      the dangers with backflipping are introduced when you over or under rotate since those are the situations where you can impact the floor head-first. once you get comfortable with how much you need to tuck and how forcefully you have to (there are lots of variables here) then backflipping isn't dangerous at all. you'll bang up your legs a bit but there's no real danger.

          if you do the cost-risk analysis then the obvious answer is to go spend a morning/afternoon at a tumbling gym (with friends if you have those) to utilize their foam pit. lots of tutorials that will give you a step-by-step list of drills you can do it breakdown the backflip into segments and practice those till you move to the next. you can learn to do an okay backflip in less than a day with cleaner execution depending on baseline athleticism.
