Are deadlifts a meme exercise?
Yes. They aren't efficient for building muscle, require extremely strict form to avoid injury, and depend on leverage and mechanics to get the most out of the lift. The only reason people like it is because it's the lift you can do the biggest numbers on without having to have a ton of muscle.

lol I know a guy exactly like that. he lifts, uses a pull up bar in his room but never shows me his results, been lifting for years. part of the problem is he is never fully consistent with it. from his problems I now realize that your workout routine is far more important than diet. if you get lazy and quit for a couple months it's going to be a slow crawl back to your original strength.

The reason deadlifts aren't a good mass builder themselves is because all of y'all get the weight up and then just drop it, completely ignoring the eccentric portion.
However, in an indirect way, they help to increase total body strength and improve other lifts that do build mass more directly because you control your eccentrics.
most people can DL their body weight untrained. This guy is doing a little over double that.

Now think, if I do some training but I still can't curl over 100 pounds, am I going to have big bulging biceps? nah they'll only be a couple of inches bigger than whatever I started with. Maybe I started with 11 inch arms because i'm lanky and 13 is still less than the average guy.
