You have to identify problem areas and then take measures to ease it there, so if a particular intersection causes tailbacks you adjust the timings on the traffic light or replace it with a roundabout to keep the flow of traffic constant

adding one bus to the road reduces the cars by 20. unironically. if it is simply more convenient to use mass trnsport there wont be need to use cars as often. now landchuds seethe when they hear this cause they thinkit means that cars will be illigal by the year 2023 but no. the better public transport is, the cheaper gas will get, the more affordable cars witll be and the less conjested the roads will be for the people who do choose to use cars.

I live in a third world hell hole and people take the bus because they cannot afford cars. The public transport system is actually good, it's just that middle class+ people don't take it if they don't have to because of the inherent risks. So yeah, insecurity is a big factor on how effective it can be

i do. the only issue here is homeless people addicted to fine chinese opium. a shame fricking caligays wont stop moving here though.

The problem is that buses are trash. You can't actually use them for anything except the most basic forms of transport.

Want to get to work on the bus? Be prepared to wait 15 minutes in whatever shitty weather it is, then sit there while the bus slowly winds down every fricking side-street in your neightborhood before getting off at a transfer station where you wait another 15 minutes only to do it all over again, finally reaching your workplace a fricking hour after you stepped out the door.

Or you could just drive for five minutes.

Want to go to a restaurant for lunch with the co-workers? Nope! You'd need to spend more time getting there and back than you have for lunch.

Want to go shopping for more than groceries or 1-2 small items? Nope! Can't bring too much shit on the bus with you, it's not allowed. Better pay to have it all delivered, instead.

Want to go to the cottage for the weekend? No chance.

Want to visit a friend and stay a bit late? Can't, the buses stop running.

Want to visit family that lives in the country? Buses don't go there.

It's all shit. And what's worse, the more people use them, the more buses you need on the road, and the less efficient they become. Even if people only actually *use* the bus to get to and from work, you still gotta run them all day, even if the driver is just doing rounds with zero passengers.

the solutions to this is might blow y our fricking mind: improve the busses. if you cant time a buss arrival you have brain damage. if your bus system downs collect then transport properly go to frickin town hall meetings and demand increasing public spending on busses and improving the routes. if you need to shop for a fricking months worth of food every week learn how to actually plan your meals and start eating fresher food that you will waste less of. its bog simple dude.

Trains/subways are a much better form of public transportation, but it is practically impossible to build the infrastructure needed for it now. Going through all those jurisdictions is something no one has the time or money to do. Our best trains and subways are absolute shit compared to some other countries' worst, literally. In Taiwan, a coworker told me that he (and everyone else there) was once reimbursed fare automatically because a train was off schedule by THIRTY SECONDS. No one even fricking noticed and he only found out after checking out why his balance went up that day.

light rail really is phenomenal. but supplying the rils with passengers starts with busses and medium density multi use neighborhoods.

But there are homeless schizos on the bus.

grow a fricking nutsack. homeless schizos are genuinely harmless if you know how to handle them. sit far enough away that you cant smell them. and tont make eye contact or stare. if you are scared of homeless schizos you are a 90 lb twink.

as opposed to 5 seat cars with only 1 person in it? i'm not even an advocate for public transport but your tales are all wrong, or straight up manipulated by constant propaganda

        >adding one bus to the road reduces the cars by 20.
No, adding one bus with 20 passengers reduces the number of cars by 20 (assuming all cars are SOV).
You need to look at transportation as a function of user throughput per width of right-of-way. A bus and a car take up the same 12-foot-wide lane of a roadway. The maximum throughput on a lane of traffic (generally, it depends on travel speed) is 1,600 passenger cars per hour, or (again assuming all cars are SOV) 1,600 users per hour. A bus is anywhere from 2 to 12 passenger car equivalents depending on the roadway grade so that means any bus traveling on that lane in mixed traffic has to have 2 to 12 riders (assuming SOV passenger cars) to break even on density. This sounds like a low bar until you realize that adding one bus with 12 passengers per hour only increases the throughput by less than 1% in ideal conditions. A fully-loaded city bus (50 passengers) is slightly over a 3% increase in throughput.
The calculus gets even worse with bus-only lanes, which are en vogue in the US, because for those to provide an equivalent throughput to a general-purpose lane the entire bus line has to carry 1,600 users per hour, or fully-loaded city buses on roughly two-minute headways. You will have a hard time finding a rapid transit line with that passenger volume, much less a city bus line.
This is why we don't put /n/ in charge of transportation planning.

Couple reasons. Since the 80s spending money on the public was deemed communism by right-wing Americans thus they will never vote for anything that will be used to improve people's lives. Racism, even if you proved that public transit would improve their life 100% and be cheaper and easier the chance that blacks could benefit or they might sit next to a Mexican means they will never vote for it. Lobbying, car companies and oil own congress only the most left wing politicians actually do anything to promote public infrastructure, most dems just talk but take no action and the righties just scream GOMMUNISM and then complain that their roads suck

Your average moron will happily wait 3 hours in traffic but will also stop driving the second you even mention to make car free areas because only then they will think that "it will become too hard to get around with a car". Anyone who is not shilling for public transport probably uses a car to drive somewhere that is a mile away from their home.

i used to be that man
why walk 30 minutes under the sun or in the cold when i can drive 2? i even have stores and services near enough, unlike many other
until i was made to realize that the cities we are born, live, work in, are not even made for walking
sidewalks and bike lanes are scarce and if you're seen around town walking, people will assume you're up to no good and cops will even stop you and fine you for loitering
you cant walk in your city, how fricked up is that? the place you live, where you pay taxes in, where your kids will grow
most Americans walk less than 1000 steps per day

Rural areas have shit food, almost every restaurant is just sysco food and the grocery stores are often meager and shitty. City folk have better access to produce due to being transportation hubs and they have money which farmers need. I lived in Grays Harbor and the people there were fat and dumb as shit.

          >Zoning is restricted
Large percentages of america are single family zoning i.e you can't build commercial and therefore residents need to travel to the few commercial zones, this is easy to look up and verify for yourself; plus parking minimums and other regulations are widespread

          >suburbia is subsidized
          https://www.strongtowns.org/journal/2017/1/9/the-real-reason-your-city-has-no-money

You can verify for most urban areas that the revenue/cost looks something like this, mantaining utilities and roads are not free + gas subsidies + the unaccounted cost of the land where the roads are built

            >strongtowns.org
Lel nothx. If you're seething about utilities being built for suburban areas, how to you feel about rural areas? Also do you really think people are going to want to pack up their family and move to an inner city apartment just because you want to ban cars?

Doesn't scale. Not everyone is gonna go to the gym, gym's business model literally depends on most people not going. A culture predicated on extreme individualism become rotten and sick in no time. See all the mass shootings in the US, the prison population, the levels of obesity, the average debt someone is in, the extreme right/left politics, etc.

          >60-70% of the population is overweight or obese with projections to go even higher in the coming years
Your solution is to go up to these people and ask them to eat right and go to the gym? In other words you don't actually have a solution, you just want to feel better about yourself relative to others. In other words, you were born in a sick individualist society that imprinted selfishness and antisocial behavior into you.

you can acknowledge that the game is rigged and the deck is stacked against you without completely absolving yourself of blame too, you know.
You think the entire world was going to the gym every day until the global obeisity epidemic just showed up out of nowhere?

American c*ties are a joke and I'm glad I don't live in them. Lol they couldn't even be bothered to build bike lanes in their shitty sprawls or in the inner cities, or build sidewalks to walk on. Nope, just make everyone rely on cars.

Meanwhile, I, a flyover chad, have open roads for days that I can drive on without being stuck in gridlock traffic. Trails to ride my mountain bike on, and fresh air to breathe. The nearest town is 20 miles away. I almost pity urbangays.
