If you want a good compound for rectus femoris - do hanging leg raises and hit both rectus femoris and abs WHILE training your grip.

Is there a wrong way to do these? I never know how far down to drop, or how far forward my foot should be. Everyone's got opinions.
The further away your foot is, the more glute dominant it becomes. If you keep the foot close your quads will do most of the work.
I place my foot far away and it still slaughters my quads as well my glutes. I go down to around parallell
