Why would you train calves with hundreds of pounds on? They are not designed to work like that. I usually trained 3 sets of 100 reps, with NO weight or 20 kg or so on my hands or back. My calves grew a lot. And I am otherwise not big.
Maybe you lack patience to do 100 reps
calves are primarily slow twitch fibers, they are designed for endurance, not strength. The human body is overwhelmingly slow twitch dominant, we are actually not built for large feats of strength.
