Exercises for a 55yr old

So I am 30 and my Dad is 55 and he has put on a lot of weight. I myself have too I am 6'2" 250 and my dad is 6'1" 290

He wont work out unless he has someone to do it with and I will do it with him. I am concerned about him in regards to his knees and back. He was a college athlete and had multiple surgeries on his knees. He has no minuscus left in both knees.

I wanted your guys advise on good low impact cardio I can get him to do with me that wont kill him.

Thanks

The elliptical/cross trainer has low impact on knees as a cardio machine, an exercise bike as well as long as its adjusted right

I do have an exercise bike, what about a normal bike?

a normal bike is better overall exercise because of the balance component, especially for hips. If he can still ride and you got a path/course that wont break him, work it in.

if your logistics allow it, I would consider rowing/kayaking/canoeing (on the water, indoor rowing is for when he's hooked on it enough to want to improve his performance). xc skiing may be another option, again depending on logistics.

          3 things OP.

          1. Good on you for helping your dad

          2. For people with bad knees, sled pulls are great. Its therapy for moderns whose bodies arent exposed to pulling things backwards like we should be, and basically impossible to injure yourself with. Ive also been doing elliptical machine in reverse at maximum resistance as a warm up. My knees which were sometimes painful 10 years ago give me zero trouble now.

          3. Good game

Anon if you haven't already then please make sure you unfrick his diet. At his age being 290 is just as bad as being inactive.

          Also, good game.

          yep

Normal bike on a slower pace, then just increase duration/intensity once he adapts. Once he does, swimming.

My mom is fat and moronic and would prefer to go *vegan* than count calories because she totally doesn't feel as hungry eating boxes of noodles every day.

I've shown her how to lose weight by losing weight myself but she refuses.
She is now breathless after climbing the stairs and thinking about buying a stair chair.

    Is there hope?

My father's mentally ill, has spontaneous depressive/suicidal episodes, and refuses to acknowledge it or accept any help offered.

Some people won't understand how good their life is until they destroy it first. You don't have to save her, but you do have to find peace within yourself, knowing you did everything you could. Otherwise you'll ruin yourself feeling betrayed and angry. You're already doing plenty good. But yeah you'll have to make peace watching people ruin themselves before they're willing to turn a new leaf. Ruining yourself as well does not make anything better.

    >He wont work out unless he has someone to do it with and I will do it with him

He's not going to keep it up so don't even bother. Just do some very very basic ass shit with him and see if he can even do that. Come back in two weeks if he's actually adhered to that.

Cycling, rowing, swimming. Also get his diet in check.

My plan as I got older was just to continue with my 5/3/1 and lower the weights accordingly, setting pride aside. That and long walks full of old guy ruminations.

    walk
    hand grippers
cardio machines (bike, row, treadmill, ...)
going outside would be nice but there is a greater concern of falling or getting hit. unless you live in an area with great roads and limited foot/vehicle traffic, it would be best to use machines.

    I'm 49 and /fraud/ing.
I still intent to at 55.
No reason your dad cant lift and do everything a young guy can.
Just be sure to tailor his workouts around his knees or any chronic injuries.

No idea if it's any good, I'm just aware it exists
As for cardio, I'd say rowing, but really that's just because it's the only cardio I can tolerate
