BJJ is shit in a streetfight

I say this as someone who does BJJ
>Most BJJ guys have shit takedowns -> some places don't even drill takedowns
>If you are a smaller person fighting a bigger person, being in closed guard = you will get slammed
>Too much focus on submissions, not enough focus on topside control and pins
>Most BJJ guys are in fact total pussies and cry if you throw them a bit too hard

If you want to take a grappling art which is more realistic for fights take wrestling or judo. Just lol if you aren't learning any standup grappling and claim you can defend yourself. In a street fight you aren't going to be fighting people your size, sitting in closed guard will get you slammed and will either injure you or force you to break your guard.

In a streetfight a jiujitero would die. What are you going to do? Pull guard on me? You'll be forced to do standup.
BJJ ruleset favours buttscooters like you, you pull me into guard and I break it. I have to still engage with you, I can't just stand back up and make you play standup - whereas IRL you would stand back up or take the risk and be stamped on

You don't need a whole lot of takedown skills against a non-grappler, go watch UFC1. Do whatever is more fun.

I say this is a HS wrestler-turned-hobbyist-judoka, a sloppy BJJ single leg or morote gari is more than enough to bring the fight to the ground against a non-grappler.

Rolling doesn't really exist in judo, because usually you bypass their guard from the throw and go straight into some flavor of side control pin. Or your cracking a turtle because, like wrestling, refs get bored of groundwork quickly

I think judoka have pretty good armbar defense, which is worth pointing out because it's the most successful sub in BJJ, and one of the most effective across judo, mma, nogi, and bjj.

If you do BJJ only, I can assure you, you will never learn how to do a takedown.
BJJ guys just sit in their defensive posture stiff arming everyone and too scared to commit to a takedown, thing is, that stance means sure you can defend but you will never be able to throw or take someone down. After 3 failed single legs or throw attempts, BJJ homies just sit on their ass.

This is not true, single leg takedowns and arm drags are the most common takedowns and setups in BJJ, all places where I trained (Russia, Belarus, Japan, Turkey) drill them

          Anonymous

Are you training gi or nogi? If you're getting armdrags on people with gi then you're up against literal noobs.
Also training and drilling isn' the same as hitting it in a live roll. Takedowns are one of those things you need to do live, most people hesitate and don't put full commitment into the takedown and hence get stuffed.

This is not true, single leg takedowns and arm drags are the most common takedowns and setups in BJJ, all places where I trained (Russia, Belarus, Japan, Turkey) drill them

      Streetfight martial art essentials are:

Wrestling, obvious reasons, allows you to control whether a fighting stays standing or not, control your opponent, defend yourself against bumrush takedowns, invalidate their punching, etc.

Lethwei, obvious reasons again, it's muy thai with headbutts and bareknuckle. The best clinching martial art there is and every street fight winds up in some sort of clinch.

Judo, most obvious reasons, trains you to use people's clothes as a weapon to frick them facefirst into the pavement.

      >takedown
can't you just kick them in the face?

        Anonymous

Well I mean it depends on what take down it is, like I mean if you kick them while looking for a double/single leg you'll be putting yourself off balanced or giving them a leg. Now body lock takedowns are whole different story and are also way more cooler

Of course. Striking is the counter to grappling. Conversely. Grappling is the counter to striking.

they just have to keep going then tbh, they'll eventually get used to it. I've thrown people with harai goshi in my BJJ class (these guys are 25 btw) and they all freak out as soon as they hit the floor.
They resist the throw too much and end up getting smashed hard

          Not sure about judo though

Judo teaches you good breakfalls and it has a different mindset/meta to wrestling.

          Streetfight martial art essentials are:

Wrestling, obvious reasons, allows you to control whether a fighting stays standing or not, control your opponent, defend yourself against bumrush takedowns, invalidate their punching, etc.

Wrestling is good, I would say learning to sprawl is essential part of grappling.

That's the problem with boxing, while it is worthwhile because of how focused it is on hand to hand striking, the problem is that getting a coach's license is a fricking joke. The gym I go to has a legit coach whose travelled the US with his amateur fighters fighting in different states, but we also got someone who got their amateur coaching license without having ever worked a corner in his life. The latter has managed to bullshit his way into getting two students, both of which have the worst footwork I've seen and this 'coach' has done nothing to correct them. Honestly this 'coach' is going to get his guys hurt, they're 160 beanpoles but he's trying to get them to fight like Mike Tyson.

yea i know sucks without sparring or someone actually teaching you...but....better than getting israeliteed, beaten up (instead of trained) and learning fricking nothing because they neglect you.

So if im gonna have some butthole scream at me instead of teach me...im better off with youtube videos.

at least ill be able to punch harder, last without getting tired and have some "basic" technique against any average street moron.

You seem like an unpleasant training partner with a chip on your shoulder and a giant ego. Drilling for a few months so you can be reasonably trusted not to injure your partner and getting put up against a smaller but more-experienced partner for your first time is common. A smaller person isn't scary, so you can work in; but they have the skills to correct you and protect themselves if you spaz out.

You seem like a sperg who just doesn't "get it" when it comes to combat sports, or a guy with a big ego who expects to be a natural - but gets surprised when he gets smoked by people with more training time.

You can't learn boxing from YouTube. You need someone correcting you at all times. You will pick up all kinds of bad habits and never develop a strong technique. You might not be a match with the coach. Or you might be thin skinned. But you're wasting your time thinking you will learn anything meaningful from videos.

I think a lot of people get into combat sports because they "want to be able to handle themselves if something went down." Not being able to fight is a pretty rational fear.

However, if you avoid places where drunk Black folk congregate, your risk of getting in a fight in da streetz is negligible. And the risks of fighting in uncontrolled environments are immense, before we take into account guns and knives. It's not worth it, and you don't necessarily know how good someone is at fighting by looking at them (unless they have cauliflower ear lol).

Yes. $60/month is extremely reasonable for combat sports coaching. The club will often supply gloves and headgear, but many people end up buying their own. Unless you're competing, you don't need boxing shorts. You do need shoes; you should buy those first - but $60-100 is quite reasonable for sport-specific shoes.

Doing MMA BJJ is far better. Pure BJJ is basically like full body arm wrestling. Most guys who train just pure BJJ leave themselves open to getting fricking hammered by elbows and fists.

In general the value of BJJ has been V A S T L Y overblown by the UFC which has a ruleset that was literally developed by the Gracies to benefit and favour BJJ. If the UFC allowed kicks to a grounded opponent the lean towards BJJ as a necessity would disintegrate.

It's really bad because if you just buck your hips and the other person keeps their hands on your neck, they will fall over and slam their face into the ground. Then you can easily get on their back and give them a real choke (rear-naked choke).

      Anonymous

The armbar from mount is the king of submissions. If you just want to make someone miserable, the forearm to the throat doesn't open up your wrist to being grabbed and manipulated - and makes it harder to be bucked off.

The rape choke is really stupid.

      Anonymous

It's called the rape choke and yes, BJJ has problems with it. You can spot the BJJ noobs ITT because they claim it's easy to counter. In reality, it's considered a dirty, hard to counter technique, that's why most orgs ban it.

In Vale Tudo, it was used for guard passing:

        Anonymous

        >here's how you pass a guard when the uke is completely still
        >here's how you pass a guard with fully extended arms
        >this technique is a hard to counter forbidden technique
Nice. Tell me how many times have you done that or anything similar to a training partner blue belt or higher? I eagerly await your response.

        >grab thumbs, peel arms, shrimp out, take back
        >hip bump sweep
        >block one arm as he extends both arms, arm bar or triangle
Took me 2 minutes to come up with 3 easy answers to this.

Why is this technique banned? Obviously not because it's so powerful and hard to counter (only someone who has never done BJJ before would think this), but obviously because if this was legal you would essentially be legalizing throat punching.

Hmm why don't BJJ tournaments want people punching others in the throat? I have no idea. Must be a forbidden OP grappling technique.

you talk shit, bridge to make them base on the mat, or even a strong bridge and roll will topple them if they don't release the choke. and thats only if they are in mount, if they try that in your guard it's armbar all day

      Anonymous

If you are in full Mount you can upa escape easily. If you try that in guard you're begging to be armbarred or triangled

If you get this you were already good enough to get and keep mount, so kind of a moot point as far as "is BJJ shit?" is concerned.

i wanted to back off but he chased me down
he started to swing and got some punches in on the top of my head but after we both ended up on the ground because we stumbled while we both grapped at each other
he was on top im on the ground
if i didnt knew bjj he would have punched me bloody
i took im into an armbar however and instantly pulled through for break his arm
fight was over after that and i ditched

In my own adult life I've avoided fights by either walking away or joking.

Once when I was in HS I went to a football game. I had to go to the bathroom so I walked across the field to the restrooms. When I left the restroom a crowd of 40 or so black people started circling me and the tallest one asked me if I was from around there. He said he didn't like people using his bathroom. He got in my face and I smelled strawberry starburst and I said, "Man, your breath smells like strawberry starburst" and he started laughing, said I was "alright" and shook my hand. If I was stupid and tried to escalate or fight I'd have probably been beaten moronic.

Best combat sport in a street fight technically speaking is Myau Thai combined with Judo.

I honestly think regular wrestling is better training than Judo in a lot of ways. Especially since simple ties and throws from standing work whether the person is naked or wearing a trenchcoat

Greco-Roman is pretty good not going to argue however finding a good gym is harder than finding a decent Judo gym. There's also a lot of BJJ/Judo cross-over in dojo teachers so they can teach you grappling if you just ask them on some free time.

Even shoot wrestling/ folkstyle are quite good. I've learned a lot of throws from standing just in highschool wrestling (though these throws have tons of crossover with judo, which I've started recently)

            Anonymous

The Judo schools if they are good can teach you No Gi ways to grab since most Judo throws are just like greco/freestyle throws just using the pulling movement of the clothes rather than brute force, you just got to adjust your way of grabbing a little bit to get good at those. Not everyone has time to take off their shirt for a street fight.

              Anonymous

              >if they are good
A good Judo schools teaches you to be good at the sport of judo. Will nogi throws help you win judo matches? Not vs drilling sleeve and lapel uchimata a million times in all sorts of conditions and setups.

Nogi is an afterthought at best, because good judo schools want to make you good at the sport of judo. You have a mythologized view of sport that can only come from someone who doesn't train it.

Seen videos of good coaches that can teach the self-defense applications because Judo was formed out of self-defense ideas of Jujutsu that was used to take down street thugs/hooligans and which is being taught under Taihoujutsu (arresting techniques) to police.

Thank you for admitting that you don't train. Judo is a great sport for self defense. If you can blast someone with osoto or seoi-nage on the mats, you can do it for da streetz.

But self-defense is a tertiary concern and historical curiosity, much like it is for the sport of wrestling. If you go into a wrestling room because you "want be be ready to throw down, if something were to happen", you would be laughed at - and deservedly so. Unless you're training with Japanese cops, you aren't doing arresting techniques.

No Judo was created by studying about 11 different schools of JuJitsu and then taking the crap out and taking the stuff that can't be practiced without causing injury out
JuJitsu being the hand to hand combat styles that Samurai used

It's literally ancient Japanese combatives, not for-da-streets self defence

Something to grab makes wrestling shots a lot harder. This is why, if you watch sambo or <2010 judo, you don't see a lot of wrestling-style doubles, singles, and high crotches. The level change is really difficult when someone has a grip, and the back grip in particular opens up sacrifice throw options.

I think the low single works well in a clothed grappling context.

Greco-Roman is pretty good not going to argue however finding a good gym is harder than finding a decent Judo gym. There's also a lot of BJJ/Judo cross-over in dojo teachers so they can teach you grappling if you just ask them on some free time.

Recreational wrestling should actually be possible to find in Europe or Asia.

          Anonymous

I think it's safer not to shoot and better to use hip tosses, throws, catch the back, and suplexes. If you shoot a double you should be careful because if you get caught in a sprawl by a bigger opponent you're screwed unless you've got great technique. Single leg can be surprisingly safe vs bigger opponents if they can't grapple.

I usually use standing throws entirely even when I wrestled in HS because I had a good sprawl and had lots of time to work clinch / throws with coach.

this is the biggest bait thread I have ever seen and it seems like it's working. You're not completely wrong, but saying BJJ is shit in a street fight is just moronic. You go through a lot of unpleasant things training BJJ and that gets you ready for a fight. Gracie is probably better than the average sport BJJ place I will say.

I'm a smaller dude, about 170 pounds and a little over 6 feet. I have wicked knees and elbows from doing muay thai, these things mixed with BJJ help me feel pretty secure. I have been slammed before, I have been crunched. Obviously you don't pull guard on the street unless you have no choice.

      >Obviously you don't pull guard on the street unless you have no choice.
And yet most bjj starts and ends with some variation of guard. Just be honest and admit bjj (by itself) lends itself to the unathletic crowd. It's more akin to chess than to self defense.

Knowing how to engage and disengage guards isn't just for "unathletic" people. Why would you leave yourself open to chance even if you're a big muscular guy. This argument gets reduce to "big strong man doesn't need technique, he will win". No shit sherlock and he better be massive because if he knows no technique, he's fricked.

"Oh no what if I get into a fight and I end up on the ground because I'm a klutz, they say 99% of basedboys get put on the ground during a fight thank God I do bjj so I can defend myself next time my bull shoves me to the ground". I do jitz but I don't pretend it's for self defense, it's just a fun way to let off some energy and solve a puzzle. If you did something like boxing and/or wrestling (or amateur mma), you'll get a small taste of the actual intensity of someone trying to hurt you while your on your feet.

Totally depends what you like. For me, I really enjoyed spamming the hip bump sweep, osoto gari, guillotine break down -> back take (and obviously rear-naked choke from there), and the double under pass.

You should focus on defense pretty much exclusively when you're new, though. And gradually start being more and more offensive. So you should learn how to escape mount really well and also have really good hip escapes.
