not really. there's nothing stopping you from working out and playing some video games

ive tried quitting wow but the addiction crawled back to me, used to be 16 hours on it everyday for 5 years
nowadays i only raid/play on saturdays/sundays which are my gym rest days

Nope. I sometimes play Fallout New Vegas to chill, or emulate some old stuff. I grew out of games after puberty.

FPBP. I genuinely believe investing time into (non-competitive/professional) games in adulthood is unhealthy. If you treat it as watching a movie or something it's fine, but if it's your hobby you're wasting your time, there's much more to life.

Multiplayer games are typically made to make you waste as much time as possible on grinding for relatively useless things(ranks, weapons, cosmetic items). Unless you genuinely enjoy every minute of playtime, stay the frick away from them

Single player games typically prioritise being good fricking games over just making you sink countless hours into them. Shit like Skyrim, borderlands, dark souls/bloodborne/sekiro can feel Grindy at times, but you can definitely play through these games and enjoy them fully without grinding for best items/gear. Singleplayer games are chill and relaxing, whereas multiplayer games are typically more engaging and at times more fun, especially with friends.
        As this Anon:
Said, having videogames as a genuine hobby into adulthood seems to me atleast, to be unhealthy and honestly a sign of lacking character. Treating it as the waste of time(relaxation and time to destress) it is, is fine though. Moderation in this case is at most 10 hours a week as I see it.

          Anonymous

Damn, anon. I'm glad we agree so much, if anything I'd just 10h/week to like 5.
We should play vidya together sometime no homo.

This is so true I barely have enough time in the day to get the things I want to do done. I probably have two hours or less of free time every day. The last weekend I had to, I think I had maybe an hour of free time on Friday Saturday and Sunday. I was constantly going from event and thing to the next event or thing. In my opinion you're not living in life right if you have enough time to be sitting around on your ass watching TV and playing video games

            >this, all those 'hard-workers' are just npc's who fell for the work hard meme
its painful how true this is. working hard only makes your manager think you actually enjoy the grunt work and you'll just stay there forever. You need to network, socialize and be liked by your superiors in order to move up. I learned this the hard way.

China will eventually replace America because westerners have the luxury of being complacent.
Chinese multiply like bugs and have the work culture of bugs. Their population is alone will assure this.

I stopped gaming a lot around 2015 when I was still a teenager but the last time I played a game on my own was when red dead redemption 2 came out. I skipped the gym about half the time and didn’t socialize once for two weeks while I played through it. I felt like absolute shit at the end. Since then I’ve kinda sworn off gaming

I think this is over stated. I used to be an fgc guy and I gave it up in 2019 after the pandemic killed everything and I decided to focus on not being an incel and do more social things.
I keep comparing myself to normies to try to figure out if I am living my life right but I find normies only have two activities, watching netflix and drinking, both of which are living much less than when I was heavily invested in fighting games.
Nothing is worse than going to a social event, asking people about themselves and learning they don't do anything and have nothing to offer.
I just try to focus on active hobbies and hobby groups.
I still think video games can offer a more involved life than what most normies are doing but it still an unfulfilling one.

        Anonymous

you have a good point and games taught me a lot of things but i think the biggest factor was the dopamine hits
i was chasing achievements in game and rare shit just so i could get mired by other players and get the dopamine hit
inside my head as a teenager i was like, why the frick would i lift, work, study when i can get all this dopamine for free without doing anything in a beautiful fantasy world?
maybe thats why normies are always into console and singleplayer games

          Anonymous

I think single player games are no different from Netflix or other normie shit. It just kills time for them. As a teenager school always came first for me and only now that I have a career I put fun things as my first priority and career and studying on the back burner.
I leaned hard on learning to socialize with people over the past year but now when I talk to people my whole feelings on things are reversed. It used to be that I thought I didn't know how to relate to normies but now that I am so active I think normies don't know how to behave as humans, just grazing animals.
It is a very different type of disappointment these days. Still no gf but more than like 80% of women aren't even worth a coffee date in the first place.

Disagree, everything is fine in moderation.
      t. works 80-100 hour work weeks, has a girlfriend, and works out 4-5x a week. Video games on rest days are a good way to destress and recover. I play with my gf sometimes too. Vidya is literally dead last on my priorities list (I JUST got to the snowy area in Elden Ring lol) but I make time when I can.

I've seen a few studies where they're good for your brain. Obviously avoid the gambling and MMO grinds + any game that makes you feel toxic (overwatch, league)

        My flashbacks are:
Runescape and WoW (2006-2012, 2018 OSRS): taught me to hate grinding passionately.

Overwatch 1: actively feeling upset after a 20-30min time zap

I dont need studies to know that, having to make your brain adapt to play a new game sure as hell must be doing something, for example I was playing this old japanese racing game recently and the driving model is werd as frick,it has taken me hours to be able to play normally and not like a shitter to win races + learning all the other aspects of the game to tune the car, etc.

I've always played video games competitively, because I enjoyed the camaraderie. I started it while I was in high school and I was on the baseball, football, and track teams. In college I continued competing but not so seriously because it was fun - sort of like how some boomers are on a bowling league or something like that. At this point I don't have time to play competitively because I have a wife and 4 kids and a pretty full schedule. Still, maybe 2 or 3 nights per week I make time to hang out with some of my longtime gaming buddies and play around in a game or two. It's mostly social, kind of like going to the neighborhood poker game.

Some people are addicts though. I've always been able to just put games down if they were detrimental and sapping my time. I've known a lot of people who are like heroin addicts. I think it helps that I've always played FPS and RTS, I've never really been into RPGs outside of playing Diablo 1 and 2 as a kid. I've never once installed, started up, or played WoW. That fricking game sucked more players away from my competitive team rosters than anything else.

One time ever, between the fall and spring semesters at college, I didn't go home because my parents were on a long trip somewhere and my brother was busy working. I stayed in my apartment basically from like December 17th through January 17th and I decided frick it I'm going to go hard in a video game I was playing on leagues at the time (it was CS Source). I think for maybe two weeks straight I spent maybe 12-14 hours per day playing CSS. I'd stop to eat, sleep, go to the gym, and shit/piss. I'm not a person who gets depressed but that was the absolute closest I ever got in my entire life to feeling depression. My mind was fried daily. My ass started hurting from sitting so much. I thought with all this constant practice I'll certainly get better but I actually got MUCH worse over time to the point that in the end I was so burnt out I could hardly function correctly in a competitive context.

So after those two weeks I said alright that's enough I'm taking a full week off of video games, I'm going to go out and about and do some hikes in the area and go to real places and meet up with some friends who stayed at school over break and all of that stuff. I felt a billion times better by the end of the week, and I came back to CSS for a match we had on a league and I had one of my best performances ever. Since then the thought of playing more than a couple of hours at a time has made me started feeling nauseous.

probably the best mmo out there, not sure why its so addictive, ive played pretty much every mmo out there but its just the playlist, how ur character move, the immersion, the pve and pvp are enjoyable for the most part
its just a complete game and its grindy, most of my addiction came from chasing pvp titles tho, not many other mmos have that, like achieving gladiator or rank 1 is something hard/cool and you get mired by having it in game

Playing traveller got me really into science fiction and call of Cthulhu got me into lovecraft and cosmic horror. I’m not some autist who needs all past times to be perfectly enriching or anything, but I definitely spend more time actively thinking and enjoying myself with tabletop than vidya, where I would sometimes zone out like a boomer watching TV.

These threads are so funny to me because every single time, the majority of "life runing" games that get mentioned are
    >asshomosexuals like lol or dota
    >comp shit like csgo, valorant, fighting games, etc
    >mmo garbage like osrs, wow, eve, etc
Basically, IST, amd the homosexuals who tell you to drop it entirely, have fricking terrible tastes in things in general. It's just that video games show you how bad they are. To be fair, I can't drink but at least I can admit my short comings: I'm way to susceptible to going crazy with alcohol due to it dulling my self control and you have terrible tastes in video games to where somehow you can't play anything else. Games give you greater problem solving abilities and reaction time.
Books boost your imagination and general culture.

There is some research to suggest that playing video games can improve problem-solving skills. For example, a study published in the Journal of Educational Psychology found that playing video games that require strategic planning and decision-making improved problem-solving abilities in both children and adults (Li, Chen, & Chen, 2016).

Another study published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior found that playing action video games can improve cognitive flexibility, which is the ability to switch between different tasks and perspectives (Green & Bavelier, 2012).

However, it is important to note that these studies do not necessarily suggest that video games are a better tool for teaching problem-solving skills than reading books. Both activities can provide valuable cognitive benefits, and the best approach may depend on the individual's preferences and learning style.

That being said, reading books, especially philosophy and literature, can also provide opportunities for critical thinking and problem-solving. Reading complex texts can challenge readers to interpret and analyze information, draw connections between ideas, and develop arguments and solutions. A study published in the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience found that reading literary fiction can improve readers' ability to understand and empathize with other people's perspectives, which could also be seen as a form of problem-solving (Kidd & Castano, 2013).

Overall, both playing video games and reading books can provide valuable opportunities for problem-solving and critical thinking, and the best approach may depend on the individual's preferences and learning style.
