If you feel dips in your sternum, you indeed shouldn't do them

I have pain there too when I dip, is this because I am too weak or strong enough to destroy my own body? The latter sounds kinda based tbh

      ROM is too deep

        Checked.
I filmed myself, 40kg added, 6 reps, went with arm parallel to the ground, not lower.
A day later I started having some sternum pain.
After a week it was still there and I said frick it and did it again, now for 7 reps.
The pain didn't worsen but didn't go away for another week or so. Not too much ROM in my case, might be too much weight though for now, which sucks as it wasn't some 3 reps max ffs.

can you dip your bodyweight added for reps? if not you're probably just frail and dysgenic

Dips work chest if you do them like pic related. Idk what happened to think your sternum is being crushed. Maybe you're too tight and need to stretch. They're my favorite tricep exercise. Add weight for maximum blasting. I'm up to 2pl8 at 160 BW. Go until your arms are parallel and come up to full extension, don't go too deep or you could frick your shoulders up. But anyone who can't even do a single bodyweight dip is unironically not gonna make it.

I love it too, but my sternum and ribcage aches afterwards. I've heard stories of fractures and I am starting to think I should give up on it

Shoulder pain yeah when you first start doing it and perfecting your form but how the frick do you get chest pain from it? I don't see how that's possible.

I've seen some physiotherapists talking about how your rib/vertebral joints might be too tight and lead to lack of posterior mobility; that would be compensated by exaggerated movement between your rib/sternal joints, which leads to inflammation and pain (costochondritis)

I've lost the habit of doing these since my costochondritis. Know that feeling when you feel tension in a joint, like in your elbow or knee, and want to pop it but can't? I have that in my chest, around 2nd intercostal space, like all the time. Feels like stabbing chest pain sometimes I'm afraid to roll for stretches or bench. Just can't seem to find an exercise that helps reduce it, I made a thread here a while ago but no one cares to give advice. Anyway whoo yeah dips that make your chest feel like its about to rip guys am I right?

Yeah, I have the same. All the information out there sucks too. I've tried fitness FAQ etc and nothing really works. Fricking sucks because dips are a great exercise

I can't do them regularly. It causes pain in my shoulder joints if I do them for like 2 weeks every workout. I mix them in sparingly.

I tore my abdominal cartilage doing leg raises and also always got tendonitis when I had this phase where I wanted to do shit like Russian dips while 190lbs. The cartilage tear still hurts like a b***h even months later and I thought it was a hernia. Calisthenics being "risk free" is a dyel myth. 130lb homosexual doing tricks isn't the same as a guy with muscle doing it.

    >he can't dip
You're missing out. Transitioning from bench to weighted dips is the best /fit! - related decision I've ever made. Just warm up first and control your descent.
    >t. 2pl8x5 @184lbs

Might be the warming up part I fricked up, personally up to 2 plates*7 @170lbs but it hurt my sternum both times I did that.
Didn't hurt for more than a day with 30kg added.
The funny thing is my dips are supposedly quite good while my bench is shit in comparison, only 185*5.

        Anonymous

I'm the exact same. My bench is complete shit (maybe 102.5kg 1rm) but I can bang out 5x10 dips +30kg.
I can also OHP at least 60kg for 5, so it's weird that my bench is so bad.

yeah, just leave the dip rack to the real men.

If you stop doing them weighted, which is a manlet ego lifts (my best was 3pl8 at 190lb which was the sloppiest rep ever) and stop leaning into it the pain goes away. My other hack is doing a triceps isolation first so your front delt doesn't give out before your triceps, causing a chain reaction that hurts your ribcage and sternum. The shoulder is the most useless, fragile shit on humans.

Manlets get away with this shit because they look like this, probably being too generous. There is nothing there to hurt them because they're doing it with such a low intensity their body is operating at like 15%. You don't wreck a car going 15% of the speed limit.

    >but muh chest I got to lean like I'm doing a planche but not really
You do dips for triceps as first priority, then it's front delts and finally it's chest. Emg backs me up as nobody has ever gotten a stronger chest contraction with it compared even to a push up.
