Bikes are overpriced

Why the fuck are these things so expensive? The cost doesn't seem worth it considering how easily they can get stolen even with a lock.

The used market for bikes is incredible. Most people let them rust and rot after a couple uses.

Because you are massively overbiking if you buy something like that. I still ride my hardtail from 2010. I put some better forks and brakes on it, and few other parts but that's it.

      Based hardtail bro

Friggin love my HT. I like to mog MTB gear queers as I zip past them with their $15k setup and $2k worth of riding apparel. Wish people still rode for funsies, not for recognition.

I actually have a full sus bike too. But it's even older, like a 1998 FSR with a URT style shock, it's pretty much just sat in my garage for years though due to lack of maintenance. Would probably get some respect at the trails simply due to the age of it.

Who rides for recognition? Everyone I know thinks bikes are gay and annoying. I’m constantly defending mtb as fun. Road biking is a lost cause because of the outfit.

Mostly PNW homos who work tech in Seattle/Bellevue or are insta-famous. I’m a WA fag myself, but I actually grew up in the mountains and like the fun of it.

Sweet deal man, get it lubed up and take it out on the trails.

i got a pretty dope mountain bike for free 14 years ago, was like 700 new back then

just now started riding it again and its fucking awesome, i just kinda wish it had more gears. im developing an addiction to going as fast as my body can allow me on that thing lol and keep pushing to go faster and faster

Mountain bikes have fewer gears these days, 14 years ago most were triple chainsets with 27 gears which is too many.

i might get a real road bike, a cheap one at some point just for street riding.

i havent built up enough endurance to take the mountain bike offroad yet, i get crippling adductor pumps just from riding in the highest gear for a half mile. which is crazy because ive never gotten that from squatting or deadlifts

          Anonymous

Riding offroad will gas you out very hard even if you have decent endurance riding on the roads. It's a much more full body kind of workout. That's assuming you don't just go to a bike park where they have lifts or make the climbs as easy as possible.

Overvaluing by bike fetishists. Materials are pretty cheap and assembly is mostly by machine and some handwork at the end. Unless you're buying some bossed up e-bike (which realistically should also cost way less since the motors aren't that sophisticated) you should never exceed 800-1000 €/$. Everything above that is pure gimmicks and shit. Get a bike that can go comfortably on both roads and dirt and that you can sit on for extended periods of time without it being a discomfort. Invest some spar bucks into maybe some nice lights and maybe better brakes (these tend to be shittier on most commerical bikes). Also get a small repair set and a set of spare tires. Regularly check and fix your bike if needed. Congrats you are now a bike owner and that shit will last you ~15 years with small amounts of effort here and there

Have you not seen those guys ride mountain bikes down pretty much vertical walls? You can't do that with a 100 dollar bike. Or how about a road bike descending at over 45 mph? Walmart wheels will literally explode.

          >if a bike isn't overpriced it's from walmart
I bet you take your bike to the mechanic shop, too

he could go to any bike shop and buy a used bike with a decent brand and enjoy it for years. 500ish dollars will get a perfectly usable older bike.

Trick is to buy no-brand cheapo that is as lightweight as similar brand name. You buy a frame, everything else is replaceable and will be replaced down the line. Sure you might initially end up with a little worse shimanos but then within two years you have to replace them anyways at a service. That's when you upgrade.

So much this. You're buying a frame, the frame can last indefinitely -- basically until you have that smash or tumble that twists it. Everything else does the Ship of Theseus.
