My understanding is it's the nutrient density that went down. Like, a bigger plant from CO2 induced growth has similar levels of nutrition but spread out further across the plant.

The less nutritious yields comes from sustained monoculture buffed up by artificial fertilizers. The soils for farmlands suck right now which makes sense when you've only grown shit like wheat on the same plots for 6 decades.

Fruit juices are not good for you. You basically take a shit ton of fruits that you would normally not be able to eat becasue your stomach would fill up, and cram it into a glass that you can easily drink now. You also remove all the fiber, it is basically liquid sugar. Drinking your calories is the easiest way to overconsume and become a fatass.

          >You basically take a shit ton of fruits that you would normally not be able to eat becasue your stomach would fill up

So, I get more nutrients than I could by eating them? Sounds efficient.

          >You also remove all the fiber,

That's lucky, humans don't need that anyway as it causes IBS.

          >basically liquid sugar

Sounds ideal for an active lifestyle

            >So, I get more nutrients than I could by eating them? Sounds efficient.
They barely fricking contain any nutrients because they diminish when you process. Also the only useful nutrient that oranges contain is vitamin c, which is water soluble so you can't even use the extra because you just piss it out.
            >That's lucky, humans don't need that anyway as it causes IBS.
            No it doesn't moron
            >Sounds ideal for an active lifestyle
            moron
            >Yes, consuming calories is the easiest way to overconsume and become a fatass. Get your own fricking opinions.
You are not able to consume the same amount calories by only eating you mouthbreathing, intentionally misleading motherfricker. Liquid calories don't satiate and fill you up the same way that solid foods do. That is why they are easier to overconsume, because you physically can't eat the same amount in solids. If you can't differentiate between the two you are an idiot. Fruitjuices are empty calories and are only detrimental, the belief that they are healthy are the biggest fricking misconception about nutrition that ever was. It is basically equivalent to drinking fricking soda. You should never fricking drink your carbohydrates.
            >inb4 protein shakes
The whole fricking point of protein shakes is to get excess protein because it is borderline impossible physically eat that much to get the same amount. Also proteinshakes are not fricking sugar.

Carnivore is shitty for performance. You're gambling that high saturated fat and sodium is safe when it's in the context of a carnivore diet. You're gambling that you're getting an optimal level of micronutrients that are low in meat.

If you eat some organ meat every now and then you will get high levels of every nutrient, especially if you also eat seafood

except for fiber, which is an important component in keeping insulin levels low, which helps with reducing metabolic syndrome. Diets high in meat can also cause metabolic syndrome through dyslipidemia.

                Also true.

In fact, if you're reckless with organ meat you can very easily wind up in the hospital with hypervitaminosis. This usually happens if you take a supplement on top of a diet that contains regular consumption of liver.

It doesn't matter if you are getting dyslipidemia from meat consumption which is then leading to metabolic disease.

Insulin is a big one, but after that it's the lipids. Meat is high in atherogenic lipoproteins.

You satisfy both problems by eating lots of fiber, as fiber helps mitigate blood sugar spikes, which leads to insulin spikes, which leads to insulin resistance, and it also reduces the amount of cholesterol your body is taking in.

It goes back to the stereotypical diet of meat and potatoes, both need to be consumed for optimal health. Our bodies naturally evolved to consume both to mitigate the damage of consuming only one

                Anonymous

                >Meat is high in atherogenic lipoproteins
Where is your randomized control trial proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the lipoproteins contained in meat directly cause any harm to the arteries? I'll wait.
                >insulin spikes leads to insulin resistance
Not exactly. It has more to do with the onset of overall metabolic dysfunction from eating the liquid form of oxidative stress for the past 150 years. Before that diabetes almost did not exist.
Humans did not evolve to eat potatoes. Roots and tubers were always starvation prevention. Meat was always preferred. We aren't gorillas. We don't have the gut specialization to digest and ferment plant fiber into short chain fatty acids like they do. We have a gut well adapted to eating primarily meat.
The necessity of fiber is way overblown. Can you eat it and be fine? Most people can. Should you seek it out actively? Highly questionable.

You could make a very simple change and be better for it. It would take zero effort.
The spray stuff isn’t good and the oil in your salad probably isn’t either. If you want you can just rub a stick of butter on the pan or use a spray coconut/olive oil or something. For your salad if you’re going to use a plant oil just stick to olive oil.
The real secret is that seed oils are in nearly every single prepackaged food item on the store shelves. That’s what will really get you.
Seed oils oxidize at room temp into compounds that have been scientifically proven to induce oxidative stress in the human body. Something that can damage LDL particles, cause cancer and mitochondrial dysfunction which is a common trait in every modern chronic disease such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes, MS, you name it. Always mitochondrial dysfunction. There is a far more detailed rabbit hole you could dive down in order to understand this if you wish. Tucker Goodrich has collected a lot of data and studies about seed oils.

It is far less regulated than even olive oil which can be a shitshow. There was a study out of UC Davis where they took a random 12 avocado oil brands off the shelf and 10 of them (iirc) were cut with seed oils.
Chosen foods is the one I use because it was one of the brands they tested that was legit and even still I rarely use it.
Always better to go with animal fat if you can. Coconut oil is like second best. Olive oil and avocado oil - be careful.

                >Oh no my hecking nutrients

I think the real question is why are so many grown men nowadays absolutely obsessed with fad diets and shit? dieting obsessively has always generally been a female thing. men are now hyper obsessed with spending hours arguing over what diet is best, like keto of vegan. what makes particular men so obsessed? I am assuming they become obsessed because they are correcting a problem, whether it’s weight, feeling bad, etc? are men developing intolerances to food? becoming genetically weaker for some reason? what’s going on

        Anonymous

Wrong. A meme is a viral joke. Like pingas. No one person can make a meme. It takes a community.
You're some litle homosexual that started hearing normie using it wrong and now you think that's the actual definition when really what you're describing is just A FRICKING IMAGE. Not every image in existence is a meme. "Look a picture of a horse. If I write any random word over it it's now a meme. Lol look at this viral meme I made"

          Anonymous

            Anonymous

Allow me to tell you zoomers and normies how the word "meme" went from meaning, a specific kind of image, to any image.

First of all the image, or joke, has to be viral. As such it will probably be used in a variety of branching off ways. Like "guile's theme goes with everything" was a meme, being used in a variety of situations.

Courage wolf and foul bachelor frog were the first low effort "memes." They were viral and had many variations. But this format spiraled out of controlled and then you had "socially awkward penguin" and other knock offs. Eventually so many low effort, forced memes were made that normies started thinking "any image that has words on it, is a meme"

Now you have homosexuals that think any image in the world, viral or not, with words on it or not, is a meme, as long as it's intended to be humorous. It could be an image a 5 year old made and nobody could no about it except his grandma, and he would homosexualishly says "look granny, I made a meme." No it's not. It's not a viral concept being shared around in a community like long cat, or pedobear. It's just a random image you made in your basement and nobody knows about it. It's not a meme.

I personally agree to an extent. The issue is that language is evolving rapidly and we didn't bother to create new words for these new phenomenon we're experiencing day in and day out. "Meme" has evolved to mean any image created to amuse or spread an idea within a designated community, regardless of it's success.

Except meme is from The Selfish Gene which was published in, like, the 70s.

Not that I care that it was coopted by internet culture. The Selfish Gene, except for the stuff that's specific to the premise of the book, is a lot of horseshit. The invention of the "meme" and its popularisation is a normie mistake, the real meat of that book is looking at evolution from the perspective of the gene, rather than the organism that carries it.

It's true just not for reasons people tout. Increasing CO2 levels promotes very fast growth for plants. So comparing 1 1950s tomato to 1 currentyear tomato, I'd wager current year tomato has more nutrients, but only because it's going to be much bigger.

A comparison of 100g 1950s tomato to 100g currentyear tomato would obviously show the reverse. In any case, in any year, unless you lived next to the sea and ate lots of seafood, you'd want supplements for potassium, magnesium, iodine and so on... Cooking already damages most vitamins so you'd want supplements for those too.

There's this misconception that people were healthier in the early 20th century but that's not really true. Maybe, pre-industrial revolution, where the average peasant (outside of shit holes like medieval france or russia), would eat 4000+ calories a day due to manual labor they could get enough food in to cover nutrients. But you're average 1950s 9-5 pencil pusher got 50% of his calories from the flavorings in the cigarettes they smoked and rightly died on heart attacks in their 50s.

this peasant eating 4000 kilos myth is absurd. read ferdinand braudel. famines were a regular occurance all throughout europe through until the 19th century. peasants had to sell their wheat to market and survive off of inferior grains and meats. look at contemporary paintings of peasants, like from frans hals or brughel; they're toothless and ruddy looking people, not anywhere near the picture of health.

Imo, it's true that with gmos, artificial fertilizers, and overall the process of mass producing produce the overall nutritional quality is greatly lowered compared to the produce of a few generations back. When it comes to pills, the source is the most important part imo. If you buy whole food extract pills with enzymes or other plant compounds for improved digestibility, your probably getting nutrients from it. If you buy the cheapest gas station pills you are wasting your money and fricking up your health most likely.

Yes. Modern fruits & vegetables have been bred to grow bigger, while maintaining micronutrient content per unit mass was not a priority. Obviously.

Sure, homosexual. You can't exacly crop rotate the fruit trees, so they inevitably will create less and less of a value from the gradually depleted soil they have.
This is basic agriculture knowledge. Of course you need supplements if you live in an area that's poor in their natural form.

If the drops are consistently averaging around 20-30% then you would just need to eat 1.25-1.43 oranges. That 8 times figure is completely on its own compared to the entire paragraph before it.

none of those vitamins and minerals matters because there's food that's so high in them that with one serving you get a susbstantial amount of your daily value or you meet it entirely.

2 bites of a carrot will get you 100% dv of vit A, drinking some milk and eating some cheese will get you your calcium, eating a burger will get you your iron, eating some potatoes or bananas will cover potassium. Drinking 8 oz of orange juice or eating 1 orange will give you 100-200% dv of vit C.

Oranges are also very low in vit A, why the frick would you be eating an orange for vit A when you literally can take 2 bites of a carrot.

      Anonymous

      >Need to eat 8 bananas or 5 potatoes with skin to get the minimum of 2g potassium needed
Bad meme. Just use a salt substitute, they usually have the required ratio of sodium to potassium of 4:7 as well.

Also carrots have 0 vit A. Just b-carotene.

        Anonymous

you do realize that pretty much everything has potassium in it. If you eat a diet of whole foods, you are going to easily meet your potassium requirements each day. This means eating a banana or a serving of potatoes at least once.

Salt substitutes are not good for people not living in asia as you are removing the majority of iodine you get from your diet if you use a salt substitute.

Vitamin A alone can be very toxic to the body in high doses. Your body takes as much beta carotene as it needs to create vitamin A. It is quite clear how I explained this how beta carotene is far superior to vitamin A since there is almost no way for you to get a toxic amount of vitamin A from beta carotene as your body will just discard what it doesn't need. Some of the best supplements work in this way in that they do not provide the compound specifically, but they provide the building blocks for it.

I'm not sure it's quite that extreme, but, yes, nutritional value in fresh produce has been going down these past 50 years.

I'm fairly certain OP's epic maymay is cherry picking a timeframe to make the problem seem more extreme than it is; choosing to start from the 70s is odd, since this has been known about since the 1950s.

Reasons for this are not quite known, but it's thought to mostly be a combination of poor land management (mass production of cereal crops all year round instead of rotating a variety of crops to enrich the soil) and the fact that we started to allow produce to ripen on shelves.

      Anonymous

Another reason is that fertilizers are made to contain the micronutrients the specific plant needs to grow, not the ones we as consumers want it to absorb. People can't judge vitamin and mineral content in the store, so consumer choice can't fix this.

  24. 2 years ago

Meat still has every nutrient in high amounts. No plant has vitamin a, they only have beta caretine

Supplements are fake versions of the nutrients which your body can scarcely absorb

No one seems to understand this very simple concept that has been scientifically proven.
Everyone was always told to eat yer veggies so they MUST be healthy. Surely there's no other reason - like actually eating something and getting calories and not being hungry.
My favorite thing is how vegetable defenders love to talk about all these studies that claim health benefits of fruits and vegetables. Guess what? The benefit is the lardass study participant stopped eating goyslop and instead ate a real piece of food.

I dont know why a lot of you guys are absolutely wrong but it goes like this. Your average vegetable that you get in the store is pumped full with GMO's and such. The vegetables have been grown in order to have a higher yield ripen faster and be resistant to diseases. The problem with this is that the fruit or vegetable no longer has the required amount of energy to create and stock up on the nutrients that are normally found in said vegetables. A really good book about this is the Dorito affect and I recommend everyone hear reads it
