"Don't worry, gyms are full of beginners"

Where does this myth come from? I've been told that several times but I've started to go to the gym and I did not notice any beginner like me.

Dude, seriously, give it 4 months at most and you'll see a shit load of progress. I started seeing progress in my biceps about a month in, about 5 months in and now you can visibly see my still dyel muscles withought flexing. It can be a bit strange going to the gym by yourself at first but once you get in the groove you'll be golden. Don't be a homosexual and don't be a quitter. Black person. WAGMi.

That's a you problem. That is not the case in most gyms. I think you've been reading the bantz on IST and are thinking it's all actually real life.

Yea, I get it, I'm a fatty in recovery. It is a bit hard at first not growing up in sport because you aren't used to being sweaty or pushing yourself but you get over it. It's really all in your head, seriously. If I see a noob in the gym I don't pay attention to them. My eyes are on the big guys lifting big weights. I might see the noob, say I mog him in my head then move on. I'll acknowledge you if your using equipment I want. That's it.

Keep your head up and get into the rhythm of going, after it becomes a habit you'll loose the anxiety and you'll look forward to going. Go regularly and in a year you'll be a gym rat and you won't need to worry about being judged by most people. Although there honestly isnt as much judgement as you think.

Please don't be a homosexual and go to planet fitness to have a "judgement free zone".

I don't have planet fitness in the country I live in (France), we have two different big brands : Basic Fit and Fitness Park, which are both low cost and both very crowded gyms. Low cost usually means low SES background for the people who go there, this is why I fear judgement. Do you get what I mean?

But this week he's bought me a red bull each time I've come in so it's not that bad.

Yea my gym's rapist gotten me a few times. Maybe every 3 workouts he'll get me. At first he hurt me really bad but he started to be sweeter when he would get me because he didnt want me to be too scared as to stop going. Last time I was in the gym he put a mounds bar in my locker with a sticky noted heart. He still raped me later on but I really appreciate the thought and it lets me know he cares.

I also go to basic fit and I just started after years of not praticing and I had the same issue as you growing up (the feeling of being always watched and judged, the uneasiness that prevent you from doing even the simplest exercice)
So I just got back with a friend and I'm doing SL 5x5 so I started with a measly bar squatting and benching and I did not give a shit cuz I'm over that.
The things that really helps a lot is music, just buy some airpods or the cheap ripoff put them in and put your sound and you'll even forget other people are their.
Then when you lift you should be consciously thinking about your form and feeling your muscle so the sentiment of disconnecting with the outside world will be even better.

I didn't say you'd hurt yourself lifting heavy. I said you'll snap yourself up.
Guys like you hurt themselves even lifting light weights because they never take the time to properly learn how, or want to skip their warmup so they don't look weak, etc.
Every single person at your gym started somewhere once. Why are you worried if guys who have been lifting for years or decades longer than you are bigger and stronger than you? Why would you expect otherwise?

Funny story, the only guy telling me shit about the amount I work is the friend that goes with me (but he does it for fun) but he actually had the same problem as you and spent month in his homegym building the muscle and courage to go to the real gym
Funnily enough I can see him snaping his shit in no time (he actually got routinely hurt during his homegym time)
He only egos lift and loses all form when he start to struggle even though he was commenting on my perfect form during bench lifting babyweight
Told him to try my squat today (a measly bar + 15 kilos) and he struggled like a b***h
I'm trying to steer him toward the good direction but I fear he is far too gone, he only does pec + tri on one day and the next one he does back and biceps, total gymbro

This is very helpful and this draws the line between you and me. I first went to the gym with someone from the French equivalent of IST IST I mentioned earlier. At the end of the first session, he advised me to do some research about dyspraxia because he thought I had it (I quote him: "you shake too much and lift too light even for a beginner")

I didn't want to stay on a failure and decided to go with him for a few more sessions, and here the way I was learning the execution wasn't good enough to his opinion. He was like "do you know it is supposed to be easy? Everyone knows how to do that spontaneously" for almost everything.

                Anonymous

by french IST you mean 18-25 ?
Yeah it seems you got a bad teacher
Personnaly I was too much of an axious dude to even ask stranger about their opinion so I went on IST and did my reasearch
There are honestly tons of resource and even video to help you get the form down
Also you most likely don't have dyspraxia but you could have a bad brain-body coordination, but doing fitness (and especially with lightweight) can help you with that
Just learn the form with baby weight and gradually improve and you'll get better in no time

I can't give any advice on how not to be bothered by it as it hasn't really bothered me. Best you can do is use it to motivate you just as long as you don't try and put too much weight on just to impress others. You just have to accept being the new guy for a few months until others start and you no longer look like the beginner

Yes that's precisely the issue. It hurts your feelings that people will think you're stupid and helpless. You're taking it personally. Reality is most people are the star of their own show and what they do is more about them and their own emotions rather than you. You're just a set piece in their life. So acknowledge that and see that ultimately they don't really care and nor should you.

Acknowledge the thought and move on because 99% of the time they aren't judging you/making fun of you. Look up the spotlight effect, it's a proven tendency our minds have to overestimate how important we are.

Trust me I used to be the same as you, but eventually you learn to move on. No one cares.

Do you have a strategy to cope with anxiety once I step into the gym?

                Anonymous

Exposure therapy is the most tried and tested method. Maybe go there 1 time, sit outside the gym for 20ish minutes and just appreciate how it's a regular place with all sorts of people going in and out (sounds stupid ik). Then day by day, do more, so next time enter the gym and just do some light cardio and gradually build up to what you ultimately intend to do (lift). That's how I did it.

Eventually a week in, you realize how stupid your worries were and no one give a crap. You'll wonder how you ever even thought that way.

One thing you start to understand very quickly when you begin lifting is how weak the average person is. Not in a judgemental way or anything, just a realization. After like a month or two of lifting you'll probably be demonstrably stronger than your peers.

Whatever I think, I need to warm-up, but you are right: one of the reason I'm afraid of going to the gym is because of the warm-up, I'm not sure how to properly warm-up and I don't want to do strange stuff.

When I see a beginner I go up and do the same sets next to him 5x+ the weight and straight up mog until the homosexual never comes back to the gym. I stare directly at him through the mirror and never break eye contact. I dominate. I always make a point to do at least twice the reps the DYEL does. I don’t even go to the gym anymore for gains. When I get off work I wait in the parking lot until some homosexual try’s to better his life and I fricking mog bro.

Thought she was about to come say something to me. My response would have been I have a mom too. She didn't... Most people aren't dicks dude so don't sweat it and keep going.

I think people genuinely have different ideas of the word "beginner". This is particularly the case with the internet showing people how to do exercises and people buying home equipment. One thing that is very true is that noone will care.

Why do experienced lifters come help me then? It happened to me several times. If, as you said, people really don't give a frick and are focused on their training, they shouldn't notice I'm struggling.

They will help everyone, in fact sometimes they try to "help" people bigger than them. Some people are overly helpful to the point where it's more about them upping their social skills and "mogging" than any actual help, I mean it's really at a worrying level. Then you have guys who think it's appropriate to "correct" what just happen to be the sexiest girls with the biggest butts on their form. And yes they're friendly but, a little TOO friendly, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, yes this is a problem. I can't find it now but there was a video of a dude curling a heavy barbell at the gym caught on cctv camera and using a bit of swing. And this other guy walking past is like no no that's all wrong, let me have it and finds the barbell so heavy it just drops down flat. He can't even pick it up!!!

It depends on the situation. The first time I was with a friend of mine who is an experienced lifter, and he was giving me a 8kg barbell. Probably watching the scene, another guy told out loud "give him the 6kg barbell so he learns the exercise"

The second time, I was doing cable row with the same friend, and another guy came to replace my friend and showed me how to execute properly the exercise.

The third time was odd. I was doing again an exercise with a 8kg barbell, but it was too heavy for me so my friend gave me the 6kg one. However, it was still too heavy. Then a black guy (probably in his forties) started a monologue in such a French... I couldn't understand anything, and my friend said to him "we all start from a certain point" and just walked away and urged me to do the same. I still don't know to this day what he was saying, but clearly it didn't seem to be kind words.

Sometimes beginners are doing stuff extremely wrong and big guys are trying to help you so that you don't land in snap city after a month of training
the problem is when this happens:

They will help everyone, in fact sometimes they try to "help" people bigger than them. >overly helpful to the point where it's more about them upping their social skills and "mogging" than any actual help
This happened a lot when I was in my teens and when I was a twigman. I was doing exercises correctly enough, and dudebros were coming up to me and correcting every single little mistakes I did, and when I actually started reading books on proper technique I realized that 75% of what they "taught" me was bullshit.
Nowadays nobody really tells me how to do anything since after 2 years of some heavy training I'm like top 10% of strongest guys in the gym.
Worst part about that is I also "help" some weak ass zoomers just to get that ego boost, sometimes it's too hard to resist, so yeah, the cycle goes on...

A lot of the unsolicited advice you get in the gym is from beginners or lifetime intermediates, blind leading the blind. Sometimes big guys give advice that's good but giving unsolicited advice is bad form unless the person ask for it

Oh god. It’s like I’m reading an old version of myself when I was more naive.

Something a lot of new lifters get wrong: Don't start lifting in the gym, you're not welcome

The first time I went to the gym I didn't go back for 2 years.
    >be me
    >dyel 16 year old (body kind of like pic related)
    >want to be stronger and better looking
    >buy a membership to my local gym online
    >go in wearing a white t shirt and black shorts
    >everyone looks around
    >I'm the skinniest guy there, a lot of cute girls though
    >some guy bursts out laughing, assume it was over something else
    >go to the dumbbells
    >start doing lateral raises
    >notice some guy is sat on a bench with his phone out and it looks like he's recording me
    >a lot of other people are looking at me and talking amongst themselves
    >put down the weights and look around
    >some guy yells out "YEAH PUT THEM AWAY SHRIMP"
    >everyone starts laughing at me
    >some guy comes up to me
    >grabs me by the waist and hoists me on his shoulder
    >starts carrying me towards the door
    >everyone is laughing even the cute girls
    >get put by the door and told not to come back until I've put some muscle on
    >look at the receptionist
    >she gives me a nod towards the door
Didn't know that I was acting like a moron by going to the gym as a dyel.
Spent 2 years lifting dumbbells at home before I went back to a gym, a different one this time because I moved house to a different country.
Always hilarious when a dyel comes into the gym not realising he's not welcome and starts working out. Never seen someone get carried out like I was but we always make them leave. You’re lucky now OP but trust me, this is coming eventually.

Actually in the French equivalent of IST IST, gym people often express their discontent about newcomers at gym, especially when they come in January for the New Year's resolutions or in June when they come in view of the summer beach.

That's because they're French, just ignore then. Even yanks have a taste of the toads up in Canada. That's why Anglo countries are better, we cheer on the newbies instead of criticising then as it we've not a debt from when we were all beginners.

This is pretty tame compared to what my gym did to me when I first started. Basically same situation, got motivated and wanted to get shredded. was getting laughed at a bunch but tried convincing myself it had nothing to do with me. Eventually this huge guy came over, lifted me off the bench and started curling me while yelling “LIGHTWEIGHT BABY” after every rep.
2 girls to left were laughing their asses off and one of them filmed the whole thing. This sounds brutal but it's honestly tame compared to what other newbies go through. I immediately left but returned several months later looking a lot better.
The guy who curled me is one of my buddies now and we do this same routine to any new dyel that shows up.

Just DYELS that literally never make gains month after month year after year, if its still the same people.
