Did/do any of those brain training games actually work?

My attention span has been worn down to a nub and is at the point where it's actually scary how bad my short term memory is.

There are things you can do to improve your attention span. None of them really involve gaming though so I doubt you'll do any of them

I haven’t played video games in forever. I’m 36, no one my age plays video games unless you’re still single or live with your parents (incel losers). I would guess that your attention span is shit because you play video games and are terminally online on social media and inside a lot. You need to slow your life down. Learn to hunt or fish and leave your phone at home. Go sit in the woods. Take up cross country, read physical books , whatever you have to do to slow your world down and disconnect. More importantly lift weights and do cardio and learn new skills like cooking or car repairs. Save yourself some money. Just change your life man normal people aren’t creating IST threads asking if Nintendo switch games help them make their memory better

go to a physical library in the real world and read a book for an afternoon. Repeat until cured. It's a public place so might help you with some discipline. Meaningfully reading a book requires paying attention to it and thinking about it. If you're just gliding your eyes over the page while thinking about something else, stop, go back, read it for real.
The key word there is "stop". You need to terminate distracting thoughts. Don't let yourself think about something other than book. Think of yourself as like a US Senator, fillibustering your own brain to prevent debate. Part of you wants to pull up twitter and you drown that part in a desire to think about the book instead.
This is actually so easy a skill that morons do it all the time, and often unwisely. Did you never get in trouble as a kid and not even be able to explain yourself because "why did you do that?" didn't have an answer? Do you think people who fight with cops and die are calmly and carefully evaluating their decisions? Like a shark that turns its eyes into its head when it attacks, men can pick a course of action and actively prevent themselves from doubting it until they're done. Flex that skill and use it in small amounts until you can pay attention again.
Don't use it to shoot up a walmart.

Extremely based & accurate advice. All of those "brain training" games will actually further shred your attention, because each puzzle is so quick. A book requires time, attention, and digestion.

Like with strength training, you have to follow the law of specificity. If your attention span is ass go meditate, if your memory is ass do more active recall.

contemporary propaganda is designed to be consumed in completely independent millisecond intervals. you don't remember it because you're not supposed to

      What does this mean...?

it means the media environment that you've lived and breathed your entire life is purpose built to shred reality into tiny fragments so that your thoughts and opinions can be controlled. you can't even escape from it entirely because other people act as access nodes, but you can with some luck learn to moderate the influx. have you ever considered how bizarre it is that you and everyone around you are expected to consume information that would have filled a library just a few centuries ago every few days?

I like these games, I don't know if they work for what you're wanting, though. Two things that will help are playing longer form chess games (10min, NOT BULLET SHIT) and meditation. You basically have to force yourself to concentrate if you want any chance of winning a chess game.

No they don't work. All they will do is get you to spend more time on a computer, which is causing your attention issues. Some stuff that might help:

    >Read a book
    >Concentration Meditation
    >Learn an instrument

when you play games you get better at the games you play. It doesn't really transfer outside what skills you use.

Like, I'd imagine FPS's help with reaction time due to its incentive structures in gameplay.

OP, don't buy a video game if you want to practice using your brain, there are books for that

Stop using the internet so much.

Never use short form media platforms (tiktok, instagram reels, youtube shorts)

Turn off your computer. Get picrel and put your phone in it. Do not look at any screens for at least a month. Read a book or something if you need entertainment. Get some kind of creative hobby like writing or photography. It can even be something autistic like gunpla or 40k minis. Main thing is stop using the internet, though
