your image explains everything, if the cholesterol you ingest promotes ldl, it will contribute to plaques , if you ingest food that promotes hdl nothing will happen , the total amount of cholesterol doesnt matter much its the ratio between the 2 types that does. it should be noted however that if heart disease runs in your family changing your diet will likely not completely prevent cardiovascular disease completely, it will slow its progress , but it will not stop its formation, since ultimately your cholesterol ratios are regulated by your body and diet can only offset it so much.
