym
I can count on one hand the number of people I've seen doing a 4pl8 DL and one of the fingers is me. I might have to use my fingers/toes for 3pl8 squat but the number is less than 20 for sure. 2pl8 bench is far more common but it's still rare. I see guys who clearly have the muscle mass for it but rarely do I see them actually benching that amount of weight. Almost all men walking around the gym are DYEL though and for sure could not, and those are the "fit" guys who go to the gym. As far as untrained individuals who could hit 2pl8 after a week of training or whatever? Forget it. That number is so vanishingly small that it wouldn't impact the statistics at all. I'm sorry but construction wagies aren't as strong as you think they are and you aren't going to build up to intermediate strength in a highly specific push movement like the bench by doing work-related farmer's walks with buckets of concrete or whatever. If anything they'd have strong spinal erectors and legs.

filter out everyone over 40 and under 18 = 25% men left

75% of those dont work out = 6.25% of men left

50% of gym goers can do it = 3.125% of men

    so about 3%

      >50% of gym goers can do it
i can assure you that 1/2 of all gym goers between 18 and 40 cannot bench 2 plates, maybe 1/4 and thats being generous

im talking about regular gym goers. 225lb for 1 measly rep is not a lot of weight. this is also assuming a white country maybe not in india or china or wherever you are from.
