Bodybuilding = waste of time

Look at that fricking muscle mass that serves no purpose. In order to achieve such results you must:
-work out twice a day
-work out like 5 days a week
-spend a fortune on food, supplements and steroids

this means your whole week is basically filled with gym exercise, driving there and back, cooking a lot of meals. Just how much fricking time is that in your life? This means you will not have time for anything else in life. You can live like that only if you make money based on it, but not when you have a productive job.

Also, in order to look like that you must do exercises that isolate particular muscles, which means doing motions that are incompatible with practical biomechanics and complex motions of human body. This means that you are not efficiently exercising in order to strengthen your body, but only that your physical fitness is only a side effect of motions that are otherwise useless in practical life, so there is no time efficiency to it.

Why is fitness industry not warning ordinary people about that?

You only have to achieve it once. Maintenence is easy. I do some medium workouts 2x a week. Still ~200lbs, still ~15% bodyfat. Have been for 12 years now.

Bodybuild til mid 30s, then go functional.

Yeah this is why i am not into gymmaxxing grind. Since a lot of the muscles in human body have no practical use even for those who have physically demanding jobs/lifestyles, you have to spend a lot of your free time isolating them and working on them plus following stupid diets and if you ever take a break you start losing them very quickly.

All your muscles have the practical use of keeping your body mobile, your joins strong, and your posture upright. Weak muscles combined with the modern seated/phone staring lifestyle eventually lead to issues like scoliosis, slipped discs, constant spraining of lower back, chronic knee and neck pain, etc.
You don't need to isolate specific muscles or lift heavy to stay healthy, just keep moving, exert yourself, work up a sweat and high heartrate when exercising. Most importantly, always do things that involve using your legs and core.

I am planning to return to the gym but on a relaxed basis - maybe 2 times a week just to do a few compound exercises like benchpress, deadlift, and dumbbell curl

Bodybuilding is for the male gaze, sports training is for the female gaze. You also waste a shit ton of time in the gym doing bullshit 10x10 routines that just make you look bloated. You only need to do 3x5.

sports is actually the best way to exercise because at least you're doing something productive and socializing and working towards beating your enemy. unlike a gymcel who sits alone in the gym basement exerting all that energy for no reason

Wrong, literally just spend 10-20k per month on primo steroids (the vast mahority of the cost is in drugs for preventing side effects eg gyno, baldness, organ damage, test supression etc) made in russia by top minds and work out twice a day for 6 months and you will be 50% of the way to looking like john cena

      Anonymous

The steroids are cheaper than the food unless you're Cena. All of the cost of the gear comes from human growth hormones, which normal gym lifters should not mess with.

      A year's worth of test is $150, max. And that's post-covid pricing.

Test is a steroid but the really massive guys take way more then that. Stacks with 3-4 different compounds are the norm at highest level. Not many do this without making money of it or competing though.

You sound mad, you're having a hard time getting out of bed in the morning? Stop being fat. Women evolutionarily like able men, not necessarily body builders. Fitness ( physically) is however the best and closest indicator to being more functionally able to do physical tasks.

Bodybuilding is an art. A perpetual sculpture. A person using their body as the stone to create something. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes horrifying. But in the end it’s purpose is not the same as strength or athletic training, even if they share the same space and equipment.

I am being truthful and honest here. Only a chimpanzee needs large bicepts and shoulders. This also usually coincides with the typical "dad-body", a c-shaped spine, and lower back pain. You cannot have this and also a robust upright posture. What else did you think you would do with those big arms? Beat your chest and bounce around?

I don't really have a dog in this fight, but recently I was having a drink and chatting with a female bartender who is also a semi-pro bodybuilder.

She was telling me about the trips to various bodybuilding competitions and conventions that she and her boyfriend regularly take. He's apparently also a semi-pro bodybuilder, though I picked up that he may be a little farther up the ranks than she is.

One of the things she told me is that he couldn't sit in a chair for longer than an hour or so without HAVING to get up to avoid severe pain. That's when I had the small insight that (at least his style of) bodybuilding is more like "making a Bonsai of yourself" than it is like anything resembling plain old "physical fitness".
