Climbing

Any other climbers here? I started bouldering recently and it seems like a very good and well rounded form of exercise.

Ancient climber here. Started climbing in the 90s. Been at a strength plateau for many years but I've been developing a training and periodization protocol that has been promising. I might make it public if it keeps making me stronger. And yes, climbers are insufferable.

Been going to climbing wall for like 5 months. My best 2 climbs are 6b and 6b+ and yes the wall is full of jaks dyels and dykes. It makes it a lot harder. As for climbing itself i treat it more as yoga for my upper body.

It is fun, I do it more because I enjoy the rope systems and anchor building so I don't go to the gym much but outside is my jam

Zoomer climber here. It is a very good form of exercise, especially once you hit v7 and up. Most of the "hipsters" are the older generations, zoomers are far closer to your typical athlete since climbings inclusion in the Olympics and focus on more parkour-like gym problems.

Climbing is fun 🙂 it's like a playground obstacle course for adults. Every time I climb I get two days of full body DOMS but that's because I'm a tryhard and my grip isn't so weak that the rest of me barely gets a workout. I wish my local gyms had more footwork and balance based routes though, helps to give my hands a break.

I hate all the 100lbs copers that think they’re strong. Climbing is a weird sport, you basically have to hang out with the older guys or the teenagers. The 20-30 crowds are all anorexic as frick so they can grade fraud. Usually all bad stereotypes come from this age group.

      >grade fraud

      >Fall off a V8 50 times
      >Climb it once
      >Fall off 10 more times
      >Claim to be a V8 climber

Many such cases! Also, the people who hang forever on top rope routes trying one move over and over. If you couldn't do it fresh, you can't do it tired. Move on and stop wasting everyone's time. If I could make an anchor that lowers the climber after 10 minutes, I would.

        >trying one move over and over
        >can't do when fresh so can't when tired
It's called practice and trying to suss the technique behind a move. If anything trying to overcome a move while gassed is better training for multi pitch/long pumpy sport routes than breezing up stuff while fresh,

Been climbing a long time yeah. It is not a good or well rounded exercise. Climbing won't make you fit, although it will encourage you to get fit. It will frick up your posture and you will injure your fingers, elbows, and/or shoulders at some point. I agree with the other posters most climbers are weiners, at least the ones in the gyms. If you climb outside you will meet cool climbers

been climbing for the last 10 years, its very fun and good for some muscles but really it's about technique not strength. I guess its closer to cardio than anything. the millennial/very early zoomer climbers are responsible for the terrible culture, there's a few folks out there that are cool though. a lot of the old trade guys are pretty legit and IMO trade climbing is a good filter for avoiding the obnoxious climbers. its expensive though

Like trade routes up big walls?

I think it's a decent upper body workout if you're pushing yourself. However you're not going to get good at climbing by getting massive, so climbers are generally strong rather than big. No need for unnecessary weight when that's a limiting factor in your sport. Nonetheless, bodybuilders wish they could have forearms like climbers

I stopped because it got too expensive. But I still love it more than the normal gym.

Started going two years ago in the hopes of getting a gf since it's more social than the gym, but the only girls who seem to go climbing are those with boyfriends, so I don't bother anymore. I'd much rather just go to the gym and lift weights instead.

Mogging guys in front of their gfs by acing a boulder they just failed at is the best thing about this sport.

      >weighted pullups
Being good at climbing means you can do lots of pullups but just because you can do lots of pullups doesn't mean you'd be good at climbing

Being able to do lots of pullups doesn't cause good muscle growth, though. Hence why climbers are DYELs.
Unless your goal is to be a skelly, then climbing isn't the answer.

You can always go gorilla mode if you don't care all that much about grades. 205lbs @ 6'1, I know I'm not built for it but it's just too fricking fun.

It's good to supplement with climbing but not as a primary source of gains.

If you want to actually git gud at climbing then you need to train for climbing and not climb for training.
