Discipline

Why can't I develop discipline?

I've tried for years but I fail, that's why I lift for a week or two and then stop for like 4 months or so.

Same with dieting, same with nofap, same with grooming, same with meditating.

    because you're either
    >a pussy
    or
    >depressed

realize that as a man in this world you have to take initiative to get anything. you should be pissed at yourself for not developing good habits and that should be motivation enough.

because you set the goals and dont hold yourself to them. you make small concessions because youre busy that day or youre stressed. next thing you know youre back to where you are. if you want discipline, do something irrationally and uncompromisingly.

You probably don't have a solid goal in life. Also when you do find the motivation to stay motivated you need to keep reminding yourself of what inspired that. But that requires some level of discipline too

Find a purpose/reason as to why you're lifting,I imagine scenarios where a family member is injured or sick and I have to physically carry them to the hospital,if I would have the shoulder/leg strength to do it,or if I were upstairs inside a building onfire and my only way out was either down a steel beam,or between two walls,or if someone is entering my home to rob/kill me and if I would have the required reflexes/agility/skill to quickly dismantle them with a firearm before they do so to me.

I've tried this but the effect wears off after a few hours.
If I imagine I have to save my mom or dad from a dangerous situation the voice inside my head always ends up saying: "you are pretending and you fool no one"

Don't pretend you're currently doing it,imagine if you were capable of doing it in your current state and what you could do to make yourself capable.

Write your shit down and put it somewhere you can see it all the time. A calendar on the door with X's on it. Once you do something for a month or two it becomes engrained in your routine and a lot easier to stick with.

I think all these replies are prolly right but that kind of motivation never really worked for me. Im still figuring out the grooming, dieting etc. but lately what's helped me keep working out is making it easy on myself. I do three days a week, I don't work out in the morning because it's harder to wake up early, and because of that I've been going fairly consistently now for 7 months. Ive gained almost 30lbs of muscle (was semi DYEL) and my lifts are around 1/2/2.8/3 so I think that's decent.

Idk man I think you just gotta go easy at first and build habits instead of just beating yourself up about it. Small progress over time is better than no progress.

You need to make it your identity. Working out is part of who you are and you do it because that's what you do. Same with basic ass shit like hygiene and eating well, it's who you are as a human

      This.

I didn't identify with fat people or bad smelling smokers, so i stopped eating shit and smoking. Then i started to idolize athletes and wanted to be like them, so i identified with them and started getting fit.

You need to get to a mindset where you feel bad if you miss a workout and or some crappy fast food.

Just keep trying, take note of what derails you and plan to avoid that situation entirely. Also noFap is a meme beyond the obvious if you are wanking 4 times a day you should get a fricking job.

You say you've tried it for years but trying only starts when it gets hard, and that's where you always give up, so you never build up any discipline.

I don't think it takes discipline to work out if you are enjoying your workout and use it as an outlet. I can't imagine not working out, I get all fidgety and have trouble falling asleep at night.

Also, lifting weights isn't the only type of workout. Maybe you need to train a martial art or swim or something like that.

What lifting routine have you tried? What other types of exercise have you tried? Do you feel energetic throughout the day generally or are you generally tired?

Work out with a friend whos dedicated, and focus on your improvement in 1 - 3 months at the gym. For food find HEALTHY YUMMY FOOD, not boring trash, there are tons of recipies to make low calorie pizza, cookies, pancakes, french toast.

Create a workout program you can complete. Make it simple, easy and achievable - you're not competing against anyone. Don't include any exercises that you don't enjoy doing. Say six weeks, three days a week, two main exercises per workout, with a warm-up and cool-down. Make it 45 minutes tops. The objective is not to burn yourself out, lose any weight, or improve any performance. The objective is to complete the program.

The exercises don't matter, could be lifting, could be bodyweight stuff, could be kettlebell work, could be jump rope, whatever you like. And then in six weeks, see how you feel.
