Have you ever heard the expression "the dose makes the poison"?
Let's figure out what human dose this cell culture study was working with.
    >cells exposed to 5 mM caffeine for 6 h
Caffeine has a molar weight of 194.19g/mol.
A large cup of coffee has ~100mg of caffeine, or 0.1g.
    0.095 g (1 mol / 194.19 g) = 0.000489 mol or 4.89 x 10-4 mol caffeine in one cup of coffee.
The present study bathed cells in 0.005 millimoles of caffeine for 6 hours.
In a lean adult of 70kg or so, 1 cup of coffee leads to a caffeine concentration of some 0.2mg/l.
    0.2mg/l is 0.00001 moles per litre, or 0.01 mM/L.
5mM for 6 hours vs 0.01mM for a few hours from drinking 1 cup of coffee.

      Anonymous

I appreciate the math but how many actual cups of coffee does that equate to in a 100kg human?

        Not him, but FRICKING BRAINLETS

1 cup of coffee = concentration of 0.01
Concentration necessary to inhibit protein synthesis = 5

Cups of coffee necessary to reach a concentration of 5 = 500 (five hundred)

Yeah, if you drink five hundred cups of coffee within a day, you'll kill your gains. Also, you'll have a nice day due to glutamatergic excitotoxicity, so the gains aren't even relevant.

Like I said it prevents sleep. Your brain makes new adenosine receptors to adapt to caffeine use. When you stop caffeine, the adenosine floods the receptors making you beyond tired and causing headaches via vasodilation. Also blocking adenosine causes hair loss and interferes with sleep cycles and normal heart rhythm, causing arrythmias and fatigue. 85% of Americans are drug addicts.

                >Digoxin (better known as Digitalis), sold under the brand name Lanoxin among others, is a medication used to treat various heart conditions.[4] Most frequently it is used for atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and heart failure.[4] Digoxin is one of the oldest medications used in the field of cardiology. It works by increasing myocardial contractility, increasing stroke volume and blood pressure, reducing heart rate, and somewhat extending the time frame of the contraction
                >The use of digoxin is limited because the drug has a narrow therapeutic index and requires close monitoring. Digoxin can cause many adverse events, is involved in multiple drug interactions, and can result in toxicity. Despite its limitations, however, digoxin has a place in therapy

I’m very familiar with the caffeine research and even gave it up for a few months and felt good. However, I just gotta have that early morning cuppa covfefe. Coffeemaker makes it at 6a, I run downstairs, make my cup, run back upstairs into my chilly bedroom and sip it under the covers curled up with my dog. It’s the highlight of my day.

I keep it to one cup a day. It’s still an addiction but I stay so disciplined in other areas that it feels ok to have this one.

Not to mention that when you ingest 100mg at 9 pm, you'll still have 25mg left in your system at 9 pm due to the 5-6 hour half life of caffeine, which causes worse sleep hygiene, which creates a dependence of caffeine. Not to mention that some people take 200mg worth of caffeine in their preworkout past noon. Yeah, good luck getting the benefits of a good nights sleep when you have to wake up at 6 the next day.
