Cycling Pill

Wish I lived somewhere that allowed for cycling to be the main mode of transport.

>Dont have to pay for fuel
>Dont need to find parking spaces for car
>Forces people to be fit reducing number of fat c**ts
>Marginalises fat c**ts from society
>Dont have to breathe shitty polluted air
>Dont have to hear the noise of engines, tyres and horns all the time

Ive come to hate living in my current city thats been designed for fat c**t consumers to drive their shit boxes around.

That post just shows how far behind most countries are. Where I live (not the netherlands, but europe), cargo bikes are more and more common. Even if you don't use a cargo bike you can just use a bike trailer. Not only is it similar to normal shopping, it is better: Ride up to shop in bike, disconnect the trailer, if it's one of those upright trailers that look like a golf bag go into the shop with it like those grandma trolleys, put your stuff in it (equivalent to a bag), reconnect to the bike, ride home.

They took a 4 lane street by me and made it 2 lanes with bike lanes on either side and a designated turn lane all the way. It's infinitely better. People hate bikes because they live in pure garbage designed cities (practically most cities) that forces anyone who wants or has to ride a bike onto the road and fighting with cars
Which is shit, frick cyclists on roads but obviously urban planning monkeys are too brain dead to figure out there are alternatives to car centric development.
My favourite areas are where planning boomers make "walkable zones" but they designed it for people to drive to this area, walk/cycle around a bit then drive back home.

      Anonymous

It is illegal to build cities and livable places built around humans in most of North America anon. Look up how moronic zoning laws are.

      >Minimum parking requirements creating huge concrete gaps between business
      >Minimum yard plots and distances from roads creating overly wide suburbs
      >Suburbs in general being the only type of housing you're legally allowed to build

And so.. so much more. It's written into law that you HAVE to build car centric, insolvable, overpriced, inefficient developments.

        Anonymous

Its not just America like that anymore
Boomer planning has spread, then they start thinking maybe it wasn't a good idea and make some pathetic alternative and call it "new urban planning"
        Its all so tiresome

          Anonymous

Much like oil companies "embracing green technologies and the environment", it's a thin veneer of greenlwashing. The VAST majority of residential development is still R-31 housing. You have a couple of somewhat walkable places getting built, but it's usually only very small spots along major stroads, which defeats the purpose of a small quiet spot. It's a Ponzi scheme and nobody wants to fully make the switch because there is still a frick load of money pumped into keeping the shitty system in place. Lobbyists make so much money because people need oil and vehicles to move around. The cost of infrastructure repair and maintenance falls to municipalities, so lobbyists don't care for them.

This is a big cope, I've cycled 400 km in the past two month and it didn't affect my weight. City "cyclists" would have to cover this distance in four to six months probably, with the same results.

Assuming you are like 6ft 220 lbs and you were going at 15kmh for half an hour a day,

you should have burned 13,175 calories which is like 4 lbs assuming you were eating maintenance, or 250 calories a day.

4lbs in two months is decent progress if you are also eating at a slight deficit. Lets call it 100 calories a day for 60 days. Thats like an extra 1.6 lbs lost.

thats 5.5 lbs, along with lifting, should push you to 6-7 lbs lost. in two months, or .8 lbs a week.

Thats 2.75 kg total and a third of a kg a week.

Unless you are really small and skinny and not trying to lose weight, Or eating way too much, idk how cycling doesn't affect your weight. You're doing something wrong.

I just looked at the calculator I used, and since I dont use metric often, I put you at 90 kg, which is 200 lbs, and 180 cm, which is 5'10. So if anything, you should have lost a lot more than just 2.75 kg or 7lbs. Closer to above 3.5 kg or 8.5 lbs.

I live in the backwoods with windy roads where cyclists are a serious hazard. I've started not moving over and trying to get within 6" as I pass, they lose their shit everytime. I might take my motorcycle out this weekend and go cyclist hunting, it would be fun to kick the bike at 50mph and watch them go flying.

do people who say this realize weather is a thing? its not always sunny outside. it rains and it snows... you want to ride a bike in that shit? i fricking dont. how do transport your groceries from the store to home? where does it all fit? in a little basket lol? is that how you want to live?

      Anonymous

I lived in Colorado for a year with only a bike and only rain is annoying, snow wasn't that bad since my commute was early enough to avoid the heaviest traffic. Also the store was .25 miles so it was no big deal to walk there daily if needed.

But it's usually not raining or snowing.

As for transporting groceries, it largely depends on how stores are spread out. If there are only a few giant ones, you most likely don't have one around the corner so a car would just be much more practical... but if there are tons of smaller ones, that means there's always one nearby so you can make trips to the store several times a week and therefore only carry like one or two bags at a time, which you can easily manage on a bicycle. Pic related is just one chain in Amsterdam, there are tons of grocery stores.

For transporting shopping, as soon as internet grocery shopping became a thing, I said frick wandering around a supermarket after work or at the weekend for the weekly shop, and went straight to getting groceries delivered.

          Anonymous

ive had groceries delivered before. its fine if you just want a bunch of processed junk food, but for real food like fresh produce, fish, meat, and stuff like that you have to trust these people with picking out the good stuff, and they just don't, they grab whatever and that's it.

            Anonymous

because they are getting paid less than minimum wage working for an app with zero benefits, would you dig through a pile of tomatoes or carrots to make sure the customer is getting the freshest, best quality produce over and over again all day? or would you just grab whatever the frick piece of meat it says on your phone and be onto the next order.

              Anonymous

thats my point though, for that type of stuff you have to go to the store yourself

                Anonymous

Did you get it via an official seller or is that some uber/delivery app where the people are literally payed to walk into the store and pick your shit?
Where I live Amazon has a cooperation with a grocery chain and they just sent me a 20$ discount for my first order over 80$, considering giving it a try.

                Anonymous

it was the grocery stores own delivery service. like i said its fine if you want them to pick already packaged/canned stuff off the shelf, but dont bother for any of the fresh produce or meats because they'll just grab whatever without caring if it looks like shit or not

                Anonymous

Good advice, thanks anon. I'll get canned shit and dried shit then for that discounted order. I don't plan on ordering after that again anyways unless I get another discount like this.

            Anonymous

You're being unduly pessimistic. In nearly 20 years of deliveries, I've not had problems with fresh produce (see typical order pic rel). The convenience outweighs any marginal improvements from spending time rummaging through what's on the shelf.

what always gets me about the living in a city and cycling everywhere r/frickcars crowd, is do these people not have any families or things they need to move? How do you go grocery shopping for a family of 5 on a bicycle? Do you kids not play any sports? No hockey/football/baseball equipment to take to their practice/game? How do you do anything as a family? Alright kids were going to visit grandma, everyone got on their individual bike and start pedaling.

It has nothing to do with teens be able to go someplace by themselves, the issue was how to you transport anything? My kid can get himself to hockey practice, but how would he carry his equipment on a bike?

What happens when he has a game that isn't at the local rink? Its only 75km away but are you going to cycle there with your equipment?

For that distance, a car is reasonable (if there's no suitable public transport); but for journeys under 10 miles, you should not be thinking motor vehicle as a first choice.

    ITT seething morons.

No cities are not designed around cars they're designed around land because the US has a lot of it. More distance to cover means you need faster transport. Bikes ain't it. The only places bikes work are in the densest cities which are New York, los angeles, and Phoenix in that order. Nobody bikes in Phoenix because it's in the middle of the desert and 110 degrees 9 months out of the year.

Places in Europe are quite dense. Consider that the average home size in the UK is 800 sq ft divided over 2 to 3 stories. Then consider that it's in rows filled with homes like these. Yeah you can walk all the way across a neighborhood in 2 minutes or less and immediately hit a highly urbanized area. When each of your neighbors has a 2000 sq ft home on one floor and a couple acres of land, you're not walking out of your neighborhood in any reasonable amount of time. Consider then that the subdivisions in the US are often built out of the way intentionally. This allows for the cost of the land to be cheaper than if you were to try to live close to the city center where demand for land is very high. People can then own homes of their own away from the city center but they need their own transport. The car is this transport. Without it nobody can own land in the US. You have to pay $3k per month to rent a shoebox in a Brooklyn analogue.

      Anonymous

      >where do you guys live that getting a bike is affordable?
Europe. In every european place I have been you can get bikes for very very cheap. My guess though is that where you live there isn't as much of a second hand market (the biketheft makes second hand bikes even cheaper, kek).

Did a quick check to see if I am out of touch since I haven't had to buy a new bike in quite a while:
Acceptable new bikes in a local bike shop where I live start at 250€, with options really opening up around 450€.
Ebikes (Pedelecs in EU) start around 1000€, with most a lot more options around 1500€.
But that is just the new stuff, if we look at the used market we can get much greater deals:
Bikes for men start at 5€ broken (fixing a broken bike is easy as frick, and adds maybe 20€ to the total price or some shit) with a decent choice around 25€ (yes that cheap, though I would replace a few parts for such a bike). If you are willing to pay like 50€ you can already find some used mid end bikes. Pay around 200€ and you can get some amazing bikes.
Used ebikes are a mixed bag and I don't really think I can comment well on those. If the battery is fricked it adds a lot to the total cost and they aren't so widespread yet that they have quite as big a used market. A quick look seems to show that options that aren't broken (because fixing a ebike is harder than a normal bike) start around 400€ but I don't know enough about ebikes to say if those are worth it or not.

Bikes occupy that holy grail of items for the used market:
      - Abundant/widespread - I live in a flat and there are at least 2 bikes/flat in the bikeshed, plus 2 that previous renters left behind without owner
      - big and bulky - meaning that storage of them is annoying
      - usually not needed quickly - meaning that buyers can choose and pick
This combo means that people are willing to sell vastly under what they payed for a new one.

the plastic tent will be an additional 400 dollars sir

Ignore the people that shill cargo bikes if you are looking for low cost. Cargo bikes are made for specific usecases, but you pay a lot for not much utility. Electric cargo bikes are built and marketed as "vehicle replacement options" with a price to match.
A carriage rack costs you around 50€.
Bike bags (left and right) around 100€.
A trailer around 80-200€ (though some of those can get expensive).
Pic rel is the burley travoy, one of the expensive options for a modular trailer you can use for shopping (that looks like a grandma trolley), which costs (without additions) 300£.
And you can save massively by going used/second hand.

a car still hauls cargo without the shifter knob, your bike needs the plastic tube trolly to carry anything at all

"The thing that costs 43000$ actually can carry more cargo than the thing that costs 500$" is not the rebuttal you think it is anon, kek.
You know, a car costs 86 times as much as a bike, but why bother? If you pay 86 times as much as a car you have a budget of 4.7 million$. For half that you can get a private jet. Carries more cargo, more people and is faster. Why bother with a car?

I'm leaving to go to the grocery store now, better take my 140 dollar wire basket, I've got a lot to pick up

Wouldn't need that wire basket if you just used your Cessna Citation Excel. Anyways enough talking, I gotta pick some wooden planks up from the hardware store. Thankfully my 2.364$ roof rack will make strapping those planks down quite easy.

you still don't understand the argument that a car can carry all your groceries and daily cargo with zero attachments or extras, a bike can't carry anything without all these bags and trailers. I don't need a roof rack to buy groceries for my family and bring them home, you need your 300 dollar trolley to bring your case of almond milk back to your apartment.

I don't do groceries on a bike since shops are always at a walking distance, but I do own a tactical backpack (instead of a schoolboy's one) and it's 45L. It certainly won't fit 45 one liter bottles but four or five, on top of meat-grain-bread, that it'd do easily. Anything below 10kg is an easy ride too.

He is actually seeting, it's not really worth talking to him anon. That other anon in

you still don't understand the argument that a car can carry all your groceries and daily cargo with zero attachments or extras, a bike can't carry anything without all these bags and trailers. either lacks the mental capacity to understand the argument, or is trolling, both aren't worth it.
to be fair the term tactical backpack is cringe, but if I am extremely charitable then that anon may just be so removed from other countries' reality that he literally cannot imagine a life without his car. He doesn't realize how much you can put into a backpack, because he only buys at a giant store where you have to get by car, and then enough for multiple weeks. He can't fathom someone going to a store twice a week to buy fresh produce. Average american brainrot I guess.

                >you still don't understand the argument that a car can carry all your groceries and daily cargo with zero attachments or extras, a bike can't carry anything without all these bags and trailers.
A bike can carry you. You can wear a backpack if neede, but 95% of bikes sold have at the very least a cargo rack above the backwheel. Enough to carry 1 big grocery bag.
                >I don't need a roof rack to buy groceries for my family and bring them home, you need your 300 dollar trolley to bring your case of almond milk back to your apartment.
No you absolute brainlet, my bike has no bags or attachments, it's literally stock, and I use it to buy groceries for me and my family no issues. You just want to make it out to be impossible without paying oscene amounts of money. I chose that moronic overpriced roof rack, because you chose a moronic overpriced wire basket. Don't complain if I do the same shit to you. Does a car carry more than a bike? Of course. And a jet carries more than a car. You are literally comparing something that costs 86 times more and being smug about it for no reason.
And I haven't even gotten into maintenance costs and shit. Bike doesn't really need servicing, insurance, fuel, tires last longer etc.
Just tell me what is your point? All you do is post overpriced products and then laughing at them. I can do the same for cars, and you would rightfully call me moronic.

if you're buying used, some else had to pay full price for it already....

Yes, but it's not me, so what do I care?
The question is "for what price can you get a decent bike" and the answer is below 100€ if you buy used. The fact that there are some people who will not consider the used market and then pay a lot for not much utility only to sell it for a lot less isn't my problem, nor is it the problem of the person asking how much a bike costs, or am I missing something?

don't these still have engines in them though? since the half assed pedaling of 10 drunk adults isn't enough to move all their bodyweight and 3,00 pounds of wood structure with roof, steel frame underbody, and beer kegs up a moderate incline?

I think some do, some don't. I've only ever been on 3 different ones, by different companies. 1 was unpowered (but they had a battery on board to cool the beer). Admittedly that city didn't have much elevation and once we got sufficiently drunk we didn't do much distance anymore. The other 2 had motors, but one was offroad in the vineyards and the other was a much more tourist infested city. No idea which version is rarer, but the unmotorized one was quite fun. I guess it would only work in specific cities though.

the only 1 I've been on had electric motors to help with inclines and when drunk people decide to give up on pedaling

Yeah those electric motors were on the 2 I was on with motors as well. Honestly once elevation comes into play it makes sense to have it, those beer cars are quite heavy.

You bike homosexuals complain so much that I'm starting to believe you actually dont even try biking around irl.

There are parks, streets in your neighborhood that can be safe to ride around. Dont be moron and try to bring your bike to the freeway.

Also, good luck trying to bike around in winter.
