Barbell bench is a bigger compound movement than dips

What muscles do you think bench works that dips don't?

                >muscles are either on or off
Dips and bench focus on different muscles to different amounts. A dip is never going to stress your pecs to the same degree as a bench press when trained at the same intensity.

    No.

Dips are mainly for your Triceps, not your chest.

They can replace flat bench and decline bench. There is no replacement for incline bench except shoulder pressing with a big arch maybe, but that's the same thing. Also cables can hit any part of the chest.

You're not doing them to depth then.

Nah, reverse grip bench press is incredibly underrated and much better than incline. It hits the same area of your chest while using different muscles in your arms from regular setup for bench so its encouraging more gains. It is also so much less prone to injury.

How the frick do you unravel that shit?

          Anonymous

Yea, it's also impossible to do without a training partner. If you unrack normally and then switch your grip off your chest you're going to lose your tight setup in your upper back

It has a huge carryover to bp and if you do combat sports it doesn't frick up your kinetic chain like benchpress does
Everyone who claims otherwise is wrong and a moron.

Yes and it should. Bench press was only ever a mid exercise in the first place.

One of the most underrated strong lifts. If you can do this well you will get huge triceps. Nothing tops this for triceps. Don't replace your bench with this though.

It's the upper body squat. Amazing exercise that hits all the best show muscles. But as the only exercise for chest development?
    NO.

Pec deck and bench press (barbell, dumbbell, machine, doesn't really matter) are the way to go for that.

IMO yes, saw way better growth from dips than on bench. And I progressed well on both lifts. 275 bench at 170, 170 dip at 170. Dips grew my chest and triceps way more, got a much deeper stretch on my chest, added bonus is the yolk and upper back gains. In more recent years, Id say the weighted pushup is supreme if you can get a good way to load it.

Nothing pumps my chest more than dips. I get a better pump off of dips than even pec flys so it is unique for every individual.

I was always the same way... I think its becuase our pec fibers run vertical. Been making massive gains while doing decline pullovers. My guess is they would probably work for you to

Dips hit your tris way more, move your body through a space (always better for muscle growth) and give an amazing stretch on delts and pecs just like a dumbbell press, except you can do higher weight with dips. Anyone with a good physique does them, it's just that only some train with low reps. Don't underestimate the mighty dip.

i'm extremely strong on dips compared to any other chest exercise, why is that? and yes i do go all the way down and all the way up, for example i can dip 2 plate for 8 reps at 145 lbs but only bench 185lbs for 10

      Anonymous

I'm like this, I'm a fricking monkey for dips - I dip like I wish I could do chin-ups. I think it's just the fact that I've been doing dips in one form or another pretty much all my life, and it's baked in at this stage. Even after I go through periods of not working out, I'll throw a plate on the belt and rep 'em out no worries.

      >2pl8 dips is extremely strong

Mass moves mass and you don't weigh much. Plus you probably don't focus on bench as much as you should.

I'm growing in my 5 - 7 reps on dip weight. I feel like lowering the weight a good bit (90lb to 50lb) to just get more volume.

3x5-7 with 90lbs followed by 3x8-10 with 50lbs. Thank me for the pump, then hate me the day after for the DOMS.

Bench press really is based, you should just be doing a ton of flyes to accompany them. Pec isolations are a must regardless of your pressing movement

I dunno never done weighted sips but I used to do normal dips a lot *(while fat) and would max out the lat pushdown machine and within a week of bench pressing I was doing like 265. Could have pushed farther but got busy applying to grad school and let the gym slip by the wayside.

I do weighted ring dips, bulgarian dips and chest flyes on the rings 'cause I don't have a bench, how much carryover do theses exercises have to the bench press?

  25. 2 years ago

Don't do dips. Is very bad for your shoulders and collaebone.

  26. 2 years ago

Bench press is nearly useless when it comes to functional strength, and just creates imbalance in the shoulder/chest area. 80s popular culture with the exaggerated man-breasts physique just forced it among the actual kings of compound lifts: Squat, Deadlift, and OHP. Ditch the psyops, do dips
