Do Starting Strength and 5x5 Strong Lifts guarantee obesity?

If followed exactly, both require extremely rapid progressive overload fueled by a large calorie surplus, which seems like it will necessarily result in fat gain, since you can only put on so much muscle so fat.
What's wrong with progressing slower, and trying to put on more muscle, less fat?

Nothing. Following someone else's program to the letter while ignoring what you personally want is most likely going to make you unhappy. If you don't want to look like a powershitter, don't lift like one and don't eat like one.

You ever hear of Novice gains anon? You want to build up that strength as fast as possible before your novice gains period ends. Slowly progressing won’t do.

Lol wait you think novice gains are somehow dependent on a countdown clock?

Alright man go ahead and “progress slower” lmao. What kind of moron wouldn’t want to get as strong as possible in the shortest timeframe?

Does that count the extra weeks and months of dieting needed to strip off the extra fat?
Honestly, it seems like these programs were designed for skinny dyels who don't eat.
I feel like anyone who's average or overweight, or has a history of weight problems, should be much more careful when it comes to caloric surpluses.

Yes. If you're not DYEL then why would you be trying to "start" strength? The entire premise of Starting Strength is that it takes DYELs and makes them as strong as possible as fast as possible. Gaining strength (without injury) is the only consideration here. If you want to lose weight this is not the correct program. If you want to do "maingaining" this is not the correct program. If you're trying to get aesthetic in the immediate future this is not the correct program. It's a strength base building program. I don't know why people criticize Starting Strength for being exactly what it claims to be. Rip himself is a fat red faced Texas boomer who does BBQ cooking videos and podcasts where he yells at callers about how they're not eating enough. What more does he need to say to make the intent of his programming clear?

Best post. It's incredibly easy for a DYEL to make it after a 6-9 month SS program where they have multiplate lifts on the big 3

Literally no one has said SS for hypertrophy, ottermode, or losing weight. Everyone with two brain cells understands its a novice program you do for 3-6 months and move on.

            Anonymous

Getting snapped up is caused by either doing too much, lifting more weight than you can handle, or lifting with bad form. If you are always in control of the weight, lifting it correctly, and lifting a weight you can handle, you won’t get snapped up.

I know a guy doing this program and he is pretty lean, but the main thing not going right for him is just he progresses so slowly. like he is gaying up with microplates every day to go 0.5lbs higher on various lifts.

No, the diet is on you. If you want to look good, you should add these to the big 4: pulls ups, dips, barbell rows and arm day.

You can do a moderate calorie surplus instead of a large one and get basically the same results without getting fat.

200-500 calories a day extra is plenty for you to grow. Start out with 200 extra and increase to 500 extra if needed.

There is literally no reason why you can't just eat at a small surplus and make gains on SS. If you're starting at sub-15% bodyfat you'd really have to be fricking up badly to end up visibly overweight.

Lifting in general is almost a total waste of time if you aren't going to eat, it's just immediately obvious you're spinning your wheels on a linear progression program.
