Have you seen how scrawny the average bowler is? Its 99% technique.

Where I go most of the bowlers are old and fat.

I’ve bowled in leagues and have seen 65 year old women bowl over 200. It’s mostly form. If you want anecdotal advice, I would do rice bucket stuff (not for bowling specifically) but noticed it felt like it helped.

candlepin is the shit, sad that they'll probably be gone soon. candlepin alleys still feel like they are lost in the 70s and 80s, it's great.

I was captain of my high school team and have a 300. Was also the only guy that lifted weights. Most of the people that bowled in high school were fat and autistic or pale and scrawny.

You don’t need to exercise to bowl well.

How much autism do I need to get better then if gains won't help?

Idk I was pretty fricking autistic in high school. I was bowling everyday after school at “practice”.

I had a perfect game all the way until 9 in league. I really wanted that fricking ring. Me and some buddies spent 2 years going at it pretty consistently, but we haven’t bowled seriously in like 6 years.

Every time I open my lockbox I put my ring on. It’s my only sport related trophy. I haven’t bowled in years. I’d be lucky to break 150 my first day back.

I feel like im gonna break my thumb. I just got a new ball and had it drilled so I can stop using the house balls. Normally I bowled with two fingers eith house balls and im trying to learn with a thumb for curve. Apparently it's normal for it to be snug and the discomfort means im holding it wrong. Pic related is the ball I got.

That’s right. If you want to get good you want a ball with hook so you can come into the pocket at an angle. I never had any structural problems with my thumb but you do get nasty callouses.

I reckon they're helpful, I've only played bowling twice but if I had to lift for it I'd do those tbf, also more core stuff and stuff like russian twists just to have a more solid base

    230 average bowler/coach here.

Power largely comes from technique and unironically your legs.

None of your power means anything if you don't throw a hook, and given you've started with a Rhino you're not at that point.

Lifting helps in that it helps your balance and stability as well as giving more options once you do throw a hook.

Farmers carry can help with grip stability, anything that strengthens your legs helps generate more power with proper technique, anything that helps your shoulder stay flexible helps as well.

I can get a hook. Control is my biggest thing because the hook is inconsistent. Sometimes it goes from the right and into the pocket. Others it hooks so much it cuts across the head pin and will hit the last 3 on the left. I play golf which is also a lot about technique but im learning bowling requires more of the same autism.

There are a lot of factors at play. Pay attention to how the ball is rotating as jt goes down the lane, the axis on which it rotates will change how the ball reacts.

You're also most likely bowling on used lanes which then adds more variables. Who bowls on the lanes before you will also completely change how the ball reacts. If a bunch of right handers threw games with heavy hook, they probably burnt up a spot and your ball will grab and take off harder. If it was a bunch of casual straight bowlers using house balls, they probably dragged the oil further down and now your ball is barely hooking.

Attempt to find someone 210+ average and befriend them and have them help you learn to read the lanes.

Sorry for late response, just bowled in back to back tournaments.

Usually there's leagues where the better bowlers will usually be.

Find one who clearly throws a good ball and befriend him. Most random people won't have a clue on oil conditions.

If there are regulars who are any decent they'll probably recognize you and hopefully be willing to help. I personally love helping new people get into it.

Most leagues are casual, there are some men's leagues that actually care about what you average but most are pretty inviting of new people who want to try.

Bowl when its your turn and use lane courtesy and you'll get along just fine.

Any tips on picking up the 10 pin for a right handed hook? I swear if I was more consistent with it my average would probably jump up 20 points. I used to just switch hands until they outlawed it.

Get a plastic ball if you're doing it long term.

Otherwise stand as far left as you feel comfortable then roll it through the middle to it.

Most bowlers have a potbelly, so forcefeeding and beer drinking to failure. Once you are a slob, you're ready!
