dopamine psychology laziness and fitness

what do you lads think about the idea that laziness is caused by the prefrontal cortex shutting down because of the dopamine/opiate hits we get from indulging in vices such as eating junk food, playing video games and watching porn?

I'm been reading about the brain. The prefrontal cortex is usually talked about as the center for executive function but it also controls self awareness, self control, and being able to prioritize things which are good for you long term over things which feel good short term. but when you choose sugar and porn and weed, those short term feel good chemicals are dulling this part of your brain, so you become a coomer zombie. You're kind of out of control at that point.

Pringles has this thing "once you pop the fun don't stop" or Lay's "I bet you can't eat just one." I think that real and it's because once you taste the salt and the fat, the prefrontal cortex goes into a low battery standby mode, and your animal brain puts you into a loop of eating more and more chips.

I'm pretty sure every vice works this way. As I said, drugs, alcohol, porn, video games, junk food, etc.

So my point is if you are having trouble getting motivated to diet and exercise, maybe you need to look at the rest of your life. Are you constantly distracting yourself with short term fun and feel good things?

Because I believe those things are effecting your brain.

Basically what I'm asking is if any of you are fit but have these vices? Are you actually fit but you watch porn? Are you fit but you are able to eat junk food or drink in moderation? If so, how fit and what vices an how often do you partake?

Didn't read, but you're probably spitting some good points.
I have found that I am way less lazy since giving up instant gratification.
Things people would consider boring (people that play video games, watch every superhero movie, etc) are very engaging and fun to me.
I'm not shy to try new things out, even if they have steep learning curves.
A family member told me video games would fry my brain when I was growing up, and in retrospect: he was right

    >the dopamine/opiate hits we get from indulging in vices such as eating junk food, playing video games and watching porn?
The reward mechanisms in our brain exist to encourage us to do behaviors that were advantageous from an evolutionary prospective:

    - Junk food: Calorically dense and high in fat, sugar, and salt which 10,000 years ago would have been absolute gold mine for survival
    - Video games: Simulate the sort of work and competition that 10,000 years ago would have meant greater power/resources for your tribe
    - Porn: Tricks your brain into thinking you're actual reproducing, which is basically the point of existence
    - Drugs: By far the biggest offender on the list...you're hijacking your brains pleasure centers despite doing NOTHING productive, which is fricking terrible for you.

Diet and exercise basically go against human nature which is why they're so hard for most people. We evolved to survive, which for thousands of years meant only doing the work that was absolutely necessary and eating as many calorically dense foods as you could get your hands on--diet and exercise is minimizing caloric intake and maximizing what is basically unnecessary physical labor.

I have a question for you gys, im going to do a dopamine detox
(Quitting drugs, Porn, Video games, Phone)
But not sure if I can class reading as something I should abstain from.
I read productive books (Psychology and Philosophy)

Also if anyone has recommendations on what I can do to make use of my time whilst doing a detox I would appreciate it as I feel i'll be very bored outside of working out.

cutting all pleasure out of your life is moronic. there’s a categorical difference between the kind of pleasure you quickly obtain from nutting to some prostitute getting sex-trafficked on goonhub vs the pleasure you get after finishing a good book

My dopamine receptors in my brain is avsolutely fried at 33.
I cant focus for shit on things that isnt interesting/fun to me anymore. Vidya isnt entertaining any longer after 20+years of constant competitive/mmo/arpgs used to play atleast 8hours/day for years and years it was my crack cocaine, but its just boring now. I recently bought a sportscar to drive fast/snow drift with and it gives me some sort of fun feeling like vidya used to. Researching useless topics intersting to me is my thing now to stimulate my monkey brain somewhat.
Havent eaten sugar for 9 months but it only helps somewhat its not a cure for my constant brainfog/boredom.

If you like music at all you might try your hand at music production with a DAW. It is basically like a videogame with shit graphics but which actually develops your taste in music and sounds, humbles you greatly but is rewarding as frick. The challenge is to get people in rl to *actually* like your stuff, which is VERY hard to do because people are spoiled by commercial-grade music all their lives. It is a fantastic hobby, especially if you are single. You will automatically get a +1 with young women when they learn you have a glimmer of hope of being famous from producing music that might get on spotify, the radio etc.

The porn/vidya hole definitely made me not motivated enough to make new friends or date women. And using that as an escape for years just reinforced my anxiety. Now I'm 26 and have never held a woman's hand 🙁

At this point I'm barely even motivated enough to play video games. I just watch porn and youtube. Whenever I do manage to go a few days without fapping I feel much better it's basically the only thing my brain likes now.

I think laziness is just the result of not being active for a long time, it's like trained behavior. The less active you are, the less (mental) energy and willpower you have to perform beyond your comfortzone. I've never been a lazy person but I did feel drained at times and overwhelmed by just normal day tasks and chores and even just adding morning cardio to my routine gave me a boost throughout the day to feel ready to take on everything else. So for me it wasn't a distraction or some other stimulus that made me lazy but rather just not doing enough to build up this "energy reserve".

to be 100% honest with you, i wake up everyday at about 6:15 and immediately grab my laptop which is on a chair next to my bed and start watching porn. until probably 6:45. then i get up take a piss, wash my hands and have a coffee and something small to eat so i can shit. i have terrible hemorrhoids that bleed if i wipe my ass, so i use a bidet attachment on my toilet and i shit before the shower. by 7~7:15 im in the shower. i get out get dressed and leave for work by 7:30 or 7:40. Any later and I'll be late for work. So I don't feel like I can add anything to my morning routine unless I can quit porn. It isn't ruining my life, it already ruined my life. If I don't watch porn I am thinking about it all fricking day. Not sex with women of course but every kind depraved fetish bullshit. That's what's stuck in my brain. I'm an addict. And I think that is because the prefrontal cortex thing is a vicious cycle. After you coom, you're in the zombified state so you're more likely to get on pol and waste time or to eat junk food while you're in that state. And then after you eat junk food, you're even more in that state. Round and round your life goes down the drain just like the blood from my hemorrhoids.

sign up for a gym class at 6:00am. You either won't have time to jerk off or you'll have to get up 45 minutes even earlier.
you know you're unhealthy. do something bro!
the main thing you can do to not think about it is not do it. that'll be crazy hard for the first week. pray, read, talk to a friend, go for 4 hour walks, anything to not be in front of your porn screen for a duration.

        >sit in bed browsing till 11
        >half day wasted at that point

        Or during the week
        >spend day at work but think about porn and fapping when getting home
        >get home at around 6:15
        >jerk off and fall asleep
        >wake up and have dinner
        >evening basically wasted

The absolute state of me. My brain is completely fried after years of dopamine indulgence. I never did drugs and only drink socially (meaning very rarely), but shitty food, video games, no exercise, social media/youtube for hours, porn etc. You know how it goes. Intellectually I understand I need to pull myself out of this tailspin, but it's so hard. Monkey brain just wants to laze about all day eating pizza and playing video games.

  11. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

Yes you got it figured out. The "damage" is not permanent at all, it is just one of those things the body does to keep a balance. What happens is that you release too much dopamine, so the brain shuts off some dopamine receptors, having less dopamine receptor means that less dopamine intensive activities won't motivate you enough. If you cut off most of your dopaminergic activites after three weeks you will feel a difference in your dopamine levels because your brain will have regenerated the receptors.

I'm a neuroscientist so I finally have something to contribute here.
    - Anybody who tells you dopamine is a "feel-good" chemical doesn't know how dopamine works.
    - Drugs like alcohol / weed / etc do degrade your brain. So does time. You need to decide how much and how fast you want to age and fall apart.
    - The evidence on porn is not as clear, but probably bad for your relationship with your future wife. Definitely not good for your relationship with God.

        >im an atheist

listen fat, just because satanic pedophiles are running the show doesn't mean god is real. Just because they are evil does not mean they are demons. They are sociopaths but they are human. God is an invention of human beings. It is an abstract concept, a fricking word game. People think just because they can articulate with words that something exists outside of time and space and that it created the universe somehow defines that thing into existence. Well, bucko, it doesn't mean that. Sure its possible but we have no reason to believe it's true. Just because it brings you comfort doesn't mean it's not your imaginary friend. This whole thread is about hedonistic vices that give poeple short term gratification. In many ways God is the ultimate form of that. God is a magic power you wish you had. It's a shortcut you wish existed. It's a dream you double down on out of desperation because it's socially acceptable.

Stop posting on IST about neuropharmacology and go read a textbook on neuropharmacology.
The jist is: some chemicals will physically addict you, which is much more than just psychological addition and in some cases can kill you. Those that are not physically addicting are just psychological "hooks" and all your attempts at explaining why you keep going back to them are just part of the psychological "hook". It's not because your prefrontal cortex is doing summersaults every time you eat an oreo that you keep eating oreos, it's because you're a homosexual with no willpower and you post on IST about prefrontal cortexes while you stuff your face with oreos.
Now if you're trying to kick heroin or alcohol, that's more than just willpower and you should see a doctor to help you kick the physical hooks and guide you to kick the psychological hooks afterward.

not OP but i don't think he's trying to blame anything. he's trying to explain why people reach for vices and why resisting is difficult. that makes it easier to take action. it's people like you who say highschooler shit like "just take action" that have some growing up to do. humans are complicated. it's easy to resist vice and do the right thing when your life is going smoothly. wait until life shits on your (or your family) and then see how easy it is to flip the switch in your brain. the world isn't black and white like that. yeah some people clearly refuse to try but most people are doing the best they can and personal growth is a sliding scale, not a linear graph.
