So is the mirror lying to me? Do I have a shit physique until it looks good in a picture?

      What focal length is reality

        yes, tiny cameras do that

that which matches the mirror I would imagine

I think it depends on how far apart your eyes are. So looks literally are different depending on who is looking at you.

its a trick question because there are many variables that go into it, the answer is technically ~20mm but in reality because of the variables i wont list, ~50mm focal length is closest perspective to how you see others.

yea, incel was harsh but he looks a lot better on the right
doesnt IST have a photography board - they would probably know which is the best focal length for portraits

No, it's normal to feel like that, especially with selfies. We find things we're not used to inherently less attractive, so when you mirror the image so it reflects reality, it ALWAYS looks uglier. But you look the same. You are seeing how others have always seen you.

Its the camera anon, its why BBers always get a DSLR for taking pictures with lightboxes and ring lights.
    >Face photos should be a 50mm prime since its for portraits
I recommend an 70mm-200mm f2.8 lens for fitness photography, ideally with a fast shutter speed and ISO increased manually for low light photography so you can get that top down lighting with good contrast on the shadows.
Since its a zoom lens you can use it in a variety of situations where a prime lens would be a pain in the ass too

      I got a tripod, a remote shutter & scrcpy
mirroring my phone on the computer to make sure lighting & poses were decent
I do think getting a used dslr might be next

What's a good beginner light setup? I'm completely fricking new and moronic when it comes to this...

        >lighting
What I did was take pics like b***hes do - a million - and check them out after wards
i'm switching between a standing lamp and it's second brighter head
that schizo roider had a lil gif with tips like a pump, oil, overhead lighting

make a friend stand before mirror. he looks the same. therefore you look closer to the mirror than the photo. some people arent photogenic at all & the lense on the camera+lighting really matters a lot.

youre welcome for solving your insecurity

I get photogenicity, yet I don't "get" it. It's like some comedian said "I'm not ugly, I'm just not photogenic. It isn't me that's ugly, only any exact, perfect replica of my face that is ugly."
      Yes, I am unphotogenic.

Photos are not exact perfect replicas. The human eye and a photographic lens process light in completely different ways. This is kind of why photography is an art that you can't just stumble into.

    >in my black monitor with low lighting and plenty of shadow i look like the hulk
    >in front of the gym mirror with grungy lighting i look like a muscular guy with a beer belly
    >in the bathroom with harsh lighting i look like a fat balding baby with a neckbeard
    >in photos i either look like a chubby awkward teenager or an 8 foot tall troll who can rip a man in half like a phone book
    >in the changing room mirror i look like a pregnant woman
i feel like god is playing with me
