Bouldering and Weighlifting

Is it possible to weightlift 3-4 times week whilst bouldering recreationally? The bouldering community seems pretty adamant that you cant, but Id like to try because it seems like an enjoyable experience and is probably the only fitness hobby that isnt a sausagefest and is full of qts. But I dont wanna lose my gains.

I think it depends on the type of bouldering you do and how you combine it with upper body. It's almost exclusively pulling so if you do it on a pull day it should be fine. Alternatively you could work on something like slab if you're recovering.

i dont do pulling/pushing day. I just do Upper body/lower body days. I mix up pulling and pushing upper body exercises in my upperbody days, with some variations

If you toss bouldering in with no consideration for the extra load on the upper body you'll probably not be able to recover properly. At the end of the day it's up to you to determine if you're able to recover, but I'd suggest combining climbing with the upper body days and doing the lifting afterwards. There are a lot of people that I see doing that since each bouldering gym has a regular smaller gym inside it.

seems like good advice. Ill definately go a few pounds lighter during bouldering days. No lifting to exhaustion either.

So anon, you seem familiar with bouldering. If I maintain my moderate weight liftimg workload that entails strength training with some aesthetics goals, what would be my bouldering ceiling? Upper Intermediate or lower Intermediate? Has there ever been a weightlifteer who done advanced climbs? Seems like to a certain point, muscle weight and inflexibility becomes a liability as you progress.

            >Seems like to a certain point, muscle weight and inflexibility becomes a liability as you progress.

That is true. If your goal is to be a professional climber, you have to look like pic related. Sorry. If you are a hobbyist climber, you can have all the hypertrophy you want (naturally) and still mog most hobbyist climbers. If I had to guess, I'd say V7/V8 is where your gains would start to hinder you. So the ceiling would be expert.

It's also worth noting that a lot of weightlifting skills transfer well to climbing. Weightlifters walk in with their gains and suck for like 1 day, then pick up climbing very quickly. This will make the limp-wristed ꜱoybeans that populate climbing gyms seethe. Fun stuff.

I've noticed certain problems give me way more trouble than my friends (am 5'9 175lbs) but I've never seen a guy heavier than me send anything I can't send myself. Luv me dynos because they're all really just a function of courage

It turns out, weightlifters that do climbing on the side are kind of rare. I'm 5'11" 175 and do V5s. There is a guy at my gym with a huge upper body who mogs everyone on the climbing wall too, so I know it can be done.

lol, yeh. 2 weeks ago was my first session, and my cousin who is my bouldering partner said he couldnt even do the climbs I did within the first few months. Its still annoying how anti-weightlifting the bouldering community is, but Ill keep at it at both sports. Im not here to win a bouldering championship, just to have fun and hopefully get to know a few fitness girls.

I'm not an expert, but I'd think you should do it on the same day as climbing. If you're more interested in climbing well, I'd do the pulling exercises after you're done climbing.

I try to climb on chest day and rest day. Even in bouldering, you're limited by your forearms, not your back so it doesn't really matter. I've done entire back workouts after an hour of climbing and hit PRs even. Turns out climbing isn't a big workout for anything but forearms.

          Anonymous

how long have you been climbing? it kinda sounds like you have poor technique if it only feels like you’re working forearms. your legs and core should be getting their share as well.

I've found that pulling and bouldering within the same 24 hours doesn't impact strength but does slightly increase the risk of injury for whichever one you do second. But I've been able to boulder at night and then come back to PR on deadlifts or pullups the following morning.

Imo most people chalk up to overtraining what can easily be cured by eating more protein or getting a full night's sleep, or is just residual soreness from a new movement. If you notice you plateaued on one or the other after increasing your exercise, and your diet/sleep is fine, then consider dialing it back, but otherwise you can probably do it indefinitely.

I do PPL 6 days a week and boulder 2-3 times a week. Lifting in the mornings, bouldering in the evenings. Hasn't impeded my gains on either although I'm a noob at bouldering, v4 level on a good day.

Be careful when you're starting out. Your tendons don't recover as quickly as your muscles do. It's very easy to get tendinitis.

Yes it is but you have to sacrifice some volume and intensity.
Just do 1 or 2 sets less per exercise and save 2-3 reps per set or you can use a weight that you can rep out for 2 more reps over your current sets but stick with the same reps, for example if you do 5 sets of 5, do 4 sets of 5 with weights that you can do 6-7 reps.
Same on the bouldering don't go too hard and you'll be fine.
You can do 1 hard session per week for each resulting in 2 hard sessions and the rest of the days you train do a session of moderate intensity.

I work at a rock wall and I lift 4 days per week upper/lower and I climb 5.12s.

This of course means nothing to all of you because I am a woman and even though I have been lifting for 3 years I barely hit 1/2/3/4.

Unfortunately I am in burgerland. I have only hit a 1rm of 405. I also barely got to 3pl8 squat and can only do it on good days. I work really hard for it but god damn being a woman is rough. My muscles are so small compared to men who do the exact same program I do.

I don't think I've seen a woman squat over 300 in recent memory. I've seen the occasional one go over 200 and that was my main motivation to get on the right side of 3 plates back when I was at that threshold.

But in my bouldering gym it's hard to find a man that squats 3 either. I was trying to get my gf up to 1/2/3/4 but she left me (and the gym) before I could finish the job.

I only did it once and could probably only pull it off after resting and eating a bunch. It's almost not worth it as a woman. It feels painful and I like the way I look without being overly muscular. Sorry about your gf fren. I'd love to have a lifting buddy (female) to go to the gym with. I never see any women that look serious and I'm disgusted when women wear spandex and bras to the gym so it's hard for me to make friends.

I'm 5'10 and a few of my relatives were incredibly athletic, almost Olympian level. I do not think your average fat Amerilard can pull off what I have. I also worked very hard towards this and catered my diet perfectly. It is possible.

However I guess the blood line ends with me because I have yellow fever something terrible. I don't know how to get rid of it either. I'm almost 24 and scared to settle down because I know it'll be with half white kids. Sigh. Pic related my ideal relationship.

Grow a pair of ovaries and break the fricking addiction. I did it, and now I have an unironic white tradfu instead of a asiatic wife. I wouldn't ever date a jap they're fricked in the head and gross looking. I'd rather be caught dead than date a Japanese man. I already speak some Korean and I'd be happy to learn Chinese for a Chinese guy. Your wife is miserable btw and I hope she cleans you in divorce court when you inevitably cheat on her. I had a Korean bf once but we broke up because I kept calling him a filthy chink in bed, not really my problem. You're kind of despicable and I somewhat want to go find an Asian bf right now just to walk around in public and watch men like you internally seethe over it. Gross ass. Pic related is my future and I'd rather have it over dating a white man I cannot get wet for.

As for posting my body, seethe more. The idea of a white guy cumming to me makes me want to puke.

Its more than possible anon I used to climb 3-4 hours a day (skip sunday because they closed early) and work out for an hour directly after, several people in the gym did this daily, a lot of them were highschool kids and early 20s ppl. Did I lose an insane amount of weight doing this? Absolutely. Infact the only reason I was able to do this was because I didnt care at all about gaining weight, I was 147lbs at 6'2 absolutely shredded, but I was also 21-22 years old and barely needed sleep or food to function. Its cool though youll get really strong if you eat properly, I think the only reason I did this was because there was an asian spa Id get a happy ending at everyday after going there, I was straight addicted. Anyway goodluck

It's all diet. Bouldering provides a sufficient pull workout. But you need to make sure to balance it with a push day.

I find it difficult to workout after a long session but I tend to run 4-5 hour sessions either gym/outdoor and my muscles ache the next day. But you should treat it like HIIT. If you're not on a cut, you'll definitely need to eat more than you think to maintain bodyweight. If you're climbing consistently (10 minute breaks + climbing difficult routes) you can burn a SHITLOAD of calories an hour doing it. This is why a lot of climbers are lanky as frick. Just eat more.

I'm a DYEL so take this for what it is but over the summer I'm experimenting with pull/push where I first do bouldering and then deadlifts/rows, pullups and curls on pull days and squats, bench and DB OHP on push days. I'm only a week in so I don't have any other results than that my tendons are fine, I hate myself for being weak, and I have talked to one bouldering grill thus far. I'm going again today.

The climbing community is full of homosexual DYEL hippies who desperately try to gatekeep everything.
Its an elitist community, so they're obviously gonna talk shit about lifting, ignore them. Its not so intense that its going to frick you up, I used to boulder on rest days all the time.

If you wanted to focus entirely on climbing, then yes you may have to take your lifting schedule into consideration, but if you're just going for fun, dont over think it.
