They're essential, but limiting yourself to only compounds like many strength copers do is fucking retarded. If you want to LOOK like you lift, doing only compounds will give you suboptimal results, especially in muscles like lateral delts, which coincidentally are some of the most important for aesthetics.
For health and ofc aesthetics compounds are not enough.
Upper chest, lower lats, rear and lateral delts, abs, lower traps and external rotation for posture and and and and

I never feel more spent than when I do heavy compounds even though I do a ton of volume work.

Bodybuilders are always seething about strength lifters because they know their preference is mere vanity. Strength training will give you 90% of the aesthetics that bb will, while also making you more useful as a person and as a man. Strength on the leg press has no application to reality; the coordination afforded by the squat is what you need to be strong in real life; so too with all compounds. Are you really going to devote thousands of hours of your life to preening in a mirror? Are you that feminine?
