Not overconsuuming is a factor, look at their plate sizes, also exercise even if its just running or martial arts.

Sumo requires high weight to compete in, they get a pass because after their sumo time is over they have to literally go to a diet to burn out all the fat to not die early.

No, it doesn't. You have weight classes under 200lbs in sumo.

          Anonymous

You don't need a special intelligence to realize that eating too much food is wrong when other people in the world are starving to death

But self-control and long-term thinking is required to follow through, which is both a matter of intelligence and character

But blaming other people for your own shortcomings is neither intelligent nor representative of a person with personal accountability

The real victims are those who are raised to be like this by unhealthy parents, they didn't ask to be born to someone who feeds them a ton of unhealthy foods and causes them severe health issues

They just do what the people around them are doing

They didnt swap to a western diet and mostly eat their traditional foods + regulation.
It isnt due to fat shaming like said as their neighboor china also has similar social norms but it is getting fatter by the day, due to people eating more and more industrialized foods + little to no regulation on the fast food chains.

        Anonymous

The "carb-heavy" western diet is full of sugar and heavily processed carbs and unhealthy fats - non-satiating things. You can eat a carb heavy diet that is satiating (like Japan does) and regulate your food intake easier, or you can eat the modern western-diet that encourages you to over-consume food that your body stores as fat by more mechanisms than just calories in > calories out

Japans rate of carb consumption has gone down over time, not up, while diabetes goes up.

Carbs don't cause diabetes. This is pretty well established in the last few years.

PORTION SIZES. my god, the answer to this question, in every context, is portion sizes.

I use Quora and regularly see questions like "If iTaLiAnS eAt NoThInG bUt PizZa AnD pAsTa WhY aReN't ThEy FaT LiKe aMeRiCaNs???" and the answer is that they eat LESS overall. CICO is an incontrovertible truth. when will this be common knowledge? like really, how difficult is it for people to wrap their head around the concept of "eat more, gain more"?

Well Italian pasta doesn't have the same preservatives that American pasta does, but it is really portion sizes like you said.

      Anonymous

I think their diets contain a great deal more variety and protein than people give them credit for. Seafood (big one), pork, tofu, beef, it gets you good and full.
The metabo tax, customs of straight-up calling other people fat, and the social stigma against fat people is certainly also part of it.
I believe that car culture/commuting, or lack thereof, also helps. Even if it's not much, the steps you clock in if you walk to and from the train station or however you get to and from work are free exercise.

Portion sizes do help, but what impresses me the most about Italy whenever I go there is the way they take care of their culture and language.
I've seen Italian kids turn down soda pop for orange juice, I've not seen anywhere near as many Burger King/Macdonalds eateries as I see at home, and even the service stations serve good meat and cheese on good (if a smidge stale) bread.
That their food culture is so endlessly much richer than "nothing but pizza and pasta" is also something to address. Personally I'm partial to the seafood there, big sucker for swordfish and squid and cuttlefish, me.

a better question would by why has Japan resisted increasing their portion sizes unlike so many other cultures? I suspect it's because they autistically follow tradition, so the natural progression in casual food overconsumption never took place like it did in the West

      Anonymous

also drive-thru culture in America probably massively contributes to overconsumption. It's easier to buy 1000cals worth of fast food if you can eat in the car rather than having to endure the shame of eating it in public or carrying it on the local train. I wonder if we could get a city to try and test food portion restrictions and see how that would affect obesity

  31. 1 year ago

Japs are far more dependent on public transport, which means they do a hell of a lot more walking than your average mart sharter.
Also, their food portions aren't whale-sized.

      what's their secret?

Also it's actually shameful to be fat there. If you show up heavier to work your coworkers and friends will literally say "you've but on weight" or "I see you've gotten a little fat". They will call you fat to your face so people stay skinny to avoid this.

a better question would by why has Japan resisted increasing their portion sizes unlike so many other cultures? I suspect it's because they autistically follow tradition, so the natural progression in casual food overconsumption never took place like it did in the West

      >I suspect it's because they autistically follow tradition
I agree. Part of this is they don't snack as much. It's uncommon to eat outside of meal time in Japan when at work. At a lot of american offices, people snack on shit all day but in japan many people only eat during meal times
That said obesity/being overweight is on the rise there

Carbs don't make you fat, high fat diets do. Every country that adds more animal fat gets fatter. Every single one. For example, Hong Kong linearly got fatter with increased fatty meat intake. Atkins died 260lbs obese with a history of all sorts of heart problems (his record was made public by a guy who was exposing his grift)
