The other day I was peer-pressured into trying the 95lb log bar with 20 or 30 lbs of wait on it. I got 5 reps on the first try.

You should do it with both arms.

          I’m

I remember I worked very hard to get to 1pl8 and cried tears of joy the first time I put it up for one. 6 months later, this weekend, I did it for 5x5. Keep at it bro, it will come more quickly than you’ll realize. You’re gonna make it.

I started my first gym membership in September and my first max was 115. I hit 135 middle of October. Full disclosure I had been doing 10x10 dumbbell pressing at home from May to September, got up to 35s I think. But when I started in the gym I focused every Saturday on pressing, and worked to improve my 1 rep max every time for the first couple months. My sets would go like this
          60% 1x8
          70% 1x5
          80% 1x3
          90% 1x3
          95% 1x1
          1rm 1x1
105% attempt for a new max
          Then I would do a 5x5 at 90% of my 1rm.
That would be my entire Saturday workout for the first few months. Wednesdays I would do 8x8s of OHP at about 60-65% of my 1rm from the weekend.

Smaller jumps for OHP. Do you have plates smaller than 5lbs?

OHP 225+ with good form is more impressive than doing a 405lb BP. I rarely ever see people do a decent OHP.

        Anonymous

I think a 225 strict press is closer to a 365 bench, but it is probably more impressive to most people since you don’t see it nearly as often. But that’s just because people don’t do heavy shoulder training because they’re moronic

Truly, overhead pressing is The Great Filter.

Weak beginners won't do it, or will do it with dumbbells. The beginners who think they are strong won't do it, because they only care about squat/bench/deadlift. "Aesthetics" lifters will ignore it because it isn't easy or a machine. Bloaters won't do it because it doesn't scale as well with bodyweight.

Only those who really want it, and want it just to have it, are going to have a nice The Press.

      nice.
arms/shoulder movement looks good and your setup is good.
You could lift more if you focus on stabilising your legs and hips, squeeze glutes and hips locked forward while externally rotating your hips. Similar to the top of a deadlift.

For an absolute beginner what is the best way to program for the OHP? I've been following starting strength but I want to prioritise the overhead press.

    My currents stats are

    96.5kg / 212lbs
    28 years old

    1 rep maxes

    OHP - 45kg
