Don't take advice about ADHD from people who don't have ADHD (most of this thread)
Anyone saying Meditation helps is absolutely retarded and likely thinks it's not a real disorder in the first place
If meds are off the table, clean up your diet hard (zero sugar outside of fruit, low carb, high protein, high healthy fats, ideally meat, fish, eggs, light on the dairy, veggies & fruit obviously).
Remove any and all distractions first - a minimalist life works best. Keep a weekly to-do list that is flexible in terms of when you do things; this is to ensure that you can use impulsive motivation while still slowly building discipline.
Hit the gym obviously, switch your cardio to HIIT to stay with it. You might be prone to overdoing it in the gym (in order to get more stimulation), so use a program with a relatively slow progression and stick to it.
Pick a day of the week where you aggressively power through all the tasks that you have a really hard time with.

I have ADHD myself. I'll back most of this tbh.

He's right, you gotta get advice from people who have this. People don't understand if they haven't struggled with it.

Discuss non stimulant medication with the doctor. One I tried was stratera. It's pretty awesome. Worked for me for a while. I know why it stopped working.
Greentext about it if you want to know.
      > My productivity picked up 400% after a week.
      > Everything was suddenly easy and not a huge effort to get started. I could just decide to do things and I could just get up and do it. That's executive function working correctly in my brain.
      > Every dream I was forced to give up on because I couldn't fix my weird motivation problem (I didn't know it was ADHD till a few years ago) was suddenly possible again.
      > I was giddy with excitement most of the time
      > Before meds I would weaponise self hate to get myself moving, relying on ADHD to drag me back down to equalize. Reduced ADHD meant the hate process was active and accelerated with nothing to stop it
      >Worked so hard I burned out, then while burned out the meds let me keep struggling forward till I was also decently depressed.
      > After being given another chance at my dreams I never wanted to squander a moment.
      > Non stimulant medication doesn't help burnout or depression. It literally feels like nothing in those saturated states of stress and exhaustion.

I'm on dexamphetamine sulphate now. That's great stuff honestly.
      > After changing meds I got better from the negative self talk. But another burnout in less time but far less severe.
      > Cut down on coffee and cigarettes. You can kinda kick up the meds with both. Started having days off it for 2 days a week. Slows tolerance build up.
      > I made it guys.

I got better with the negative self talk stuff. It's kinda what happens to folks with undiagnosed ADHD. Positives of an ADHD label is replacing other labels like stupid lazy and useless. I don't advertise my ADHD. But it's great for treatment.

        >Worked so hard I burned out, then while burned out the meds let me keep struggling forward till I was also decently depressed.
this hit too close to home. I pushed for so long with the whole boomer philosophy of "just man up, just power through, just toughen up" that I ended up with panic attacks, constant recurring nightmares of insects eating me, randomly collapsing from exhaustion etc.
And it's a fucking joke, after years of "need no meds", to-do lists, steady workouts, controlled diet, constant frustrating attempts at meditation, constant alienation and failure despite doing everything "right", getting on a light dose of meds fixed every single problem I had over the course of a month, and it's stayed fixed for years.
Literally went from renting a shit room and sleeping on the floor to living with my fiancee in a beautiful apartment in the city, huge strides in career & physical health, fixed long standing health issues that seemed insurmountable before the meds.
If anything, I regret taking retarded boomer advice from this place back then.

My girlfriend has adhd but was only diagnosed recently. Before that, she worked around it by very meticulously planning out her day and being very thorough in preparing everything. I also tell her when she hits the rep goal in the gym when we train together because she can’t focus on counting and lifting at the same time

      Anonymous

on a psychological level, meticulously planning out can become a problem as most people with ADHD have a tendency to overestimate how much they can do in a day (and with ADHD it's highly reliant on day-to-day form and mental state). This can lead to shame and self loathing for not fulfilling all steps planned for a day. Keep an eye on that.

    cont.
Be very careful with caffeine, while it can provide a short term push, it can also really fuck with long term concentration and worsen ADHD symptoms (though if you truly have ADHD, most stimulants should have a very calming effect on you, otherwise you've been misdiagnosed).
There are certain long term psychological effects of ADHD, it's good to learn up on them so you can work on fixing them (rejection sensitive dysphoria, tendency to overwork yourself, sleep issues and revenge procrastination).
Finally, I achieved best results by skipping breakfast and getting straight to work on any tasks at hand before I could get distracted. So on wake up, straight to work/onto computer/to the gym with no distractions seems to lead to ideal productivity.
And I can't stress this enough, do not take advice from dumb normies on IST, that's like taking dating advice from incels.

are you retarded? it can help in the short term, but mess you up in the long term
A lot of people who don't use the meds end up addicted to caffeine in order to get even slightly close to the dopamine levels of a neurotypical brain, know a few who end up addicted to energy drinks, pre-workouts and coffee and worsen their condition that way
So you can power through a task with a cup of strong coffee or a red bull short term, but the negative effects hit harder and faster than for a normie (which is why you got half this board calling the other half pussies for not being able to drink black coffee daily and shit)

if you can focus and channel your "hyperfocus", you're not hyperfocusing, you're just concentrating - this shit is massively misunderstood even in ADHD circles
hyperfocus is by definition not something you can turn on or direct towards anything, it's a temporary fixation on something that provides enough stimulation and novelty in the moment

No it's on whenever you're interested/passionate about something.
Still may not gonna be on all the time doing the thing - but a lot of the time.

okay, so you're calling "liking something and therefore doing it a lot" hyperfocus
sounds like self-diagnosed teenage nonsense to me (or you've massively misunderstood the term)

I'm talking about Hyperfocus in people with ADHD, you're apparently just autistic

I am in the same boat as you, OP. I had to come off ADHD meds because of severe hypertension, I was going to blow a gasket in my brain or heart. There are other things that can help, but none will be as effective as Adderall.

    > guanfacine
Great for me because it's also a hypertension med. Helps clear focus, but takes a few weeks to kick in. Plus your doc won't look at you like a fucking junkie when you ask for it.

    > NAC
Not a lot of clear evidence (source? source? I need a SOURCE. Yes a peer-reviewed SOURCE or your claim is invalid), but anecdotally it helps me.

    > extended fasting
Every time I am on an extended (24h+) fast, I get hyper-focused on work, because it's the only way NOT to think about food.

    > cytomel/T3
This stuff is pure energy. I take it morning and night, and it wakes me up like Adderall does, but doesn't give you the same hyper-focus as amphetamine.

Effectively nothing. ADHD affects your ability to make and adhere to plans and that's the exact thing that you need to be able to do to solve any kind of problem.

    t. ADHD.

I spent 6 years trying to fix my shit and failed. Took dexamphetamine and within 3 months I was functioning like any other normal human.

Surely there's SOMETHING you can do? Can't they replace the valve? Dex doesn't even affect my heart rate.
