          Yes
They'd charge you a few dollars for a side of broccoli that's a tiny fraction of that bag at a restaurant, and they have the production scale to do it a lot more efficiently. That clearly shows the high value of labor necessary to make the broccoli edible.

You can literally microwave that in minutes

So now I have to spend several hundred dollars on specialized equipment just to cook some broccoli? What a joke

First, eating healthy is cheaper than fast food. Chicken, rice, oats etc are all far more bang for the buck than goyslop you paid for to wagie to cook on the spot.
Second, don't buy chopped fruit. Bananas and oranges in bulk are far cheaper.
Third, there's no such thing as "food system". People didn't just sit and randomly decide your homosexual chopped fruit should cost $4. It's regulated by demand and supply, and fruit is always gonna be relatively expensive to produce.

same supply, higher demand = higher price. your statement is only true in the sense that generally, when demand is high, the supply will increase until it's profitable, therefore driving down the prices, and with it also comes the benefit of large scale production that generally decreases the costs.

            Anonymous

Look wise guy I'm trying to get across the point that 3.99 for the fruit cup is actually very cheap.

Sorry for the TLDR but I think for most people (depending on what region you live in of course) there isn't a huge shortage of premium options out there if you want higher quality fruit if you are willing to pay more. With most new fruit varieties the main focus is on temperature tolerances, different chill hours etc., and pest resistance. It seems like every few years there are new diseases and pests. Now that might mean that commercial producers aren't choosing varieties that are the finest tasting but the reality is that a healthy tree of a lesser variety is still going to taste better than an unhealthy tree of a better variety.

Peaches are one of the few fruits I gather just do not taste as good as they once did. Old timers tell me frequently that it is harder than it used to be to find a good peach (but peaches are notoriously finicky anyways I guess so it might be expected).

I've never had a problem with potatoes. Now fruit trees are a constant issue as far as disease and pests go. And even if you lose a crop of something big deal you have next year. With fruit trees if they get hit, those trees are done for and its going to be another 7 years before you get back to where you started. I'm so sick of people that believe fast-food restaurants should be a part of anybody's life. There's no good reason to eat anything these places produce other than sheer ignorance. It doesn't save money or time. I'll buy into the social argument if you want to go to a normal restaurant, but honestly I don't even believe those should exist. There are simply better ways to date and hang out with friends than stuffing your face and tipping some underpaid staff for not calling in sick that day. Don't even get me started on food deserts. This isn't a reason to support fast-food as an option. It's a fricking reason to build more grocery stores and hold urban planners accountable for their stupidity. The only time I eat out now is when I'm basically being forced to so I don't offend a family member that feels like it's some treat and frankly I'm done with that shit too. Sorry for the rant.

I largely agree, but there is a time and a place for fast-food. Maybe if you are on the road or in a hurry or just want some cheap fast lazy goyslop once in a blue moon.

The problem is that people don't treat it like what it is- cheap(ish) quick standardized grease slop slapped together by minimum wagies. It has its place but people shouldnt eat it very often and certainly should not think of it as a normal part of their diet kek.

But yeah every so often (like once every few months) I will go get some slop from McDonald's or something.

I've never understood what people mean by grass-fed beef. I have considerable experience with beef operations and it is my understanding (in my region at least) that almost all beef is grass-fed up until a few weeks before they go to market (where they are supplemented with a feed to fatten them up). Now I honestly don't know what happens to the yearlings when they get sold and I am aware of some big feed lot operations in the Midwest, but I am curious what is the actual difference in "grass fed" other than just it being a higher quality in general?

        Anonymous

Grass finished is the proper term for distinction. They are never finished on grain before slaughter.
Grass vs grain finished beef is a lot of speculation health-wise. We know that grass finished has different ratios of omega 3 and omega 6 fats and the composition is a bit different. This could be incredibly significant or not at all, there are human trials going on now as I understand it to find out the truth, but we can't say for sure if grass finished is more healthy currently with absolute certainty.
Some obvious things about it are it tastes different and is going to be leaner than grain finished.
I eat a lot of beef and usually just go for grain finished, but if I find a deal on grass finished then why not?

BUT on a systemic level, people are still just getting fatter everyday and individual responsibility counts for nothing. We've been operating on individual responsibility this whole time and it just creates obesity.
McDonald's is only so easy because of the massive economies of scale, mechanization, and mobilization of service behind every step of production, otherwise it'd be no different to making some potatos at home. Japanese are freaking spoiled, I would make my way to a local bento store if I were living in Japan to get my homemade style lunches. Can't beat authentic.

I remember shortly after I first started trying to lose weight and get healthier, I was in a gas station with a big convenience store attached to it. I looked around and realized that there were literally hundreds of different food products on sale, and nearly all of them were just straight up junk food. Row after row of potato chips and candy, factory made sandwiches with deli meat and cheese in HFCS bread, "healthy" ultraprocessed meal replacement bars and cookies, and multiple refrigerators with sodas and beer. The only sort of healthy things were a few bags of unsalted nuts.

There was no fresh fruit for sale, no salads, no yogurt. How are people supposed to make smart choices when this is what's thrust in front of you constantly?

    >our "system" is "broken" because a single mom with no high school education and several kids all from different men can't find the time to cook ingredients that are cheaper and healthier than pre-made bullshit
If you cannot find a couple of hours a week to make food, you're the one that's broken, not """""the system""""".

So we need cheaper high sugar options? We need to lower the price of seasonal fruits or raise the price if easily grown potatoes? What a fricking brain dead picture.

its the regulations on farming, coupled with massive subsidies to corn growing specifically which is why its in all food in the USA.
    this is what is wrong.

All food should be more expensive and yes major crops are heavily subsidized. More natural food prices would make it less necessary to conduct high volume farming which means the medium-small family farm would be a more feasible option once again. This would ironically solve a number of social woes as the family farm is literally how you produce decent people who aren't completely useless and moronic.

and we need to prevent larger groups from purchasing mass amounts of farm land, holding monopolies.
