Can you learn martial arts without sparring?

Now don't get me wrong I do want to spar but recently I had a surgery I have to have bars inside my body for three years and the doctors say that contact sports are absolutely out of disucssion...

Can I actually learn martial arts without doing sparring or is it completely pointless?

You can learn the techniques but if you actually got into a fight you would panic and forget everything you learned because you don't have adrenaline control.

pretty pointless I'd say, which martial art do you mean? There are a lot of them

No, you need sparring to learn things like timing, judgement, how long your arms are. Being stronger and fitter helps too, you can win fights against someone weaker than you just by grabbing them and punching them. Or if you are taller than them you can stiff arm them and avoid wrestling.

      >if you are taller than them you can stiff arm them and avoid wrestling
do you really think this works against people who know how to fight?

It does, and if you were actually into martial arts, you will see fighters do it all the time.

Of course it does. You see taller heavyweights do it all of the time. Klitchko was infamous for doing it. Roy jones jr did it too.

Hearns would do it as well

          ?t=9

Its a pretty good technique for controlling a shorter pressure fighter.

that's boxing, not grappling or mma. you're not going to be able to use a stiff arm to "avoid wrestling"

you have no idea what you're talking about. Also there are many reasons you do it. You can do it to control opponent's distance, set up shots, block your opponents view.

                Also jon jones doing it

                ?t=303

funny how its all of these TALLER and RANGIER fighters doing it like the original anon mentioned as a technique for distance control.

                >b-but distance control has nothing to do with whether someone can take you down
                lmao!

The point is, dear autist, that yes it works when jon jones does it, it's not going to work when OP's crippled untrained ass tries it against someone that knows how to fight

                >look here is jon jones doing it
                >y-yeah thats just because its jon jones though

How many concessions are you going to have to make here. It is a technique that is used to control distance, nothing more. Sometimes it is used to help stop takedowns, sometimes it is used for other reasons. Jesus what is so hard to understand here? I have provided multiple videos proving that it works. I have done the techique myself in sparring. Why are you getting your ego involved in such a trivial point lol?

                >Conor Mcgregor did it all of the time lol
The first time conor faced a good wrestler he got fucked up, and he trained for years preparing for that fight
                >you have no idea what you're talking about
You are the one who dont
                >You can do it to control opponent's distance, set up shots, block your opponents view.
Not to avoid takedowns, if you think keeping your arm away like that has a big impact you should try going to a martial arts gym

You mean Diaz or Khabib? Because neither are just 'good wrestlers' they are also top tier strikers and all round great fighters. Khabib was beating conor standing up. He didnt even need to wrestle to win the fight. I posted a video where Jones literally stiff arms his opponent and uses the distance created to avoid being taken down.

Maybe it will, maybe it wont, how the fuck am i supposed to know if a random anon will be able to use it effectively or not. All i know is that it is a viable technique to create distance. You seem to understand that but your brain doesnt seem to be able to connect that creating distance is a good technique to avoid getting taken down.

                >You mean Diaz or Khabib? Because neither are just 'good wrestlers' they are also top tier strikers and all round great fighters. Khabib was beating conor standing up.
I will stop arguing with you because you clearly don't know what you are talking about
Go to the conor khabib fight right now and look at the first shot khabib takes at his legs and tell me
How tf does a straight arm stop that you moron
Anti wrestling is wrestling, and i say that as a brazilian who hates wrestlers more than anything else

heres the problem. I never said that the techique can stop any takedown at all times and is 100% effective. Especially against someone who is literally one of the best wrestlers in the ufc ever. You seem to presume that i did though. Its like me showing you a video of a guy getting knocked out with an overhand right and saying
                >yeah bro how would him checking a kick stop that LMAO
its all situational you understand? Are you really so retarded and lacking in nuance that yuo dont understand that?

Its wrong specially when you say "and avoid wrestling" how are you going to avoid wrestling when it depends on your opponent? Have you ever trained or fought? When someone shoots a double leg you have to adress it and its not that arm that will do it

    In terms of boxing,
You can punch a bag, shadow box and improve your punching form as well as learn certain basics such as blocking/countering etc. This will of course give you a way better base than someone who has zero training when you get the bars removed.

But you will never be able to tie them together without ring time and there are certain skills that you can only learn via sparring. You cant drill positioning, cutting off the ring, inside fighting, pressure, distance, pace, learning to release your scapula and loosen up as well a lot of the mental side od things without sparring. Ring time is king.

IMO you're better off focusing on something else. Knowing how to fight really is a near-useless skill. Also cant you do a non-impact martial art like BJJ until you get your bars out? If not then i'd say focus on weightlifting and looking better or some form of cardio/conditioning instead.

Maybe go to classes and do the above stuff still but it shouldnt be your focus if you cant spar.

It depends on the martial art.
Some forms (such as Karate) use katas as part of training. It's almost closer to a dance than an actual fight, but you will learn the fundamental movements that way.
Plus they can be meditative if you're into that

Yes, just get into gay frolic spors like wrestling or BJJ. 90% of sparring is dudes smelling each other's nutsacks while gently caressing

The people here that give you advice probably don't even train.
Yes you can beat up most guys that don't train without sparring, the average dude will crumble after 2 leg kicks since their legs arent conditioned
