Maybe if you're untrained and overweight. It's good cardio though, I like doing pushups. I remember doing 200 5-pump burpees one day (that's a 1000 pushups, took me around 2 hours or less) and it felt great, however I could've done 5 sets of bench/OHP in a fraction of the time that took me to do those 1000 pushups and gotten a similar effect if not better, 20 mins at most.
If you have no equipment at home or are very adamant about not going to a gym then by all means go for a 500-1000 pushups routine if you're truly capable of it but keep your expectations within reason. At the very least you're gonna lose weight and get a bit of a tone.

Depends on how you define “big.” You can absolutely be strong and well defined (especially if you are low body fat), but you simply need weights to get “big” like I think you mean.
