Bulking is a stupid term as it is used for both small calorie surpluses and large ones when it should only mean large surpluses.

No one should “bulk”, you should eat maybe 100-200 calories over maintenance only on the days you also lift, and take one week a month or every 2 months to fast/cut the small fat you gain doing that. The goal should be getting a hot body that girls mire, not a “body builder who does shows” (ie power fatty, which most men only get memed into because they’re scared to say they got to the gym to look hot and thus make it about ‘strength’)

Bulk means to eat massive amounts. “Lean bulk” is an oxymoron then. What happens is idiots or new people dirty bulk not realizing that it’s stupid because everyone talks about needing to bulk when they mean just eat a little more

Bulking literally just means eating above maintainence. You can't save the genuinely stupid but I see almost anyone who actually lifts advocating for stuffing your face to bulk. It's nearly universal at this point to recommend eating only a little above maintainence to bulk because so many people have already tried to bulk like crazy and will actively tell others not to do it. The only exception you could possibly use are strength athletes who are trying to get huge numbers and they don't give a frick about how they look anyways

I blame Sam Sulek for doing a "winter bulk" with a video for it every single day. Like over 100 videos of "bulk day". Zoomers see that shit and think they need to eat 5000 calories a day and they'll look like him. He conveniently leaves all the steroids out of his bulking video, which is where most of the bulking comes from.

It got trickier once I stopped eating goyslop. I was raised on candy, soda, and pastries so those habits were ingrained in my head even though you wouldn't even know it by looking at me. It's a lot easier now that I've incorporated Vince Gironda shakes daily. It basically makes up for the 1800 calorie gap and I tolerate it pretty well.

Sorry to hear that mate, stick at it, all the best.

Thanks, fren. I'll probably never be jacked, but I'm in much better shape than others in my situation. Hell, last year I didn't spend a single day in the hospital. That hasn't happened since I was like 3 years old.

Ouch. Crohns is a brutal disease, my uncle had like ten feet of intestine removed

Fortunately no resectioning for me. But I did have a wicked hernia after some blockage surgeries.

Get some meds for that. Seriously. You don't wanna lose your guts. And try to stick to readily digestible stuff, unironically broth and gelatin will be easier to take in than a lot of other things. Even powder if you have to.

They're worried to put me on a biologic for the Crohn's because my immune system is already fricked from the CF. But the CF is now really well managed due to the new drugs on the market, and that seems to have indirectly helped the Crohn's inflammation (I guess, haven't had a bad flare up in 2 years).

by stepping on the scale. you are making it seem way harder than it actually is. its all about weekly and monthly averages. you are right that calculating every single day within a 100 calorie accuracy is difficult but luckily you dont need to do that. you just need to look at the scale and mirror and make sure you are not getting fat. it doesnt matter if some day you went on a 400kcal surlplus and some day you went on a 300 deficit, etc. its all about averaging that 100-200 calorie over maintenance. and once you have been doing this long enough its pretty easy to do. i can keep my weight at the exact same number lets say 80kg for 6 months straight. so im eating at LITERALLY ZERO calories above maintenance or under. How do I do that? Its 100-200x more accurate than a 100-200 calorie range. You just do it its that simple?

All you morons need to stop overthinking this.

In most countries food manufacturers can have a 20% margin of error when writing how many calories a product contains. Searching how many calories a natural food has is also very inaccurate. It is literally impossible to eat 100-200 calories over maintenace, since you can't measure calories that accurately even if you weigh everything you eat and calculate how many calories it has to the gram.

      >It is literally impossible to eat 100-200 calories
If you keep all your numbers the same and claim them as true, you are basically normalizing your numbers even if they are off. So as long as you are using the measurements all from a single source, how would it be so difficult to measure this?

The point of bulking is to minimize catabolism due to the body pulling from energy reserves (fat). If you eat a lot of small meals and don't spike your blood sugar, you can eat a small surplus (~500kcal max) while minimizing catabolic reactions. Big bulks only happen due to laziness or poor planning. There's a reason bodybuilders are autistic about meal timing; bad timing means undue losses and wasted time.
    >pro tip: carb loading preworkout and before sleep shrinks the loss window around breakfast and post workout

What do you suggest for carb loading?

        Anonymous

Preworkout? Probably something light but sugary with a bit of protein - peanut butter powder and banana smoothie works nicely. Technically works halfway decently as a postworkout snack too, but not ideal.
Dinner and dessert / pre-sleep? Good old chicken and rice with some salad and fruit, probably. Need some shit to keep you held over for the night. If your blood sugar peters out, your body will start pulling from fat and liver reserves. If I recall correctly, that's one step in a catabolic cascade, which you're dodging on a bulk.
Also, pineapple and papaya are great for protein digestion. Paired with yogurt or cottage cheese and some nuts, and you've got some easily absorbed protein with a side of micros.
(I've been working on this for myself for some time now, so it's fresh on my mind lol)

          Anonymous

Side note: if you can pair plants with dairy, you can avoid the issues with mineral absorption somewhat. Oxalate binds to calcium, which competes with magnesium for uptake. If you're eating a lot of milk and dairy products, this can offset some of the negative side effects of the imbalance while also helping with micros.

Bulking in the last 20-30 years has mostly been taught with diminishing surpluses. As in your first bulk is calorically the biggest and longest with each subsequent one being less by year 3 or 4 it's no more than 100-200. If you people ever bothered to read any of the material out there for lifting instead of just building your routines and diets from YouTube and a tnation articles you'd have know this.
