Right, but then does the middle class Chinaman just have no interest in the sport? surely they have fans, and then people who wish to lift in their free time.

China is full of bugmen, the only thing that brings them joy is the torture of animals and eating penises

I'm Chinese, being strong isn't a big deal. Women care about money so they buy expensive things to show off for women.

their fans are fans simply bc of them winning. they have no interest in the sport itself or fitness in general. the moment the athletes show weakness or any controversy they get dropped immediately and literally memory holed the next day

I visited Shanghai a few years back
found a nice gym with a few cool guys, some of who worked there
however the only people who were ever in the gym were these guys and they kinda just hung out there

      >Gym culture is for gays
I meant it by how well-equipped your average gym is. China is still full of smith machines. You're lucky to find power racks.

The vast majority of the country earns less than 5k usd a year. Most of it is third world tier living conditions with a few second world major cities trying to present themselves to first worlders as being just as good. Even in the model cities you can easily find workers sleeping in food stalls because they don't have a home.
Obviously China doesn't have a gym culture.

-Athletes are roiding as much as they like not just lower dose like other athletes in less authoritarian countries
-Also most of China outside the big cities are 3rd world countries, so no gym culture
-Extremely competitive work culture so less free time for the gym

Remnant of the old soviet system for athletic development, they shoved kiddos into sports for athletic success but the general populace wasn't a concern so nobody ever bothered. Same thing with cuba, and some of the slav countries in the 90s before gym culture really took off there. Gym culture in general isn't too popular outside the anglosphere.

    >the rest of the nation and their "gym culture" is terrible
This couldn't be further from the truth, at least not in the last two decades. There's a massive gym culture in China from the teenager to late 20s range. Lu Xiaojun is almost entirely the reason why, it's pretty incredible really. If you were to ask a western teenager to name any athlete, they'd probably tell you the name of a football player or basketball player. In China they'd tell you the name of an Olympic weightlifter (or a ping pong player, lol).
However, lifting is still an entirely upper middle class thing in China. Since the vast majority of China's population are lower middle class to poverty tier, it may seem like China has disproptionately low interesting in lifting. Again, this isn't true, it simply isn't feasible for a lot of these people to spend time at the gym when they have to be working to feed themselves. Chine may have tens of millions of lifters, but they have a billion plus non-lifters diluting their image.
