Great thread. Calisthenics is the best workout if you’re like me. I weigh 220 at 5’10”. Big wide guy, about 20-something % body fat. It’s hard as frick if you’re not lanky.

        Correct post
Yeah calisthenics is meme tier useless shit if you stay tiny on purpose to make it easy, but if you’re a big guy it’s very effective. I mostly just do bodyweight + kettlebell. Occasionally go to the gym just to bench and deadlift for fun but it’s not really a part of my routine. Just a way to spend an afternoon here and there

the purpose of staying lean is to do harder progressions you fat moron
a 150lbs guy doing one arm chinups is stronger than a 280lbs guy doing regular ones

who cares about being "strong" if you look like op pic? its the exact same as being a fat frick bragging about a heavy squat. aesthetics > all

only obese homosexuals want to look like OP pic,, skeletons and any average homosexual strive for a muscular build

                Anonymous

Yeah that’s my point. Calisthenics works to get jacked if you do everything else a bodybuilder does [ie eat enough, eat more protein, take rest days as needed, etc]. If you intentionally stay small as possible [like OP pic does] in order to be able to progress easier to do fancy shit like one arm chinups, then calisthenics won’t work for getting a good physique, because your goal isn’t a good physique, your goal is doing one arm chinups.
It’s just like powerlifters. Most powerlifters have shitty physiques because they eat too much goddamn food so can squat more weight. Most calisthenics bros have shitty physiques because they don’t eat enough goddamn food so they can do cool moves. It’s the exact same problem just reversed. Absolutely no bodybuilder trains 1 armed chinups, but they ALL train chinups.

social media has corrupted your notion of a “good physique”. most high level calisthenics athletes/gymnasts are shredded muscular and look great to 99% of the population. there is barely a single image of someone doing a front lever (one of the >easiest serious calisthenics moves) on google images who doesnt have either a muscular or totally shredded back. some of these calisthenics moves you physically cannot perform unless you have the required muscle

you can get creative even with calisthenics. Such as filling a backpack with books and doing weighted pullups/chinups.

it is much more limiting to do weights than to do calisthenics.

Calisthenics alone (as in just doing pushups) will take you to beyond elite levels of strength, given that you need a weight of 30% of your 1 rm to grow muscle, at least for your upper body.

For your lower body, you need about $100 (50-60 lbs) worth of dumbbells to add enough weight to take yourself to elite levels of lower body strength.

If you cannot do this for any reason, it is likely you are lacking conditioning which over time will improve, but it will stall your lifts until you improve it, but the caveat is that you are building yourself completely, not just focusing on one thing.

        > For your lower body, you need about $100 (50-60 lbs) worth of dumbbells to add enough weight to take yourself to elite levels of lower body strength.

You're not gonna reach elite levels of lower body strength with that

          Anonymous

          Yes you will

in doing a quick calculation. At 140 lbs the elite standard is 373 lbs, so with your own weight you're at 513 this is with both legs and doing a squat.

If you have 60 lbs worth of dumbbells and your 140 lb body, with one leg you are at 200 lbs vs ~256.5 lbs each with the squat.

Now that's a good way to really maximize the weight, but even with using both legs you are far above the 30% threshold for what has been shown in studies to promote muscular growth. You could really do it with less but 2 30 lb dumbbells are useful for a ton of lifts like curls and ohp as well.

You do realize that "elite squat standards" don't include bodyweight, right?

no, Tyson really is a genetic freak, pic related is him at 13 years old, people at the top of their sport are usually a combination of being a top .0001% genetic freak and hardwork, and also gear.

Honestly, for a lot of people it is. Most people aren't going that deep into how they look or really dialing in their diet. But bodyweight stuff is virtually free, can be done anywhere and is a reasonable way to stay healthy. Sure you won't be super strong unless you really do some crazy volume and harder moves. But basically everyone who's currently doing nothing would benefit from doing something.

The world would be a better place if everyone could do a dozen pushups.
